Happy Accidents (2000)
Like many of us, Ruby Weaver (Marisa Tomei) doesn’t have a lot of luck with men. However, after a string a losers, Ruby is finally dating who she thinks is the man of her dreams. Sam Deed (Vincent D’Onofrio) is loving, kind and very sweet. But soon Sam reveals a very a disturbing secret. He’s not really from Dubuque. He’s actually from the future, the year 2470 to be exact.
The reason why Sam went back into the past is because he’s escaping prosecution for his sister’s death. He’s also on a mission to find Ruby who he first noticed in a photograph back in 2470.
Ruby is aghast over this bit of news. She’s sure Sam playing with her head, but she’s fallen in love with him. However, she knows she can fix him so they can continue their relationship. Ruby figures Sam can’t be truly insane considering he’s the best boyfriend she’s ever had. Yet, she has so many questions that Sam won’t quite answer. For instance, who the hell is Chrystie Delancy and how does this person fit in the equation?
Happy Accidents is one of those sweet, quirky films that is more charming than treacly. It should have gotten more attention that it did. Marisa Tomei is perfectly cast as the befuddled Ruby. And Vincent D’Onofrio proves he is one of our most versatile actors as the adorably eccentric Sam. Happy Accidents has some fun cameos that keep the movie very interesting. It tells the story of trying to make love happen despite certain obstacles, like when Prince Charming comes from the future.
