from an interview with John Tarrant ( a Zen guy)
If I were shopping for lipstick, what would I be looking for if I were looking for Zen?
Are you free? Is it funny? Can you see through the forms of things? Can you really enjoy the lipstick? Is it generous?
What is free?
Well, "I need this lipstick or I will be unhappy," would not be free. "Oh, what a cool lipstick" would be free.

Very interesting answers. As I sit here listening to my Zen Garden CD and try to work: Not so modern Zen: Our natural mind Like the Autumn moon Reflected on a clear jade lake. Nothing like it; How to explain it? - Han Shan (627–649)
Human nature is developed By profound serenity and lightness; Virtue is developed By harmonious joy And open selflessness. When externals do not Confuse you inwardly, Your nature finds the condition That suits it; When your nature does not Disturb harmony, Virtue rests in its place. - Huai-nan-tzu

Nikki,
I have to ask, what instruments are on your Zen Garden CD? I had a "Zen CD" (actually a record) that was a flute and harp which was very calming. I guess I need to see if I can find it again.
Thanks for the poetry.

Actually this particular CD is called zen escape. It's from a company called "Solitudes". The music is composed and arranged by Daniel May. The instruments are: shakuhachi (bamboo flutes), koto, shamisen, erhu, pipa, guzhen, piano and cello. Lots of flutes and strings! It also features nature sounds. An additional feature on the CD is beautiful Screen Savers. It's all so very calming. I'm glad you like the poety. Here's a link to the site called dailyzen if you'd like more: www.dailyzen.com/

Thanks for the link. A friend of mine recently gave me a CD that had thunderstorms along with a harp and flute that were interwoven together in a very relaxing way. It really seems to almost engender meditation.
I do not know how deep into Zen you are but I was wondering if you encounter the same problems I do with trying to explain the concept to other people. I was talking with someone recently and they said that the Zen question of "If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?" They asked me for the answer to the question and said it made no sense to them. I said "Exactly."
