Sam Waterston Receives Walk of Fame Star
Justice was served to venerable Law & Order star Sam Waterston when he received his own Star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the actor celebrated the honor with series creator Dick Wolf and longtime friend Ted Danson on hand.
Waterston, who’s spent 16 seasons playing Assistant D.A. Jack McCoy, it was an honor he accepted both humbly and with tongue firmly in cheek – “It’s gone to my head, so get people walking all over it right now to restore me some proportion,” he told the gathered crowd on Hollywood Boulevard – and he gave a fond shout out to his late L&O co-star: “If were Jerry Orbach were only alive it would be pretty near perfect – but it’s pretty near perfect now!”
The actor told TV Guide Magazine that he could not have imagined that McCoy would become one of television’s most enduring and indelible characters. “I have to say that I never expected it. I never aimed for it. But certainly is sweet!”
Waterston was especially enthusiastic about the pending prospect of Law & Order being renewed for a 21st season, which would place it above current champ Gunsmoke as the longest running scripted drama in television history – NBC has not made the official decision but execs have publicly pledged to extend the show.
“I will be so pleased, so thrilled,” said Waterston. “A lot of the people who were here today have given a huge chunk of their life to this and that would really be the icing on the cake. I hope that it [happens].” He also hinted that he’ll probably remain with the series until the bitter end – if, indeed, the show doesn’t outlast him. “Who knows? It might go on way past me. I hope that it does!”
Producer Wolf was cautiously optimistic about the show’s prospect for the historic renewal. “It's something that I've been talking about for probably the last eight years, that it was the only goal and it is the only goal. The show has won virtually every conceivable honor over the years, but I think that if we do get that record it's probably not going to be broken.”
Wolf also offered some teases as to the near future of all the series in the durable L&O franchise: “Law & Order is just more great episodes. I think the show is as strong as it's ever been. SVU – Obviously the big headline is that Sharon Stone is coming on for four episodes at the end of spring. And with Criminal Intent, it's an entirely, essentially new show. Jeff [Goldblum] was there last year but you've now got Saffron Burrows and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. It's an incredible cast.“
