Mean-spirited? I read some reviews that describe "The Break-Up" as a tamer, milder, gentler version of "The War of the Roses." Now THAT movie is the poster child for mean-spirited if ever there was one.
Of course, these same reviews also say The BU isn't very funny either. I think this is another movie I won't be paying top dollar for at the multiplex. I'll just wait for it to come out on DVD and just rent it for $1 on bargain night.

I saw the movie yesterday and I enjoyed it. I wasn't as funny as I was hoping it would be but I did laugh. VDO was fantastic, in the few scenes that he was in you couldn't keep your eyes off him. My fave scene was the last one with the brothers having a touching moment and Vince's character Gary trying to give VDO a hug...awesome

I am definitely waiting for the DVD for no other reason than to watch the scenes with the supporting actors like Judy Davis and Vincent D'Onofrio and possibly listen to the commentary or see deleted scenes. Given the short windows of DVD releases (but for season 2 of L&O:CI) I suspect we may see the DVD by late October.

Okay, I saw this yesterday with the Hubby (after going to see X-Men 3 - Hugh Jackman - WHOA BABY!! - we didn't have anything to do, so we stayed for The Break Up.) I will try not to spoil anything so, no spoiler warning needed. First of all, the theater was packed. More than were in the theater for X-Men, for sure. Nice mix, young and old, couples and groups of men and women. Seems the film is appealing to a large audience. ( And I just read it actually beat XM:TLS at the box office.) The movie is hilarious in parts, but also touchingly sad in others. You want to scream at Vaughn and Aniston's characters for the pettiness of their arguments and attempts at revenge, until you realize that you have had those arguments and made those attempts in one way or another in your own relationships. (I don't mean to make the movie sound too deep, that was just the way it resounded with me personally.) And now to the most important aspect of the film, Vincent. He is in four scenes, the first being a dinner scene at Gary (Vaughn) and Brooke's (Anistons) condo. He looks all fidgety and uncomfortable in his suit, but I believe this is purposefully done to add to his character. He is the oldest brother, runs the business, has the plan down - " To dominate the Chicago tourism industry by land, sea, and air... buses, squibs, and helicopters" His delivery is at once quirky and demented... he got BIG LAUGHS from the entire theater! ;D The second scene takes only about a minute, but the third scene is the real doozy. Gary is being his usual selfish self when it comes to getting his paperwork done, and Dennis (VDO) is just flummoxed by his brothers self absorption - he plays it perfectly fidgety again, his body expressing his frustration. The Handkerchief Thing, as it has come to be known, is priceless. I have to admit, I wanted to just punch Gary for dumping his responsibilities on his darling older brother! Again, laughs from the audience. ;D The final scene, shortly before the end, is just darling. Gary attempts to make things right with Dennis, and the hug that results is just gold. The whole theater erupted. ;D Well, you have just read my first ever "Vincent on The Big Screen" review. Hope you all enjoyed!! (And please remember, these are my opinions, yours may differ ) caseyswife

It might but I doubt it The boy managed to make a powerful impression in just three and half scenes. I was thinking of going to see TBU after I saw the X-men but it seems so decadent to pay another $12 for a second showing.

Well, you have just read my first ever "Vincent on The Big Screen" review. Hope you all enjoyed!! (And please remember, these are my opinions, yours may differ ) caseyswife Thank you. Well at least he did have some dialog from one reviewer I was almost convinced he was going to be like one of the Marx Brothers or "Larry's brothers Daryl on Newhart". Like I have always thought, where many TV actors become film actors with less success, he has received more critical acclaim for most of his movies than he has from some of the TV reviewers. I guess he will have to star as a patient on House or as Monk's cousin to get nominated again for an Emmy like he did for Homicide.

I was thinking of going to see TBU after I saw the X-men but it seems so decadent to pay another $12 for a second showing. My Hubby gets discount movie tickets to Carmike Cinemas through work - we only pay the $5.50 matinee price no matter when we go! Gotta love the Hubby!! Just a few more notes... *The youngest brother, played by Cole Hauser, has the somewhat unfortunate name of Lupus. *Vincents' interaction with Brooke's brother (the guy who is singing "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in the trailer) at the dinner party is just plain funny. The two characters share the same obsessive/demented nature in re: their professions; VDO in regards to his tour business, the brother in regards to his a cappella group. The audience LOVED it!! *Vaughn makes one especially crass remark regarding Anistons sister during an argument. Everyone in the theater went "OH!" *Jon Favreau and VV are great in their scenes together, although you wonder why Favreau's revelations to Vaughn at the end of the film took so damned long. caseyswife

I actually liked it - I think it may have gotten bad press because of the ending? However, I thought the ending was appropriate. Sometimes the ending can overshadow the rest if one dislikes it so much. It was one of the funnier comedies I have seen - not slapstick - just really funny lines.

i saw it at the movie theater with my cousin and her friend. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but nonetheless, I still liked it! We were watching the beginning credits and I saw Vincent D'Onofrio, and I yelled "OH MY GOSH!! I LOVE HIM!! I TOTALLY KNOW THAT GUY!! HE'S GOREN ON CRIMINAL INTENT..and none of you know what I'm talking about..." then I just kept my mouth shut for the rest of the movie. LOL. I didn't really care for the ending, but now that I look at it, it was probably the best ending for the movie. And OMG I loved the part where Gary tries to make it up to Dennis by helping out..I said to myself (to myself, due to the first "outburst fiasco") "YES! I knew he'd end up being a good guy...wow Vincent is tall...". Yes, my mind tends to wonder. Relatively good movie!! 1 and a half thumbs up!!

I watched the DVD this weekend and listened to the commentaries regarding the Vincent D'Onofrio scenes. Both the director and Vince Vaughn said that he added back story and several of the non-verbal aspects of the character. They said he made the character more sympathetic (the director said "heartbreaking") and unique.
He is seen briefly and makes a few comments in the behind the scenes interview along with several of the supporting actors who discuss how they knew Vince Vaughn and what they liked about acting in the movie. The supporting actors were the best part of the movie. Many of these actors added non-scripted nuances to their characters.

I picked up a copy of this as a cheap ex-rental of this, and I think the Aussie edition is lacking a few of the special features on the US edition. Either that, or I just disregarded them once I discovered there were no outtakes with the wonderful Mr D'Onofrio.... This isn't the funniest movie I've ever seen, and I normally don't go for any type of romance... Okay, yes, the only reason I saw it, and the only reason I bought it was because VDO is in it. And for that reason, I was glad I got it cheap. Because I forked out $35 for Ed Wood, not realising VDO was in it for all of about 3 minutes, and it wasn't even his voice... *takes deep breath* And now I've finished ranting... I loved watching VDO in this film. Stuff the rest of it. I'll just skip to the scenes that he's actually in - just like I did with Chris Noth in The Perfect Man. LOL ;D One thing, though, slightly OT... Vince Vaughan is actually a bigger guy than VDO. If CI were to introduce Goren's brother further down the track, I wonder if Vince Vaughan could be aged in appearance to play the older brother? He's got the physique for it already. Just musing...

If CI were to introduce Goren's brother further down the track, I wonder if Vince Vaughan could be aged in appearance to play the older brother? He's got the physique for it already. If CI can make Rita Moreno look frail and sickly, it shouldn't be any problem to age Vince Vaughn a few years. The only problems I can foresee with a potential VV casting are a) his price tag for the guest star gig, b) his limited availability, and c) his not wanting to be typecast as a brother of a Vincent D'Onofrio character. Other than these minor details...
