Ever noticed how often movies include sports references or scenes?
We have. And so in honor of Sunday's Academy Awards presentation, here are the Top 10 Sports Scenes in Non-Sports Movies.
10. The Falcon and the Snowman (1985). Spy Christopher Boyce ( Timothy Hutton) hits golf balls into the Pacific Ocean as Daulton Lee ( Sean Penn) tries to persuade his friend to join him in the drug trafficking business. Trivia: The actor who played Hutton's father (Charlie Boyce) died in January. Who was he?
9. The Birdcage (1996). Armand Goldman ( Robin Williams) attempts to talk football with his effeminate partner, Albert ( Nathan Lane): "Al, you old son of a gun! How do you feel about that call today? ... Fourth-and-3 play on [the Dolphins'] 30-yard line with only 34 seconds to go!" Replies Albert: "How do you think I feel? Betrayed, bewildered. ... Wrong response?" Trivia: Among director Mike Nichols' credits is a 1967 coming-of-age film. Name the movie and the pop song that includes an iconic sports line.
8. The Big Chill (1983). The gang gets together to pay their respects to Alex on the same weekend of the Michigan-Michigan State game. During halftime Meg Tilly, Kevin Kline, Tom Berenger and Jeff Goldblum play a game of tackle football. Trivia: What Spencer Davis classic song is playing during the game?
7. The Big Lebowski (1998). So many great scenes in this Coen Brothers classic, but my favorite is when Jesus Quintana (John Turturro) shines his ball and then yells at Dude ( Jeff Bridges), Walter ( John Goodman) and Donny ( Steve Buscemi), "I see you rolled your way into to semis. ... Liam and me, we're going to [mess] you up!" Trivia: Of the three main characters, which one never bowls during the movie?
6. Pulp Fiction (1994). Boss Marsellus Wallace ( Ving Rhames) tells boxer Butch Coolidge ( Bruce Willis) he's taking a fall in the fifth round. Trivia: What's the name of the boxer that Butch is going to fight? (Hint: "Character" by the same name played key role in Cast Away).
5. Forrest Gump (1994). Lots of great scenes here, but our favorite is when Forrest ( Tom Hanks) runs back a kickoff for a touchdown for Alabama as Coach Bear Bryant proclaims, "He must be the stupidest son-of-a-gun alive! ... But he sure is fast." Trivia: Which president hosts Forrest and the other All-Americans at the White House?
4. Rain Man (1988). Cue Raymond Babbitt ( Dustin Hoffman): "Who's on first. What's on second. I don't know is on third." Trivia: Name the shortstop.
3. American Beauty (1999). Lester Burnham ( Kevin Spacey) fantasizes about his teen-age daughter's best friend, Angela ( Mena Suvari), as she performs in a cheerleading routine during a timeout of a high school basketball game. Trivia: Name the "judge" who choreographed the Spartanettes' dance routine.
2. The Godfather Part II (1974). Michael Corleone ( Al Pacino) meets Hyman Roth ( Lee Strasberg) in his Miami home, where they discuss business while watching a football game on television. Roth: "I really enjoy watching [sports] in the afternoon. One of the things I love about this country." Trivia: What two college teams are playing during this scene?
1. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). Yes, the basketball game between the ward and staff members is a classic. And so is the fishing expedition. But the best sports scene takes place when Randle McMurphy ( Jack Nicholson), despondent because Nurse Ratched ( Louise Fletcher) won't allow ward members to watch Game 2 of the 1963 World Series, ad-libs the Yankees-Dodgers game: "Koufax kicks. He delivers. Mantle swings. It's a [bleeping] home run!!" Trivia: Which Hall of Fame announcer can be heard doing the original NBC radio broadcast later in the movie? (Hint: It's not Vin Scully.)
