Assuming Ross is the one who gets killed, I can see Goren being fired for insubordination, for continuing to investigate while bending NYPD rules, to find out the truth. He has a history of having issues with authority, he's been at odds with the Chief of Detectives before, plus the FBI presence would only exacerbate this trait of locking horns with those at the top of the food chain. I can then see Eames resigning in support of him. Who gets promoted? Maybe it's the way the new MCS Captain is introduced, perhaps the MEM character gets promoted and transferred to MCS to replace Ross.
Personally, I don't see the "surviving" characters returning if the actors involved were treated badly. If they made peace with what they had done for CI and have moved on, guest spots wouldn't be in their personal or professional future. Sometimes you just can't go home again or, in this case, return to the scene of the crime.

I may have to use the ASP bat on myself, but it occurred to me that there's no mention of Wheeler in any of this. Not that there really needs to be, but what if she's the resignation/death/promotion? Or perhaps it's a sign of how marginal the character was that she's not figuring into any of our speculations?

Perhaps Wheeler is going to resigns in order to be a full time mother until her daughter starts school?

I can't believe USA is intentionally telegraphing the ending by giving away the outcome in their promo videos. Unless they've completely lost their minds and decided to spill the beans and make everything obvious so that when the episode finally airs, we can all sit around and say "I saw that coming!"
BTW, from the advance descriptions it appears that the really dramatic revelation of what happens to whom will not occur until Part 2 airs. In consideration of the separation of the 2 parts for the season premiere, my plan is to post a single poll for the entire episode after Part 2 airs, rather than separate polls for each part. Is this acceptable or should I re-consider?

Having one poll at the conclusion of part two is a fine idea, Techguy. I don't think that we can adequately judge the episode until its totally finished. I think you are right that the tidbits in the promo are from Part One only. Which means we really have no idea what happens.

Goren's hugging Eames. :oThere's no doubt in my mind it's Ross who dies.

You're right, angua. Here's the link: www.usanetwork.com/series/criminalintent/All of the promos are here. You might have to wait for the newest one, where Goren is indeed consoling Eames. There is another one that I haven't seen, which exclusively features Nichols.

I don't know what I'm seeing in these promo clips anymore. The clips have such rapid cuts and scene changes I'm not sure if I'm seeing something or just imagining things. I don't see Goren hugging or consoling Eames at all, so if it's there it escapes me. And I also want to point out that what's in the promo clips might not show up in the aired episode. We've been led astray like this before, so I'll go with my gut instincts and hope for the best but expect the worst.

There is a definite hug (well kinda hug) there! Would Eames be upset about Ross dying? ASB me but Ross/Eames? Yuck.

I have to go with Techguy. It's impossible to really tell what's going on. I strongly suspect the week between part one and part two is going to be one of the longest of my life.

Eames looks like she's going to cry so to me it looks like a consoling-hug.

NBC has announced that Season 9 will premier on Sunday, June 20th at 10 pm. www.nbc.com/upcoming-law-and-order-criminal-intent/About the ShowPremieres on NBC Sunday, June 20th at 10/9c "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," Dick Wolf's third installment in the "Law & Order" franchise, follows the Major Case Squad as it investigates high-profile crimes. The cases often revolve around homicides, serial killers, VIP's, government officials and figureheads from the business and creative worlds. Unlike typical procedural dramas, "Criminal Intent" focuses on the criminal psyche. Psychological dysfunction, deviant behavior and the exploration of broken dreams become the backdrop for extraordinary and sometimes deadly stories. In Season 9, SAG Award nominee Saffron Burrows ("Boston Legal," "Troy") joins the cast as Detective Serena Stevens, a highly educated, worldly single parent with a broad range of life experiences to draw upon in solving even the toughest of cases. Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio joins the cast as Captain Zoe Callas who comes to MCS from Internal Affairs, where she honed the pragmatic style and political skillfulness that make her a standout captain. Academy Award and Emmy nominee Jeff Goldblum ("Adam Resurrected," "Jurassic Park") returns for Season 9 as Detective Zach Nichols, insightful and powerfully motivated to uncover the darkest side of human nature. Nichols uses his keen intelligence and offbeat charm to reveal the criminal intent behind his homicide cases. After a triumphant eight-season run, Emmy nominee Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian say goodbye to "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." The two-part season opener will showcase the brilliant partnership between Detectives Goren (D'Onofrio) and Eames (Erbe) as they, along with Detectives Nichols (Goldblum) and Stevens (Burrows), unravel a case with devastating consequences for Captain Ross (Bogosian).I think "devastating consequences" pretty much confirms that Ross dies.
