::)My apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but I thought this would be the place to ask:
How does one go from Rookie (which I clearly am) to the next rank? And what are the ranks?

The member ranks are by post count and can be found here. Colored user names may become a part of the deal later, too. I know it sucks to be a rookie, but please curb the urge to spam the forum with double and triple posts.

Being a rookie shouldn't suck: quality over quantity in posts always works for me

Well, whatever is causing my problem posting on this board, it's come up with a creative new twist. I was able to sign in and open the Ill-Bred thread. I pasted my post into the reply box, but only the first section of it posted -- it's much longer than what you see on the thread. Now I can't get to the post to edit it, or post a complete separate post. I log in, but every time I open that section of the board, I revert to non-signed in status, so I can't post or edit my previous post. Yet when I open this section of the board I stay signed in and can post.
In this kind of situation, could I put my post in this thread and ask one of the moderators to move it to the appropriate thread? I don't know if that would mean I couldn't edit it later; but it might be worth it, just to be able to post, if that's something the moderators think might be a workable solution.

Whatever works for you, works for me. I'll post for you anytime you wish. You can post here, or email me your posts (the address you usually use will be fastest) and I'll post and edit for you.
I'm sorry this board is causing you so much grief. On this version of ProBoards, you may only enter up to 1000 characters per post. Posts longer than that will be automatically cut down by the server (a good reason to write long posts in word). When ProBoards 4 is launched, this will no longer be an issue. Incidentally, we will have all kinds of other new stuff as well. So far there is no word when the new version will be launched. I think we can definitely expect glitches when it happens, though, so when stuff like this happens I get hopeful that Patrick Clinger is working his magic.

Hey, the IM email notification feature is now working! Excellent! Much easier, since the masthead obscures the IM notification box in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Thanks Hathaway and Mastermind! D.

Hi MH and CM: The new banner up top is much easier to read and allows the Private Messages to be seen on login. Thanks! Q: Can we remove the ads? Or would that make your costs prohibitive? I would be willing to send in a donation to help out. D.

Thanks, Dom Hopefully the load is not as slow for those who were having trouble with the other logo. The ad free service is available again, and it costs $6.99 a month for 50,000 page views. If anyone would like to donate to make the board ad free, they are very welcome to do it. We currently have no plans for getting rid of the ads, but as we post more banners and some "caption this" photos, we may move the logo and menu bar below the ads so that the pages don't look too cluttered.

Hi - new question for MH and CM:
I tried to reply to the Concerned thread and the reply button dissapeared. Yet other threads are fine. Is that thread locked?
Thanks,
D.

Yep, just a bug. The thread is unlocked now, sorry for the inconvenience. In fixing that I discovered that a few of the headers and footers contained errors, and some of the scripts I had in place were no longer working, like the cell highlight. If you scroll over the boards, or the threads on the boards and they don't light up in some places, please let me know where. I also noticed that a few of the scripts became visible on one of the boards (the squad). I don't know if that was my mistake, and it just took me this long to notice, or if that was another part of the system glitch. So, let me know if you see any weird stuff (HTML or Java scripts) written above or below any of the boards. Thanks

Hey Moderators, This afternoon whenever I tried to get to the message boards I got the message "Too many servers, please try again in 30 seconds". Well, that was the gist of the message, I don't remember exact words. Was everybody checking the posts at 5:00 or is my pooter getting silly? Obviously I'm on now, I was just curious. Thanks!

I'd gotten that message yesterday or the day before too, catbird. Naturally, I assumed it was my computer working against me and causing me to have to do.......well, work. At work. What they pay me to do here. Can you imagine?
So I'm vaguely curious too.

It's not your computer, or a system glitch. There are a lot more boards on this server than just ours. When the server experiences heavy traffic, it must lock commands out to protect itself from overload. If the server becomes overloaded, it will crash and we will be without this board for a week at least instead of just for 30 seconds here and there.
When it happens, just wait a little while and then click the refresh button on your browser or come back later. Sorry for any inconvenience.
