Anyone catch the premiere of "Numb3rs" on CBS?
I was working on a project, so I only caught the last 20 minutes, but what I saw I enjoyed. The combination of young mathematical genius plus straight-laced FBI agent who are brothers seems like an interesting partnership. And I always enjoy watching Judd Hirsch, who plays the father.
One of the features of this episode was the use of mathematical formulae to locate suspects within residential and business maps based upon the crime victims. It definitely reminded me of Goren and Wally in "Probability". I very much appreciated that the genius brother had trouble - both with inconsistent data, and with challenging himself to adjust his calculations based on human behavior. He was bright, and caring, and human himself, thus endearing me to him.
I'm definitely giving this new show a chance.

:)I caught the first episode of NUMB3RS as was impressed. I was a little iffy about seeing Fleishman from Northern Exposure doing something darker, but he did a really good job as a intuative FBI agent. I liked the brother Charlie as well. He's another one of these exceptionally gifted, yet socially inept guys, who hase many endering qualities along with his oddities. I like how they showed him so flustered when his formula didn't come out right because of the Human equation! Great drama! I love Judd Hursch, glad to see him back in something again. I'm gonna add this show to my watch list for sure. I hope they continue with good cases and good writing, making the mathmatical aspect of the show as easy for the audience to understand as they can--without taking away from the plots. Kinda like CSI, the scientific or mathmatical mumbo-jumbo has to have an interpretor for the audience. But I think they did a very good job. I'm Hooked!

It had looked good from the promos and I had meant to catch the premiere, but I got side tracked. It's a good thing Mystery is going to show the pilot episode this coming Sunday. The new episode is on Friday night. I'll have to tape that and watch it after I've seen the pilot on Sunday.

I watched parts of the first ep while somewhat busy doing something else. I liked the characters, but what the math wiz was doing kept distracting me. He was inventing geographic profiling. Um... excuse me... but that’s already been done...
I can’t remember which episode it was (Nikki, a little help here?) but Goren even presented a bit about geographic profiling at COMSTAT (though I strongly suspect that if anyone in Major Case has taken the training to actually produce a geographic profile it would be Eames, not Goren).
It was pretty surprising to me that they would claim such a major advance in profiling – I was thinking it would reduce believability for most people. But my sister pointed out that most people probably don’t know that geographic profiling exists. I’m a Court TV junkie (the nighttime shows like Forensic Files, not the daytime courtroom stuff), and I also followed our local (DC area) sniper investigation closely, so geographic profiling is something I’m pretty familiar with. Did anyone else recognize the technique he was ‘inventing,’ and, if so, did you find that distracting, or just figure it was another form of ‘ripped from the headlines?’<br>

I caught the premiere. I thought it was interesting, but it lacked something. I can't put my finger on what, but I had little desire to watch it again.

I've liked NUMB3RS so far. But if they don't find something for Don ( the older brother) to do, more than just relying on math-wiz Charlie to always save the day -- they're gonna negate the pupose of the FBI bro's character. Then it'll just be, "All about Charlie--math genius and social introvert" *grin*

Hot guys everywhere! ;D I also enjoy the fact that everything is explained so well that someone like me (not a math genius) can understand what is going on. I think I'll have to spring for the DVD when it comes out.

I saw one episode last week, a kidnapping. I was impressed, especially with the math-geek brother, but it looked like the FBI brother and Judd Hirsch as the father have great potential. Wouldn't mind seeing more, although truth be told my response was "It's Mathnet for grown-ups!"
"Mathnet" was a recurring segment on a PBS after-school show called "Square One", which was designed to help kids learn various math concepts. Celebrities, parodies of game shows, etc. But "Mathnet" was the last ten minutes of every episode, a serial kiddy mystery complete with narration and Dragnet theme music, using math to solve crimes and dillemas. "The story you are about to see is probably true. The names are made up but the problems are real." "My name is Monday. I'm a mathematician." Dum dee dum dum! Kate Monday and George Frankly were the characters. From what I remember, it was very clever and well done. My father the civil engineer loved it. And I'm showing my youth, aren't I? Sorry for the digression, but that's what I thought of.

The thing that sets this show apart from other crime dramas is the focus on the members of the family and how the father and the sons and their co-workers solve crimes.
This show deals with home life without becoming a soap opera. I watched several on tape over the weekend and it becomes more compelling once you get into the characters.
It is not as entertaining as L&O:CI but the characters have more chemistry than what I have seen of the characters on CSI:NY.

I am putting this article on the Numbers thread since this seems to be a popular show with CI viewers. Numbers episodes soon will be available at the CBS website.
"CBS to Start Streaming Prime-Time Shows Tuesday August 15 5:12 PM ET
CBS Television will begin showing episodes of several new and returning prime-time shows for free on the Internet, becoming the second network to do so.
CBS already sells downloads of episodes on Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes Music Store and Google Inc.'s video store. In May, it launched an advertising-supported online channel called "innertube" to stream programming created just for the Web.
The network said Tuesday that starting next month it will begin streaming episodes of a new show, "Jericho," as well as returning shows "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "NCIS," "Numbers" and "Survivor." The shows will contain fewer ads than when they are shown on TV. The ads also will be shorter typically 15 second to 30 seconds and cannot be skipped, CBS said.
The shows will become available the day after they appear on TV. Episodes of "Jericho" and "Survivor" will remain available online for the entire season, while episodes of the other shows will be online for four weeks following their initial airing.
"Making our new and returning prime-time series available to our viewers is the next step in innertube's programming evolution," Larry Kramer, president of CBS Digital Media, said in a statement.
ABC began showing episodes of four prime-time shows, including "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" for free online in May. The network was the first to sell episodes on iTunes last October.
ABC recently hailed the success of its later effort, saying that in May and June, the network's site showed 16 million video streams. The network is expected to expand its online offerings in the fall.
NBC does not yet offer prime-time ad-supported episodes online. The network has started a new Web site to stream the pilot episodes of two new shows, "Friday Night Lights" and "30 Rock."
The network also is offering DVDs of two other new shows "Studio 60" and "Kidnapped" through a partnership with Netflix Inc.
The Fox network has not yet begun showing episodes online, although it does sell episodes on iTunes. "
