I really like this ep. Bobby was looking especially good, though I thought the scene where the gun was pointed straight at his head without him flinching was maybe pushing it, though I liked it at the same time.
Thoughts?

Phantom has always been one of my favorites. The last scene really focuses on Goren's ability to understand a person and to know how to negotiate with that person. As I watched this ep again, I realized that is a second episode where a mirror in the entry is used to reflect the entrance of Goren, Eames, and other police to serve a search warrant in a home - this time, Tessa and Jerry Rankin's home. The other that I noticed is the same scenerio to enter and search Carlson's home as they try to locate Dennis Griscom in The Third Horseman. Another mirror scene occurs in Shibboleth when Goren speaks to the son of the mad killer, and the son is reflected in the interrogation room mirror. In that scene, I feel that Goren is almost getting into the head and mind of the son as G. reassures the son that he is not automatically programed to be the same type of person his father is. js

Hmmm...... that is intriguing.
On a lighter note, I also liked "Cookie Castrano", especially the way she reverted back to her Brooklyn self when they caught her. It seems like that is not the first supporting character they've made from Bensonhurst.....a tribute to Vincent? I'd be curious if others have noticed it too.

This is one of my favorites as well. The confrontation at the end is splendid writing and acting. Every word and gesture is just perfect.

I've just watched this episode on DVD which I got from Netflix and came here to see what you guys had to say about it, and it now seriously wondering that why nobody has mentioned just how bloody HOT Goren is with that big gun in his hands?? And was I the only one who painfully withheld the urge to sream when he took his jacket off?
Okay, seriously. The ending is a mindnumbing one. Well, for me, at least. Because I was actually pitying that guy up until the last minute, despite that he had killed before and was trying to kill his own children, I saw him as a guy who's under the "unbearable" pressure as Goren put it, from the expierence and background I have, I could understand that. But when Goren found out about the number of the bullets in the gun-- only two of them-- I was suddenly consumed by disgust.
Goren didn't find out about it until the last minute, so was he truthful when he told the guy that none of all those things happend was his fault? I don't know, and will never do.

Hi Mushroom Goren didn't find out about it until the last minute, so was he truthful when he told the guy that none of all those things happend was his fault? I don't know, and will never do. I think he was just saying that, cause he had the gun pointed at his kids. but as for the gun, how many bullets can you put into a rifle? I thought just 2, cause it looked like a 2 barrel gun. but apparently not. Didnt you love the look on his face, when he was looking at the collage, and it dawned on him what Jerry might be planning on doing. Great episode from beginning to end.

Sure, a good episode. But I did not like the rifle thing. When I saw it I just remembered my father saying: "Never threaten somebody with a long weapon." And he demonstrated how easy it is to get a rifle out of somebody's hand. "That's what the revolver is for". As for the bullet thing… a two barrel gun is supposed to be a shotgun, and a shotgun fires a cartridge (or two) full of small bullets which are only life-threatening if fired from a very short distance (you can saw off the gun to enhance this effect). And it gets very messy, to put it mild.

I think it depends on what kind of gun it was. Some of those "long weapons" can carry a lot of rounds. I'm not into guns, so I couldn't tell you how many rounds that particular weapon could hold, but I took Goren's word that it could have held more than two and that Jerry did intend to walk away.

If this is the episode I think it is, it was a shotgun they had and those do only carry 2 shots, unless they had an extra round attachment, which I did not see, so 2 rounds would have been the limit.

You *can* kill somebody with a shotgun, sawed-off or not, the point is only that is impractical to use a long weapon to threaten somebody...but I must admit, the guy holding it looked very fierce...

I love the guy who played Rankin in 'Phantom' (I'm sorry but his real name escapes me), he is a pretty good actor, after that episode, he went on to play a small part in the 2004 thriller 'SAW'. Yeah I have to say that the blue shirt/no jacket thing gets me every time, I was a little scared for Goren the first time I saw this episode, but I love how he bravely puts himself btw the gun & the kids; not many of us could do that. I also love how big & imposing he looks when he pushes Rankin into the wall while yelling 'Clear!'

I know nothing about guns, but I do know that Goren did look especially hot in the blue shirt and pants. Love it when he takes off his jacket. And he definitely looked much bigger and more imposing than Gerry when he pushes him into the wall.
