Will air 2pm(EST) on November 6 on WGN. Twelth episode of Season Five. First aired January 22, 2006.
Written by Charlie Rubin and Rene Balcer. Directed by Alex Chapple.
Guest Actors:
Leslie Hendrix as M.E. Rodgers Brad Renfro as Duane Winslow Ethan Embry as Art Geddens Mike Pniewski as Del Geddens (Mr. Pniewski would return as Chief of Detectives Kenny Moran, the man we all love to hate. He’s a very accomplished, frequently working actor.)
Synopsis: The discovery of a prostitute’s body dropped from the landing gear of a jet leads Logan and Barek to two cousins with a twisted link.
Quotes: Barek: “Art could’ve run, but he came back to help his cousin.” Deakins: “Yea, that’d be touching …If they weren’t serial killers.”
Barek (to Logan): “How do you know all that aeronautical lore? Date a stewardess?”
Deakins: “Upstairs bought it.” Logan: “Great. ‘Cause it’s raining hookers.”
Logan: “Hey, it’s not half bad for a cartoon.”
Barek: “If Art’s dad knew what bullying his son might lead to, he might’ve thought twice about it.” Logan: “You ever wonder why I don’t have kids? Now you know.”
Logan: “We like to have a bake-off between two accomplices. The first one to roll gets the best deal.”
Queries:
What’s the state of the Logan/Barek relationship in this episode?
Why is the episode called WATCH?
Would either Duane or Art have become a killer on his own?
Who’s the worse of the two? How will they do in prison?
Would Duane have killed Barek and Logan? Would he have killed Art? Would he have killed any police officer?
Why didn’t anyone notice Duane working on his apartment?
Would Logan have been happier as a pilot?
Comments: I confess I found this a difficult episode to watch. It’s not particularly graphic, but the brutality of the crimes is pretty awful. It’s now difficult to watch because of Brad Renfro’s death. Such a terrible waste. It’s one of the first Logan/Barek episodes that really seems to have been written for those two detectives rather than being a slightly retooled Goren/Eames story. The story is chilling and remarkably effective.
For your comments and consideration.

I agree that the whole premise of beating someone to death, especially for kicks and for revenge, was a horrible one. One of the worst LOCI has dealt with. I have a hard time watching this episode, but must say that it was well written and the acting by all was excellent.
I thought Barek was great in this episode, especially when she tried to flirt with Brad Renfro, to see how he felt about women. Very astute of her to see that he had some real issues with women.

What’s the state of the Logan/Barek relationship in this episode?
Playful getting to know each other stage?
Why is the episode called WATCH?
The voyeurism involved? I didn't see a double meaning.
Would either Duane or Art have become a killer on his own?
Duane maybe, I think Art needed a leader.
Who’s the worse of the two? How will they do in prison?
I think it was Duane, as he was the architect involved. They will both be pilloried. Would Duane have killed Barek and Logan? Maybe Barek if he got her alone, but I don't really see him having the chops on his own. I could see him having a fight with Art. Maybe a lone cop, but I doubt it even there.
Why didn’t anyone notice Duane working on his apartment?
Because people are stupid. That's how Jeffrey Daumer got away for so long. You're going to confront your neighbor at 5am when you hear loud noises from his apt?
Would Logan have been happier as a pilot?
I think he was just talking from a little boy perspective. Like I want to be a marine biologist but don't have the skill. I am more intrigued by the now you know why I don't have kids line.

Really, Maherjunkie? You wanted to be a marine biologist? Me too, kinda. When I was a little kid i thought it would be fun to ride Shamu for a living!
Now I'm glad my folks talked me out of that.

I was influenced by JAWS. Why did they talk you out of it?

Wait, did JAWS make you want to be a marine biologist, or not want to? I dunno, probably because I'm a bad swimmer.

It made me WANT to, but I have no natural affinity for science, since I couldn't pass algebra it wasn't likely.

Now I'm really curious, never having seen the film myself. What about it made you want to be a marine biologist?

Whoa! You've never watched "Jaws"? I suddenly feel old. By the way, I think it would be way cool to be the police chief on a small island.

Nope, never got around to it, but then I stay away from scary movies in general. I've never watched "The Exorcist" either, and I don't plan on it.

It was when Great White sharks were a total mystery and the sheer ferociousness intrigued me. These days they could sue for defamation of character.
I think you could handle the movie, if you wanted.

These days they could sue for defamation of character. LOL MJ - you've cracked me up. Remember the music when the shark was going to attack? I've watched this film a few times and it can still scare me. Angua, if you decide to watch Jaws, in the words of Seth Brundle "be afraid be very afraid"!

I know this is way OT, but I wanted to thank Angua for spurring that old interest. Because she got me thinking again, I looked into a volunteer project with Great Whites in South Africa, where I have always wanted to go. Now I am going to save my pennies and do so!
