Wow, May is a busy baby month. Happy Belated Birthday to Trisha (sorry I missed you), Happy Birthday to Nikki, and big special days for anybody else!
And now back to the boxes for moving out. Department ceremony tonight, get up at the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow to sing at graduation tomorrow, and then home for good!
Later all, take care.

Happy Birthday to all the May babies!
I've been decompressing since a big party weekend up in Seattle with girlfriends, phew. Now I'm just assembling the new spinning wheel I bought, spending hours lovingly oiling her and getting to know her....I think she needs a name, but I don't think it'll come to me until I've actually made some yarn on her.

Wow - could you make yarn out of my dog's fur? I always wanted a sweater done in his fur.

Depends on what sort of dog you have (some fur just doesn't make for good spinning), but yep, there's a sub-section of spinners who do primarily dog fur. I have a bag of fur I've been saving from my Aussie, Maisy, so I can make a keepsake (you know, someday when I actually have time to spin for myself and not for business).
I don't know about a whole sweater of solid fur from one dog (it would take forever to gather enough), but you could totally make a nice blend with another soft fiber and make a nice scarf.

Maybe it's the influence of the Gary Wright number on my CD player, but somehow the words Dream Weaver are on my mind.
BTW, Happy Birthday (belated and on time) to all here who have special days in May!

SarahIvy I'm impressed! Don't tell me you do agility with your Aussie too, I have an Aussie mix, he's enough to drive you up a wall, and he's considered mellow, too smart for his britches if you ask me. madger

Thanks madger! No, I don't do agility with Maisy...do you with your boy? I absolutely love Aussies and basically all the herding dogs and herding mixes. There is something so fun and challenging (and sometimes infuriating) about living with a dog that you have to spell around so they don't know what you're talking about Heh, Techguy, Dream Weaver might be a perfect name for my floor loom!

SarahIvey: I used to do agility with him, and Competition Obedience, but he's 12 now and always had a mind of his own any way. You're lucky, Duncan can spell, he's also been watching me carefully when I drive, I'm afraid one of these days he's going to take the car for a joyride. Sorry to the rest of you, dog owners can be worse than parents when it comes to bragging. madger

ha ha ha that's great! My dog is not THAT smart .... but he did learn to spell MILK but then I had been spelling it so long - he promptly forgot what it was when said in conversation. ha ha ha now let's see if I start saying it again and not spelling it out - if he forgets the one word he learned how to spell. He can shed enough to fill a pillow case in a two week period when he is doing his yearly shed - I guess that is not enough for a sweater .... but I don't want a scarf - I have 3 & wear them maybe 4 days a year

Madger, yeah, there are a few words we can't even spell anymore, like "car" or "kibbles" or "cows"....she just goes nuts. Crazy smart dogs! We try using hand signs but she figures those out too Metella, it sounds like your pup does produce quite a lot of fiber, I bet you *could* save up enough for a sweater! I would totally offer to do it, but I am honestly swamped with more work than I can deal with lately (which is great, but overwhelming!). Here are a couple of links to folks who do custom spinning and work with dog fiber, they have some good info on their sites- www.joyofhandspinning.com/custom-spinning-info.htmwww.bbkirk.com/Dog%20Hair%20Yarn.htm

My cat can open the door to the patio and gets out. No idea how she does it. I'll have to buy a video recorder to catch her!
