Cassie, I refuse to restrict my use of my rights today out of fear of future retribution should I lose these rights in the future. I also still have some hope in the American people and their will not to be oppressed and/or controlled by an agency that their tax dollars are funding.
The generation who burned their draft cards may be older and more measured in their responses, but they're not dead.

no no don't go to the evil Walmart to watch the anti-christ! If the faithful are going to worship, then the best place to congregate is at one of the main shrines. And at least once a week, if I understand the liturgy correctly. ;D

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that in the midst of this administration's obession with terrorism that they are just now deciding to crack down on illegal immigrants?

I wish I could reply coherently and passionately, with lots of facts and stats to back me up. But I can't, I just get this feeling of dread. I remember when the Patriot Act first came out how queasy and upset I felt. It still scares the shit out of me--apologies for the language, but that's the only way I can describe it. The stubborn streak in me wanted to run to the library and check out every possible biography, manifesto, controversial text, etc. just to thumb my nose at the system: "What, you're gonna mess me over for just trying to be well-rounded and informed?" I still have to fight that urge sometimes.

Hee! In other words: "Rebel, daughter of aging wanna-be-hippies, rebel! Make your mama proud!" I'm getting better about keeping myself informed. I don't get much time for extra reading during the school year, but in the summer I'm at the library practically every week. New rule I've decided on: I normally get 3-4 books each trip. For this summer, each trip must include at least one non-fiction, which will roughly come out 1 informative to every 2 novels/fun books. For those interested, the Daily Show website now has a section on the authors who've appeared on different episodes. They just started it so it doesn't go far back, but a good name/title check, a couple links. "What's the name of the guy with the book about the thing?"... www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_daily_show/authors/index.jhtml"You are reading this because a) you can read, and b) you like to read. And because you saw a guest on the Daily Show talking about a book, and you said, "I can read, I like to read, and I might like to read that book." That's why we've gathered information about the book-related guests on the Daily Show, and packaged it up all nice and pretty for you. You're welcome." Dig in! --Catbird

Another suggestion: we start a thread with companies whose ethics and political donations we like. Buyblue.org would be a start for ideas.

Holy cow, I hadn't heard about that. In Charlotte, North Carolina?!?! Home of the Ree-pub bankers and country clubs?!?! How did Harry Taylor get past the screens? I believe this is what TWOP would classify as a "Hell Yeah!" moment.
That's the first online/political petition I've signed, and I overcame my paranoia to sign by name. It pays to wait, I guess.
