Enjoyed the little MIB reunion, but the grandfather was a major jack@@@. holy crap! how did i NOT realize the "MIB" commonality?!?! where the heck has my brain gone?? (i even saw the "thumbsucker reunion", and i haven't even SEEN "thumbsucker"!!!) we've seen episodes w/ people that VDO has worked with before...wouldn't it be interesting to have some episodes with bill murray or kevin bacon? or other people that KE has worked with? not sure how they'd write a story around them...but these writers could do it...couldn't they? about ross...i'm can't really decide what i think he thinks of goren. i think that at the very least...maybe he doesn't like goren, but he recognizes that he gets the job done. like, he can treat someone w/ the respect due the job, and do HIS job by looking out for HIS detectives...but it doesn't mean he has to like him....and that still may show in how he treats goren.

Well I just saw this episode and I've got to say that I love it. It was like watching an episode from a previous season. What I found interesting was that Goren and Eames seemed 'brighter' than the previous 2 episodes and it's fantastic that Eames has dealt with her issues the way she has and is back to the Snark form we all know and love. Ross is hilarious. I love him already. He's brilliant, I actually liked the fact he showed up at the crime scene, it showed how much he wants to be involved in the cases and I loved the way G&E were surprised by him coming that Eames seemed shocked in the way she said Captain! I took him being there as concerned by the turn the case had took. I never would've imagined Deakins turning up at a crime scene but with Ross it just seems natural. I also noticed the recurring actress, don't know her name but she was in Zoonotic, Magnificat and now Bedfellows. Interesting pattern for those that are interested - the episodes she appears in are all episodes from seasons that are 'even numbers' by that I mean 2, 4 and 6 as opposed to odd numbers. Zoonotic - 2 Magnificat - 4 Bedfellows - 6 If there is a Season 8, I wonder if she'll be in it. Sorry, but I guess I notice bizarre things like that. The boy at the end, Jeffrey, I just wanted to give him a hug. I feel so sorry for him that he is probably going to be raised by his Grandfather, who doesn't have a great track record with his two sons. Notice how his favourite Grandchild is the son of his own favourite child. Wendy Hugs

janethyland, I'm curious to know how you've been able to see this season's episodes so much earlier than they're aired in Ireland. Are you able to download them? Will we see one of your great analyses of Bedfellows?

Just a little tidbit, I just discovered that Carrie Preston's (Lena) husband in real life is Michael Emerson (Jerry Rankin) from the "Phantom" episode .. They both star in the movie "Straight -Jacket" from 2004, about a movie executive living in the 1950's who marry's to hide his homosexuality. it's a comedy

LOCIfan,I get them the old fashioned way,by post! Im about two weeks behind you because of that and because I think contemplatively which means I hold thoughts in my head for a long time before they come out! Does that make sense? You could by them the day or so after they air from iTunes. www.iTunes.com

I like Ross. While we didn't get too much time with the book club, it seems like he may be able to hold his own with Goren in unexpected ways beyond "I'm your commaning officer and I said so". ...I think it's clear that Ross has a very good brain and it's going to be interesting to see how Goren reacts to that. I very much agree. Ross is being written/portrayed as someone who is widely read, highly intelligent, has a good memory, is very alert, and is quick-thinking. For instance, he not only reads history, he also read and remembered an article from the Style section of the paper from weeks or months before. Unless he’s such a big fan of that particular model that he scans for articles about her, that would suggest that he reads most of the paper every day. He is also alert enough that he noticed, before either Goren or Eames did, the odd behavior of the police car that cruised slowly by them in Siren Call. I doubt that Ross is *as* widely read as Goren, and I would be surprised if he is written as having the same level and complexity of either knowledge or intelligence... but at a guess, from what we’ve seen so far, I’d ballpark his IQ in the top 2% -- eligible for Mensa. So I agree that he’ll be able to hold his own with Goren in ways that most people can’t. And I agree with Patcat that, “...it's going to be interesting to see how Goren reacts to that.” As someone said, Goren did seem interested/pleased about the possibility that Ross might be interested in discussing the books, though he may have been a little uncertain about Ross’s reaction to his preferring a different title. I haven’t gotten to know Ross well enough to be sure of the meaning of his reaction, but my initial impression is that he may have been surprised that Goren had actually read such high-level history books. Perhaps he knew that Goren tended to “over think,” but didn’t necessarily know that Goren is interested in – and has read extensively in – subjects outside of criminology and psychology. I enjoyed the book club moment, but I wasn’t sure the first time I saw it if Ross was joking about having read it. I wondered if his look to Goren was “You actually read this?” or “You liked which one?”. Upon rewinding I think I was being elitist and he did read it. Is that what everyone else inferred? I wouldn’t have been sure, either, from his tone when he said, “I think this is my favorite.” But his tone of voice when he first recognized one of the titles had already convinced me that he had read and enjoyed the book. Also all these outdoor shots this season seem to emphasise Goren's size. He's a giant of a man. All of human nature seems to cross that face. How does he do it? Techguy, theres your Everyman! “...All of human nature seems to cross that face...” Well said. Few people, and very few actors, can dare to fully open to the depth and breadth of their own emotional experiences, much less those of humanity as a whole. D’Onofrio is exceptional not only in his skill, but in his ability to open to the full experience of whatever he portrays.

LOL! Too funny, janethyland! ;D
I really enjoyed this episode. It was rather bittersweet, but it also kept me guessing, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Goren and Eames were in fine form - as someone pointed out, they dealt with painful family issues in this episode that hit close to home for both of them, but avoided getting 'over-angsty'. I can't believe I just said that. *shakes head*
Anyway....
I have to admit, I was still in awe after watching Maltese Cross (2 brand new eps at once, what more could a girl want?), but I found Bedfellows a pleasure to watch.
And again, I enjoyed the way Ross is connecting to his detectives. The scene when Ross picked up the book and remarked that it was his favourite was classic. I think that Goren felt comfortable enough to point out that he liked the other book better (this was a personal thing, not really a professional PoV he was expressing, after all) was a good indicator that they are acclimatising to their new captain.
Also, the grin that lit up Goren's face was beautiful. It was like he suddenly realised that he might actually have something in common with the new guy - even if it was just a preferred author. And of course, Eames - what was it she said? 'I hate to interrupt the book club...'
Classic stuff. Fun, and intriguing.

Yes,I have to admit that exchange over the book titles between Goren and Ross is one of my favourites, and the smile...or rather glint! Its the world weariness of Ross, the man caught in the machine of the NYPD, that contrasts so well with Goren, the man the machine cant catch! Yes, Ross does come across as being very cynical. Not exactly jaded, but definitely cynical. But I love that, janethyland! The man the machine can't catch, indeed!!! ;D To me, it seriously looked like Goren's face just lit up over the book connection. It was the kind of genuine smile we see so rarely from him. The kind of smile he shows when something not case-related really pleases him.

It seems to me that Goren, for all of his ability to study human nature and draw conclusions about it, often has trouble connecting with others, especially other men. It appeared to take him a long time to connect with Deakins. I think Goren recognizes this in himself, and is grateful when he can make the connection. So, I think he was thrilled to discover a link between himself and Ross.

yes indeedy, that little "book club" scene was over far too soon -- if the episodes weren't so time crunched it would have been great to see them start debating the relative merits of the books before being interupted by Eames' snark! Lovely glimmers of connection between Goren and Ross. I don't think Goren finds too many people willing to engage him intellectually ... and certainly not most cops. He always tries to downplay his intellectual knowledge on the job for the most part, and it might be nice for him to know he doesn't have to with Ross.
Plus, WE know that Ross is a NYC history buff... but does Goren? It's sort of come up in the Logan/Wheeler episodes, but I suspect that Ross has a large share of trivia at his command that might even make Goren amazed! ;0)
Fun Stuff!

Hopefully, we'll see more glimpses of this in future episodes. It certainly makes for enjoyable viewing!
