Vincent is on the massive guest list for this year's upcoming Toronto Film Festival slated for the first week in September. His film "The Narrows" will be presented. Jeff Goldblum (and a film of his) is also scheduled to appear. Toronto Film FestivalAny members here from the Toronto area?

Francois Velle's "The Narrows" starring Vincent D'Onofrio will be shown three times during the 2008 Toronto Film Festival: Monday, September 8th at 6:15 PM Tuesday, September 9th at 7:45 PM Saturday, September 13th at 3 PM Single tickets are $19.29; students and seniors pay $16.67 (??!!) Tickets may be purchased online or via phone. They go on sale September 3rd. VISA cards only. Will VDO appear at any of these screenings? Your guess is as good as mine (though if I were to toodle up to Toronto I'd probably pick the first showing.) Our friends in Canada can expect a plethora of press coverage for the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, according to this very long, highly exuberant Canada News Wire release -- excerpted to show its implied promise of a VDO interview. (Jeff Goldblum too). No doubt in this multiplatformed world much of this stuff will end up on the Internet. However to get a sense of how TIFF earned the reputation of industry/media circus it so richly deserves, you've got to read the full release at www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/September2008/02/c8780.htmlAL P.S. Both D'Onofrio and Goldblum will be attending to promote films that are yet to win U.S. distribution. Matt Damon, on the other hand, will be there fighting child poverty. (Ah, the A-List, they are not like VDO and JG; they have distribution.) P.P.S. Maybe a helpful Canadian member can advise us about the shows and outlets mentioned. ----------------------- Attention Entertainment Editors: Lights, Camera, Action! CTV Delivers the Most Star-Studded and Comprehensive Coverage of 2008 Toronto International Film Festival - CTV's Festival Headquarters is home to unprecedented, multi- platform coverage - more than any other broadcaster - on CTV, eTalk,Star!, Bravo!, MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic, MTV, FashionTelevisionChannel, Canada AM, CTV News, CTV Newsnet, CP24 and CHUM Radio... This link www.ctv.ca/mini/tiff2008/leads to a CTV site from which you can probably catch all the TIFF photos and videos. See "Festival Buzz" in lower left corner of page -- a section which leads to yet more links. Maybe we should have a "Spot D'Onofrio (and Goldblum)" contest. AL

Yes. VDO bailed and no mention why.... Two posters at USA (Dulce & NLFan) specifically bought plane tickets & flew to Toronto to meet Vincent. They are making the most of their disappointment - are attending the screening of "The Narrows" and finally meeting each other. They are cyber pals. So that's a good thing. I wonder if celebs realize how fans put themselves out to meet them? How they sometimes incur significant expense? I hope Vincent has a very good reason for not attending after being on the list of attendees.

I suppose he might have canceled out because of schedule problems. They start filming in a week and learning a new script, meetings, all that goes into an episode. I hope that is the only reason. It is a shame that he could not be there for his films premiere. I am sure he is disappointed.

There could be millions of reasons why Mr. D'Onofrio couldn't make it. Family emergency, sudden need for shooting on LOCI, the baby is teething, etc.
Look, I have every sympathy for people who go to things in hopes of seeing someone they admire. But actors and others like them owe us only their work. They have their own lives and aren't at our beck and call. And Mr. D'Onofrio is definitely an actor, not a celebrity.
I'm sure that the Toronto Film Festival, like most of these things, had some note saying that appearances by the actors and others were subject to schedules and other possible problems.
I don't mean to seem hostile, DonnaJo, but I tend to see that anything an actor does beyond his/her work as a bonus. The behavior of these fans seems a little close to stalking to me. But it's Monday and I'm in need of caffeine.

Hopefully they will release his film here soon. I am looking forward to it. Does anyone know when that is?
Maybe Mr. Goldblum and Mr. D'Onofrio will do some interviews together before the new season. That would be fun to see.

"The Narrows" doesn't have a U.S. distributor. That's the principal reason for debuting indie films at TIFF -- exhibiting in hopes of getting a distribution contract.
Unfortunately, according to Variety, there are fewer buyers at TIFF this year than in any previous year. In addition (according to the same report), the indie thing seems to have lost its momentary cachet with Hollywood.
Major studio movies -- like the Coen brothers' star-filled "Burn After Reading" --are overshadowing all of the indie films at the festival. The Canadian press coverage of TIFF seems to be focused on razzle-dazzle after-parties and whether Brad Pitt will run into Jennifer Aniston.
All of the above now make Toronto an unlikely place for a small film like "The Narrows" to get any attention. Were I VDO watching this media circus from New York, I'd chuck it too.
AL
P.S. Jeff Goldblum is scheduled to attend for the same reason: His "Adam Resurrected" doesn't have distribution either, making so-called "pre-Oscar buzz" at Telluride for his performance somewhat premature.
P.P.S. I'm sorry that those two VDO fans are disappointed but I think the only no-lose reason for taking on the expense of attending a film festival is a great love for films.

THE NEW YORK TIMES has had several articles on the Toronto festival, noting, as the VARIETY articles did, the independent film scene is not what it was. One of the NYT articles noted that a lot of the films at the festival, including THE NARROWS, were about New York City.

I also agree that Vincent does not have an obligation to attend these affairs just because a few fans will spend time & money taking a chance on seeing him. Actually, the fans who went to the Toronto Film Festival to see VDO were extremely gracious & understanding about what happened. They attended last night's screening of "The Narrows" and promised to post their thoughts on the film. I wonder if anyone involved in "The Narrows" was there? Hopefully one or both of the two young stars showed, or maybe the Director and/or the Producer? And without a US Distributor, I guess we'll have to wait until someone posts excerpts on YouTube, like "Five Minutes, Mr. Wells."

The reel has posted reviews of THE NARROWS by the two fans. And you're right DonnaJo, they were very gracious and understanding. I stand corrected and chastened. By the way, they liked the movie a lot and did get to meet the director and others involved with the film, who had nice things to say about Mr. D'Onofrio.

Sorry, but with respect I can't for the life of me see how fans going to a film festival in hopes of seeing VDO could be called stalking. Birddogging him around town or staking out his apartment, that's one thing, but going to celeb-fest in expectations of seeing celebrities sounds like normal. Actually, it sounds like what the organisers hoped for when they lined up stars to attend TIFF. Is VDO not a celebrity? Coulda fooled me. Coulda fooled many people, I suspect, including his family, when he showed up to launch his sister's rib joint. He certainly wasn't lending his name to the business as Food Critic for the New York Times Me, I feel sorry for the fangirlies. Hard to get a real-life glimpse of their object of adoration if they don't do any stage work (of recent note). And usre, there could be a million reasons why VDO didn't go to Toronto. I only hope that the reason isn't "Oh, why bother?"

I read The Reel this morning and it sounds like they had a very good time. If there was applause from the crowd, maybe its good reviews will encourage some support for distribution. If a company thinks there is some money to be made, maybe....
