Well, I didn't watch them--all awards shows seem to me to be excuses for really bad fashion faux pas (is that redundant?)--but I have to comment that Hugh Laurie and/or Ian McShane must have knocked each other out. I like James Spader, but the award should have gone to Laurie or McShane. 'Course, Mr. D'Onofrio has never even been nominated...
I was glad to see Tony Shalhoub win, although he's in the wrong category.

Yes, congrats to Tony Shalhoub, and you're right that his abilities go beyond comedy.
I mentioned this on the Mothership thread, but let's not forget S. Epatha Merkerson!

I watched some of it. Mariska Hargitay looked great. I kind of like that Medium show, so I was glad for Patricia Arquette, but what was she thinking when she got dressed? ? And oh, boo hoo-the housewives didn't exactly sweep the emmys. Guess they will have to get a little more desperate.

I only watched a few minutes, here and there (it's all so boring). But, I did catch the wins by S. Epatha Merkerson, Patricia Arquette and Tony Shaloub. At least, three people I was rooting for won! Hugh Laurie was just plain robbed! At least Lost won for best drama. And the writing for the Three Stories episode of House.

sooo boring.
The funniest part was the dead (uncomprehending?!) silence when Ellen de Generis said "earth, wind and ?)
I guess none of those emmy guest pass it...

I felt the whole evening was just plain WEIRD. The vibe was completely off. There were many a dead silence... Hugh Laurie was indeed robbed. The press is also speculating that his and McShane's votes cancelled each other out, opening the door for Spader. Big props to David Shore for winning the best drama writing emmy for HOUSE M.D. He thanked Laurie for "making me look like a better writer than I am". I hope both get nominated AND WIN next year. Kudos out to S. Epatha Merkerson for her deserved win. (However, I must admit to feeling embarassed watching her - she seemed to have a problem with her dress and was struggling, shall we say, to not have a "Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction" on stage.) I would still love to see D'Onofrio get nominated one day. Unfortunately, both the series writing and his performance in general for Season 4 did not merit one. Perhaps this year, with his new lighter workload and the new energy brought by Noth and Sciorra, Balcer and D'Onofrio can bring us an emmy worthy season 5. D.

I never watch awards shows, but man, there were a lot of dead-silence moments? Whoa...sucks to be Ellen, eh? Big congrats to S. Epatha Merkerson on her award, she deserves it. I was pulling for Mariska Hargitay. I wasn't that impressed with Arquette's performance in the one Medium ep. I've seen. Hargitay ALWAYS looks great. And I was bummed for Laurie when I read the winners in the news the next day. I really hoped he'd get the win. I don't like Spader, so I guess Laurie and McShane canceled each other out. *dangit* Laurie had better get the win next year. I'm always happy Shalhoub won - if for anything else to prove that Ray Ramono is not funny. ( sorry, but I think his co-stars are what make Everbody Loves Raymond the success it is. Ray gets on my last nerve- glad that show is gone from the running now) Tony Shalhoub is hilarious, but his talents don't end with comedy. He's a great dramatic actor as well. And the Housewives -*feh*- I guess they could get more Desperate...*god save us*...but I'm glad they kinda got their bubble busted a little. I'd like to see Criminal Intent or any of its actors/esses get nominated for an Emmy sometime down the road, as well.

I agree I'm not surprised nor sorry LO:ci wasn't in this year. Season four was a mixed bag. S. Epatha Merkerson, however, deserved her award. She's terrific.
I think every award show is really rubbish. I never agree with what the industry thinks of as good or award-worthy. Many times I'm sure they voted just 'cos they HAD to vote for someone. The last several years of the Oscars are like riding a merry-go-round. If you're the 'highest paid' actor or actress or if you or your cast and crew were part of at least one office blockbuster that year then it's your turn. Where the acting merit in that?
this goes for films festivals too which used to have some cred. The Toronto film festival (Thumbsucker was one of the movies) was just a week long cocktail party very few people outside the industry could get tickets to. Ironically (or maybe not) award shows are the most boring shows around.
Award shows suck.

Gwyneth Paltrow's mother making it political?! To borrow MelTex's pity WTF?!!! She doesn't have any boys in Iraq!
I flipped the channel at that moment.

I'll turn my rant on then ..... who was it; early on as I only watched about 30 minutes of it; who did their speech & as the music was tinkling them off said "bring our boys back" well, it is just not the place for that - because it could mean that she had no supporting feelings for the war (probably) or it could have been isolationist, or it could have been anti military completely, or it could have been a stunt for good pr - whatever good pr is. Anyway - no place for it - that gave me my final eyeroll.
