What do you all think about this latest chapter in the Goren family drama?

I think TPTB look at the success of SVU with it's glut of personal stuff and think if they do the same thing with CI than that will ensure the show's success. It has been slowly moving away from the original format for awhile now. I also think it gives the two stars a chance to show their stuff. More emotional gut wrenching with the present story lines this last couple of seasons. I'm not crazy about it.

Oh, heavens, I'm all over the place on this one. An A for the acting, but there were so many problems with the story. I'm not even going to try to grade this.

An A+ for acting, but the writing is all over the place, that's a B. So an overall A . Is it me, or is this ramming Goren's mental illness down our throats a bit too much? I know it makes for good fodder for the storylines, but I'm not buying the sudden "he's crazy" idea.

Me too, which is why I gave it a D. I'm sick of the f-ing pity party. Please, someone make it stop.

Yea, I gave it an A.
VDO can take nothing and make something with it. Too much in one hour, and I will say again.... it should have been a 2hr. special.
I think that Goren is not crazy. This is him using his psychological understanding of human behavior and using it to his advantage.
That's my personal theory.... for the moment.

I think they could have explored this story so much more. There definately was so much missing that they needed to tell us. It easlily could have been a two hour episode instead of an hour and five minutes ( if it was even that?!?).
But the acting was excellent. I think Vincent deserves an emmy nomination for this episode. Kathryn too. For that reason I bumped the grade up to an A.

Well, as someone who enjoys the whole character development trend, even I was very disappointed in the crime story, especially the lack of closure with the warden & the evil guards.
When Goren was surrounded by the guards the second time they had him in "heaven," & he said he was a cop & started giving them his badge number, I was ecstatic! NOW the bad guys will suffer and justice will prevail! I wanted the end scene from "Stress Position" with the guards & warden getting arrested. What did we get? Our hero getting the shaft. That's not CI to me.

I think that Goren was deliberately testing himself.
While the catalyst was feelings for his nephew, the psych unit scenario was secondary to this impulse to self-test.
I don't know how much Eames understands this, but we find out in this episode that she trusts him implicitly and will defend him to Ross: "Goren saw it differently." (on a side note, I thought it was pretty funny how he called her "sis ...") **
I really think that this episode is full of painstaking details that, once perceived, will help me to appreciate it better ... gosh, I really am a junkie! *s*

Effie and others, I never would have concentrated on that aspect. Now I'll have to watch the episode again This is why forums exist.

Deathroe---
You bring up a good point. Perhaps Goren was not just rescuing Donny and stopping prison abuse but he did it in a way that was a personal test of his mental stability. Maybe he figured if he could withstand the torture he really was mentally sound.

Or perhaps Goren is plagued with enough self doubt and guilt that he thinks he deserves such torture?

Interesting theories. I stick to the concept that was stated beautifully by Eames when driving in the car with Ross. Ross asked Eames if Goren was deliberately testing his own mental health... Trying to "get as close to the edge as he could." Eames silently shook her head no, and softly replied, "All he was thinking was that he had to save Donny." So for me, there was no conscious or subconscious mental health test going on. Bobby did what he had to do to save his nephew. If anything, I think he was more terrified than most to enter "heaven" because of what he knows his mother used to go through under restraints.

I never saw Goren as crazy, but they've been hinting at it for years, so it's not such a surprise.
