Trevor Snyder at 411 Mania voted this the #1 Favorite TV Episode of All Time:1. Homicide: Life on the Street - "Subway" (Season 6)
A couple of cops are dispatched to find Lange's girlfriend, while Bayliss stays with him, keeping him company in his final minutes. It all builds up to an absolutely devastating resolution. No joke, this is one of the most intense episodes of any show you will ever see. In fact, I seem to remember PBS even having an entire documentary about this episode before. Am I crazy, or does anyone else remember this? Regardless, this was a great hour of TV, and an episode you'll never be able to forget once you've seen it.
I just noticed that this Trevor guy, whose last line is "an episode you'll never be able to forget once you've seen it....says in his review that it's Bayliss who stays with Lange, keeping him company in his final minutes. ;D

The shot taken track level of VDO's twisted lower body was chilling.

I was a huge Homicide fan and saw this when it was first aired. At the time I didn't know who Vincent D'Onofrio was, but thought the actor did a great job. Now that I have recently become A VDO fan I can't bare to go back and rewatch it!

It is worth every penny, OBC. It is a heartwrenching episode, as many of the episodes of that series were. But Vincent was so incredible in this one that it really stands out as the best of the best. Be sure you have some tissues handy. You will need them.

Darnit! Now I'm going to have to out and buy the DVD so I can see this. Netflix carries the entire Homicide series. You could join up for the lowest membership (something like $5.50 a month for two rentals per month) and rent Season 6, Disk 1. That's where The Subway episode is. It's alot cheaper than paying for the whole 6 disk collection. Especially since it's not something you want to continually watch. I've been renting the Homicide series in this manner for about a year. I'm up to Season 5, disk 4. I already own Season 6 - bought it before I knew about Netflix. As you might already know, the Season 6, Disk 2 contains the episode "All Is Bright" which features Kate Erbe as a woman afflicted with aids. It's very good. You could make that your second rental.

A very kind forum friend helped me out and I have finally watched this. I'm so stunned right now, I don't feel like I can breathe. WOW! I'm sure I'll have more to say later. Right now, WOW is all I can manage, along with the tears blurring my eyes. Vincent has taken my breath with this one. Don't know when I'll get it back.

That performance definitely has staying power... and the interplay with Andre Braugher - perfection. It's been a couple of years since I first saw this, and it's still a WOW!!! (the first time I saw this I sought out reruns of HLOTS on a local station specifically because of VDO's guesting - and became a post cancellation fan of the show).

It's been almost 24 hours. . .my breath is still gone and I can't stop thinking about it. That scene, right at the end, where Pemberton is holding Lange's face in his hands and they are forehead-to-forehead. . .stunning in its poignancy. I feel like calling Vincent up and saying "Honey, you are THE MAN!!!" (Right, like I could call him, but still. . .)
As usual, his talent knocks me off my feet.
