This film wasn't released anywhere near me.
I hope they hurry up and put it on DVD! ;D

When I saw Thumbsucker a few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to receive a free mini-poster of the movie. To those of you who still might be able to see it (I guess it's playing in Maine, Massachusetts and Washington this week in the US), I suggest asking your ticket seller about the poster.
As for the movie it was...interesting. Excellent acting, odd story. Vincent D'Onofrio came through with his part, as he usually does.

Is this right? I read on another board that this film will be released on DVD on January 24, 2006! This seems very fast after theatrical release, considering how long it took for it to show up in theaters. Then again, the theatrical release was quite limited, so the DVD release was inevitable.

That's the date Amazon.ca has listed for the DVD release.

Thanks, NikkiGreen. I checked Amazon.com for US release and it's listed for that date on that site too.

Thumbsucker was released in Australia today, but only one cinema is showing it in the Melbourne region, and it's not one that I can get to. Looks like I have to wait for DVD. It's not fair - I was really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

BBC newsArgentine win at Swedish festivalArgentinian director Juan Diego Solanas has won the top prize at the Stockholm International Film Festival. Solanas, 39, beat off competition from 17 other films to take the Bronze Horse trophy for Nordeste (North-east). The film, which stars French actress Carol Bouquet as a wealthy woman who travels to Argentina to adopt a baby, explores the child trafficking trade. The 16th Stockholm Film Festival - which ends on Sunday - has showcased 160 films from nearly 40 countries. Nordeste is the fourth film Solanas has worked on since he started out as a cinematographer on the 1998 film La Nube (Clouds). This was followed by two short films - L'Homme Sans Tete (The Man Without A Head) in 2003 and Photomateurs (Photograbber) in 2004. As well as winning Best Film, Nordeste also triumphed in the best actress category, with Bouquet and Argentinian actress Aymara Rovera sharing the prize. The best actor award went to Vincent D'Onofrio for Mike Mills' film Thumbsucker. American director Miranda July's Me and You And Everyone We Know won the best first film award. Annie Griffin picked up the best script prize for Festival, a black comedy that takes place at the Edinburgh Film Festival, while Taika Waititi's Sons of Tu: The God of War took home top honours in the best short film category. Stockholm International Film festivalBest male actor – Vincent D’Onofrio (Thumbsucker) Motivation: This years award for best male actor is presented to a performance that builds on a fairly small part, and grows into a surprisingly moving, living, breathing individual, as real as all of us.

I just watched this DVD. He gives a very good performance. It is quite different from Goren or many of his other movie roles. I do not think he will be typecast like many other actors in TV are when they transfer from TV to movies.
Ebert and Roeper singled out his performance in this movie as they have with some of his other movies. Another critic says he has been absent from movies too long.
It is unusual to find an actor who has received better reviews from movie critics than he has from the TV critics. Many times it is the other way around.

Netflix.com has Thumbsucker available now. The best description I've read is, "Quiet and smart". I sent it back without watching special features, which I regret. Just a good movie.
I think that if this 'indie' came out in a couple years, it would be in more theaters, thanks to some of the movies that are getting so much attention for the Oscars this year. The 'mainstream' audience has not been interested in independent films until recently. I think we have IFC to thank, in part, for bringing more good movies to us, but I also think the movies America is buzzing about, (not my words!), must have had more cash to advertise.
However it's happening, it's about time!!
