Wow. Robert Downey Jr. So good in this one: sexy, humourous and in incredible physical shape. I really enjoyed this movie.

Robert Downey Jr. is fantastic in Iron Man. He is so funny ! This movie has adventure, serious message and great CGI. Good cast and there will be a sequel ! Not too preachy ....

Because he did such a great job in the movie, I thought he was worth the effort of putting up a mini-bio of some lesser-known facts about him (It's from Wiki)
- He was born in New York, New York
- He played the title role in Charlie Chaplin (Best Actor Oscar Nomination. Slapstick is definitately in his varied repetoire)
- When he was 20, he joined the Saturday Night Live cast for one season. His recurring character was Jimmy Chance a hipster movie critic
- He's a talented impersonator: Elvis, George Micheal, Sean Penn, etc
- He dropped out of Santa Monica High School to pursue acting
- His critically-acclaimed role of Julian a cocaine-addicted rich boy in Less than Zero who eventually overdoses and dies, was for Downey like the "ghost of Christmas Future", since his drug habit was fuelled by the role with him becoming an "exaggeration of the character" in real life.
- went several times through drug treatment programs unsuccessfully, explaining in 1999 to a judge: "It's like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal".
- He also explained his relapses by claiming to be addicted to drugs since the age of eight, and having bipolar disorder involving severe mood swings.
- been in jail several times for drug possession and intoxication (and had the same defence team as OJ simpson)
- Nominated Emmy Award in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category (Ally McBeal)
- won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a mini-series or TV Film
- appeared as a writer and singer on Vonda Shepard's Ally McBeal: For Once in My Life album - sang with Sting: "Every Breath You Take".
- would have been the love interest in America's Sweethearts if not arrested. (I personally think he lucked out by missing that one)
- lip-synced to Elton John's "I want Love"
- Mel Gibson, close friend, paid his insurance bond so he could act in "The Singing Detective" a movie
- Downey released his debut musical album, The Futurist, on Sony Classical, and he designed its cover art
- named "Man of the Year" by Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals
- guest starred on Family Guy, voicing Lois Griffin's long lost, mentally disturbed brother Patrick Pewterschmidt
- dated actress Sarah Jessica Parker and Marisa Tomei
- has a teenage son named Indio
- Downey says he has been drug free since 2001 thanks to the help of his family, therapy, meditation, twelve-step recovery programs, yoga and wing chun.[5]
- He has described his religious beliefs as "Jewish-Buddhist," although he has been interested in the past by Christianity and the Hare Krishna ideology.[
- Downey was surprisingly cast for the title character in the film Iron Man,[32] with director Jon Favreau explaining the choice by stating: "Downey Jr. wasn't the most obvious choice but he understood what makes the character tick. He found a lot of his own life experience in Tony Stark". Favreau insisted Downey would be to Iron Man what Johnny Depp is to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy; a lead actor that could both elevate the quality of the film and increase the public's interest in it.
- For the role Downey had to gain more than 20 pounds of muscle in five months so as to look like he "had the power to forge iron". The film was globally released between April 30 and May 3, 2008 grossing over $100 million in the United States and Canada and receiving rave reviews which cite Downey's performance as a highlight of the film. As a result, both Downey and Favreau have already stated their interest in making Iron Man a trilogy. - He will also make a small appearance as Iron Man's Tony Stark in the upcoming film The Incredible Hulk as a part of Marvel Studios' attempt to depict the same Marvel Universe on film
- Robert Downey Jr. himself was referenced by the comic book character Nick Fury in the Ultimates (the Ultimate-universe counterpart of the Avengers), long before he was cast as Tony Stark.

I didn't have much faith in it. Just another typical superhero film. When my brother expressed interest in seeing this film - he asked me and my other brother to go with him if his friends didn't end up going to see it. I hesitated and finally said yes. Then after his friends did backed out - I said I'd go with him. I really had wanted to see a film that night so I didn't mind going. And I turned out pleasantly surprised. I really loved the humor in this! I do highly recommend this one.

I just saw the trailer for his new comedy feature: Tropic Thunder. It's controversial but I personally thinks he nails his character. I hope it lives up to the hilarity promised by the trailer. Here the link FYI. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSI15ltIacI

My eleven-year-old friend Zach saw this movie with a friend. Zach proclaimed it "the best superhero movie ever!" I finally got to see it last night, with Zach, who was eager to see it a second time. I don't know if it's the "best superhero movie ever," but it's awfully good. I don't want to overpraise it. It's not a movie you haven't seen before. But it's so well crafted and written. It has a serious message that serves a strong underpinning, but it never forgets that it's essentially about a cool guy who builds a cool suit to do cool things. Wonderfully acted, although Gwyneth Paltrow is a bit wasted as the Girl Friday. Jeff Bridges is awesome, and Robert Downey, Jr., shows why people put up with him. He's a great film actor and perfect in this role. The film has a couple of the funniest moments I can remember in a film for a long time, and the script is very tight. The audience I saw it with (a pretty good size for a weekday night for a film that's been out for a while) had a real buzz of energy from it.
Highly enjoyable, really fun movie. Be sure to stay after the credits if you're a comics fan, and watch for Stan Lee's cameo.

'Mazing! I am so convinced that I have to see this film. But for this thread, I would steered clear.
The stakeholders should send each of you people a four-figure public relations fee. Make that five figures. With flowers and a cherry on top.

Have been a reluctant fan of Robert Downey Jr since Charlie Chaplin. If you haven't seen him in that, you must, to understand how deeply talented & creative he is. As Patcat said, no wonder everyone puts up with his crap. I hope he has finally found happiness, or least a release from his demons.
Finally got a chance to see this & thought it, and he, were fantastic. Agreed that Paltrow was under used. Jeff Bridges was great. The plot would have been totally hokey in the hands of lesser actors, that's for sure. If I were a 12 year old boy, I would definitely want to see it again and pre-order the DVD. The way movies are being released so quickly, the wait won't be long.

When I think of him I see him as Chaplin and the lost soul in an old movie that, I guess, mirrored his life. It was about a young man struggling to conquer his addictions and self destructive behaviors. I enjoy his work and that of Johnny Depp.
