Patcat, I say both the Caps and the Pens have a lot to prove after losing to the Montreal Canadiens in last season's Stanley Cup playoffs. They also have become arguably the #1 rivalry in the NHL, courtesy of their respective star players and captains--Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
Apparently the NHL and HBO both think they are teams worth watching. They will play in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day, and will be featured in the 12-time Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary miniseries "24/7" leading up to and after the game which will air on NBC. HBO will have unprecedented access to the players in the locker room and off the ice. If you or anyone else is curious about what the life of an NHL hockey player is like and how teams prepare for big games, this HBO miniseries is a must-see.
ETA: October is Hockey Fights Cancer month. Some here might remember Ryan Miller, goalie of the Buffalo Sabres and Team USA at the Vancouver Olympics. Off the ice Miller is an accomplished photographer. Duing the NHL Media Tour in New York City last month, he photographed 5 NHL players for Vanity Fair to showcase the Hockey Fights Cancer tee-shirts and lavendar ties that NHL coaches, broadcasters, and team reps wear throughout October. The story and slideshow are at the highlighted link.
