The film has its problems, but it's enjoyable to watch, and I agree--both Mr. Hines and Mr. D'Onofrio are excellent. It's proof that if he had wanted to, Mr. D'Onofrio could have been a movie star. He just oozes charm and charisma in the first part of the film, before his character gets hurt. He really captures the confidence, boarding on arrogance, of a star athlete. It helps, of course, that he actually is big enough to suggest he could play tight end.

This is one of my fav. "little films with a big heart" It was one of my confirmation that Vincent is indeed versatile. Up until I saw this, I had only seen him play heavies, bad guys and bad attitudes. Good Luck showed me his comic edge which is really good. I was surprised. And also, like Patcat said, his leading actor persona was very believable. He looked fantastic in the beginning. Very convincing and very sexy performance. He is such a complete actor, I now believe he can do just about any role and do a top job. His choice in films was always a head scratcher for me. 1/2 of them are not good quality, but he always seems to shine. Vincent is qualtiy - period.

Even my stuffy mother liked this one & she can't stand swearing & pretends there is no such thing as sex .... so as she was laughing at how the two lead actors interacted; how they handled there troubles & even got a little 'sumthin sumthin' I was floored.
I think it is an absolute gem of a flick .... Patcat - what issues? For a good old sit down and leave the world behind, this is one of the best.

I think it's a film that can't make up his mind what it wants to be--a family film, or a realistic view at disabilities, or a good feeling movie. So I find it a bit uneven, but definitely a good movie.

ah, yes it is hard to put in a genre - BUT so is life & sometimes the guys were funny and helpful to each other & sometimes they were obstacles & more dramatic than funny. I think that being hard to "type" means good things from the contents of this film.
It certainly doesn't follow any boy has problem, boy meets girl & can't hook up; girl helps with problem - Bang - hook up & the end protocol (yeah, I'm being mean, but even the action films have such a structure - only the names & cars used have been changed)
It is all unique material & I really must say I adore the flick. No mood I'm in could I not appreciate this one.

I really like this movie and think it does a good job of showcasing Vincent's versatility. I like him in comic parts --not being the "heavy" all the time. My other fav is his role in Nunzio's Second Cousin, 'cause it's funny but "dark" at the same time.

What say!
It is truly a formulaic overcoming the odds as well as a feel good movie! The underdogs come out on top even if they came in last.
Good Luck is a movie I get out when I want a good laugh. The physical comedy of Vincent is hilarious. He truly shows his versatililty and range in this movie. He truly has comedic savy. He can be very funny, charming, endearing, and sexy at the same time.. ;D

I can’t believe I’ve never posted on this thread! I pretty much swamped the Good Luck thread on the old board! And yes, it is one of my very favorite movies.
I also enjoyed The Red Sneakers. And yeah, his character is a trip! Gotta love those shades! (Every scene... he never even takes em off when he’s watching a video in a dark room!! LOL!!) And the bit at the end was great fun! But The Red Sneakers is more than just a fun/funny movie. It’s a really good kid’s movie, with some valuable content (including some stuff about kinesthetic learning styles that should be required viewing for teachers). I’m sorry it didn’t get more promotion/publicity at the time. I’m glad they’re at least showing it on TV.

I enjoyed "Good Luck" because it really showcases Vincent D'Onofrio's considerable comedic talents. And the way the movie pokes fun at the whole macho jock mentality while delivering its subtle message of tolerance and acceptance of people who are different, is an added bonus.
I especially note the scene where Olee tosses his ex-girlfriend's things off the balcony. This is a turnabout of the usual end-of-relationship scene we usually see--ordinarily it's the female throwing out the guy and his clothes. Seeing D'Onofrio do it, and the circumstances that led to it, is a real treat.
I really appreciate that this movie didn't resort to a sappy ending in which the D'Onofrio and Gregory Hines characters win the race against all odds. These two did indeed "win" but not in the conventional sense; they won respect for themselves and each other for daring to enter the race and facing the challenge it represents.
I do wish D'Onofrio selects more comedic film roles in the future. My one sad note about "Good Luck" and "The Red Sneakers" is that these are the only two movies D'Onofrio and Hines were in together. I wonder what these two gifted actors could have done in the future if not for Hines' untimely death?

I watched Good Luck with a friend, yesterday morning, while preparing for her departure. It was a hilarious movie. VDO looked cool in that football gear, somehow believable. The scene where he watches (or rather: listens to) the talk show with his ex-girlfriend, resulting into the „throw all the crap out“-scene was somehow believable. But the fact, that usually the woman throws the man‘s stuff out, the corny love theme in the background and the fact that he throws it all onto an ill-fated vehicle parked underneath made it hilarious. And I liked the plot. That wheelchair guy, superficially a loser-type (had sex for the first time at 20 and even had to pay for it) manages to return Olee a zest for life and to a certain degree his self-esteem. I know that all too well. You have to believe in yourself, than you can fxxx and shxx to your satisfaction. Well, this odd couple crossed the finish line after all the others, and the raft was keel-up, but nevertheless, they participated, and that, according to the Olympian idea, is all.

This movie sounds really cool. What is the rating on it?

Do mean an MPAA rating? If that's your thinking about, it's rated R.
