Just saw this last night....
Geez, I had forgotten what a ghastly show Miami Vice was (I loved it at the time). Just the nonstop music-video-ness of it. It was annoying...the long closeups, the meaningful stares, I was like ARGH! Stop! It hurts! The dialogue, yikes. Why did I love this show so much back when I was younger? Did I have no taste at all?
Was thrilled to see VDO but this role did nothing for him except maybe give him experience. Glad he didn't get typecast into this sort of role forever. Didn't get to see any VDO flare, that's for sure.
One thing I really noticed was how flabby and blah he looked, compared to today. He's much more fit and toned now, and his face has much more depth and character and interest in it. Age becomes him well. Back then he was Welch's grape juice, now he's a nice Merlot. MMMM

Sarahtea,
The reason Vincent was heavy was due to the fact that he had gained 70 pounds for his role as PVT. Pyle in Full Metal Jacket. If you are able to view some of his roles even just a year later, you'll see a very fit and handsome Vincent. A good example is Bill in Mystic Pizza.

Sarahtea:
It's become a business, helping actors sculpt their bodies to meet the demands of the role and then helping them reshape back again. Daniel Craig's body in Casino Royal was nothing like what he looked like in Layer Cake. Nowadays actors have the best technology, nutrition, excercise routines around, often at the behest of the studios who want them to go to these lengths to physically change into their character. I don't know of any actors who have taken that one step further to having plastic surgery done to meet the demands of the role but I'm sure it's the next step.
In many of Vincent's earlier films, most notably Full Metal Jacket he took it upon himself, for the sake of the role to change is physical appearance. I think he knowingly sacrificed his health to create the best Private Pyle.
At least three guys at work want to buy the Miami Vice car. go figure!

I don't know of any actors who have taken that one step further to having plastic surgery done to meet the demands of the role but I'm sure it's the next step. From IMDb trivia for Star 80:Mariel Hemingway received breast implants shortly before playing the role of Playboy model Dorothy Stratten, but denies that was the reason she got them.

And Star 80 goes back to 1983. What shocks/surprises me is this sort of "giving one's all for the role" hasn't happened more often. At least I'm not aware of it happening more often.
