So...Mr. Bush is in Canada, eh! The bowtied guy on CNN's Wolf Britzer show thinks all Canadians go around on sleds! Yes, and he gave a shout-out to a few people, none of whom I know. ;D he said: "I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave - with all five fingers - for the hospitality." Actually, he did do something that impressed me recently when he was in Chile and the Chilean security separated him from his own Chief of Security. He reached into the phalanx of security guards and physically yanked his guy back over to him saying. "He's with me." I thought it was very presidential.

..I thought it was very presidential. Yes, it was. Interesting thing this morning. I usually have the local Global station on every morning for news, traffic... This morning it was the National edition with all Bush in Halifax. First it was 10 minute speech from Mr. Martin, to be followed by 30 minutes of Mr. Bush. I switched to the US channels on my way to see SG1 and NADA. CNN didn't bother to tune in until the end of Martin's speech.

Yes, a perfect icon for this thread, thanks Nikki
I am almost lured into a political discussion ... almost, I am itching to bring up the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the despotic, greedy and nutso fools that took power under the Empire. Almost to go into the shame of seeing my fellow countrymen rioting about legal matters, rioting about SUCCESSFUL sporting events...... e-gads, the inhumanity!

Actually, no. There was humor in it, but it was a series about spies, and occasionally got not only serious but downright grim. There was, I shudder to say, a movie made sometime in the past couple of years that used the title, and a few other elements from the series. It was not otherwise related to the classic show. It may well have been a comedy. I don’t know. I certainly didn’t watch it. Objectively, at this point, I have to say that the series is a bit dated. And there were a few episodes that were pretty bad. But it remains the quintessential partner show. It was filmed on location all over the world, and like their characters, Bill Cosby and Robert Culp “lived in each other’s back pockets” – sharing hotel rooms and spending most of their time together. They cheerfully allowed the lines between themselves and their characters to blur, so to some extent the people they were, and the quality of their friendship, became part of the characters. Cosby’s comedic style was integrated as a way the characters used humor to deal with difficult situations. They developed it into a signature banter, and the wonderfulness of it is still recognized by I Spy fans today. Right, Nikki? Their friendship, despite a couple of rough spots, has lasted over 30 years. Fans of the show tend to be loyal, too.

Thanks, Observer. I'll have to go rent a season or two of it - I haven't see I Spysince it was on the air. It's amazing how differently shows/movies/fashions look over the lapse of time.
And yay for December! I love winter, or as much of it as I can get in the San Francisco Bay Area. It has been pretty frosty the last few days. The newsmen are all over the newstations demanding "When will it end?!" It's like, maybe 34 degrees at the coldest. For two days. Oooooh, the horror! How will we survive?

One channel in our area shows it Sunday to Friday, in the the afternoon. I've caught a few episodes if I'm home when it's on Sundays or if I have day off due to a Statutory holiday.

I need to see some cool TV shows. Have nto seen "I Spy", but I am a fan of Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee in "The Avengers". Unfortuantely I haven't been in touch with most ANYTHING lately due to these bloody razzerfrazzin end of semester crams. I have two major papers and a Latin final, and no time to work on them this weekend because of a choral concert. Plus, all the ordinary daily mess has kept me from working this week. So, that explains the (welcome, I'm sure!) silence on my end. I'm taking a few minutes to reply to threads, and that's about it. ANd Nikki, cool graphic! THanks for that bit of cheer. Later all, take care.

Catbird, Your silence is *not* welcome, but certainly understood, with all you have going on. The Avengers were definitely cool, though slightly camp – you weren’t meant to take them too seriously. I Spy couldn’t match them for style – you just can’t beat Emma Peel and John Steed for style – but I Spy set the standard for cool in U.S. television. I Spy can still be seen in syndication in various cities, but that’s usually not a good way to see it. What most stations show is a syndication package that has a lot of scenes cut or trimmed to make extra time for more commercials. When a series is cut for syndication, the first thing they cut is anything focused on the characters that isn’t essential to the plot. So in syndication I Spy has much less of the great character interaction that fans loved so much. The only time I’ve found the un-cut episodes being shown in the past 30 years was on a television station associated with Howard University, an historically black university in Washington DC. However, the series is available on DVD, so if you have a DVD player, you’re in luck! Nikki, what do they show up in Canada? Cut, or un-cut? If you're not sure, I remember a specific scene they cut from one of the episodes, so you might be able to tell that way -- though if you remember the original series well, you can probably tell easily enough.

That's one reason I like the Avengers, they didn't take themselves too seriously. We have a few VHS tapes that A&E put out, (my father was mad they didn't have the leather suit), although I'd definitely like to get more. I wanna be Emma Peel when I grow up! Have you seen "The Winged Avenger", with murders that are echoed in a comic book? And that fight scene at the end, with music and props straight out of another classic '60s series? Eeeh-yerp!
I'm feeling a bit more at ease now. Concert went well Sunday, dinner with the parents (just finished leftovers, gotta love fettucine alfredo). Besides, I talked with an advisor today to drop religious studies to a minor instead of a double major--that frees up some class time so I'm not going insane, but I can pick and choose what will best supplement my history courses. I have one big paper due tomorrow at 5:00, so I'll be bustin my chops tonight and tomorrow, but after that I should be almost OK.
Course all the holiday stuff helps. We showed "Muppet CHristmas Carol" in the parlor Saturday night, and in just a few minutes we're going to have Christmas stories and a big holiday get-together where all us Secret Santas are revealed. Yay! Sorry, the end is in sight so I'm getting a bit giddy.
