PURGATORY
Will air on Bravo on January 29 at 6am(EST) and January 30 at 2am(EST). Eleventh episode of Season Seven. First aired June 8, 2008.
Written by Siobhan Byrne O’Connor and Warren Leight. Directed by Jesus S. Trevino.
Guest Actors:
Dean Winters as Mike Stoat
Lauren Velez as Lois Melago
Seth Gilliam as Detective Daniels
Holt McCallany as Patrick Copa
Synopsis: Goren goes undercover to try to be reinstated to active duty.
Quotes:
Goren (to Ross): “Why can’t he get someone from OCCB or IA? Why can’t he get someone from SNEU?” Ross: “I went through the whole alphabet with him. He says you’re already inside. He wants you.” Goren: “Yea, he’s hoping I’ll get myself killed.” Ross: “The thought occurred to me.”
Eames: “And then there’s “wrong place, wrong time”” Ross: “You mean the Bennetts? Or do you mean putting a passenger cruise ship terminal in the middle of Red Hook?”
Stoat: “I haven’t seen any innocent people in a long time.”
Stoat (to Goren): “What are you getting for setting me up? Are you getting your shield back? Is that your thirty pieces of silver, Bobby?”
Goren (to Stoat): “I am nothing like you.”
Bobby: Eames. I'm Sorry. Eames: That's all you have to say to me? I could've blown your head off back there. Eight years I've had your back, and I don't even get the courtesy of a phone call. Bobby: I was trying to protect you. Eames: Since when? Bobby: And there were rules that– Eames: Rules. (laughs) You gotta be kidding me. You managed to get word to the captain, you contacted the Chief of Ds, but just not your partner? Bobby: This was my only way back. I mean, how else am I gonna get my shield? You're not gettin' it. Eames: I get it. I get it. You're the genius, and I just carry your water, right? You have any idea how many times I've lied for you, covered your ass? Bobby: I was in a deep hole here. Eames: And who's fault was that? All your wounds are self-inflicted. Bobby: I know, I tried not to drag you into this one. Eames: And what would you have done if I hadn't burst through that door? If it wasn't me, you'd be dead. Bobby: I didn't look for this. Eames: You could've fooled me, Detective. I hope it was worth it. "
Queries:
Why did Stoat pick Bobby? Did Stoat admire Bobby?
Was Stoat ever a good cop?
Did the Chief want Bobby dead? Does he still?
Why does Bobby turn to Ross and not to Alex?
Should Bobby have told Alex? Is there any way he could?
Does Bobby trust Ross?
Ross appears to have been at least an associate of the Chief, but no longer. When did Ross change? Why?
Should Ross have told Alex what was going on with Bobby?
Is Bobby at all like Stoat?
Does Bobby have a drinking problem?
Is Bobby still in therapy at the time of this story?
Did Bobby have any other way of getting his shield back?
Did Bobby take drugs while undercover?
Why didn’t the other cops shoot Bobby?
How long has Bobby been out of contact with Alex? Had he been in touch with her regularly before he went undercover?
Is it possible that Bobby doesn’t know how to respond to Alex’s anger because it’s too much like his mother’s reactions?
Was Alex’s anger at Bobby justified?
Why and how did Alex finally forgive Bobby?
Where did the rat come from?
Comments:
Purgatory? More like a man who’s in hell.
So, 31 pages of original commentary. Do we have anything left to say? Let's find out.
Both Stoat and Copa have families, and both mention them to justify their actions. And both men seem perfectly willing to throw their families away to feed their addictions and wants. I sense that Bobby desperately wants what these two men have, and it’s ironic that they seem to let it go so easily.
Ok, there are plot holes you could drive a truck through—How has Bobby supported himself during this ridiculously long suspension? Have he and Alex been in any kind of contact during his suspension?—and we should certainly discuss them. But I found this an exciting episode, one that I have some trouble watching again because I feel so much for Bobby. People seem to be divided about Alex’s reactions. I think her anger understandable and justified, although it could have just as easily been directed against Ross. Things I want to know—Who put that rat in Bobby’s desk, and are they still around? And when, why, and how did Alex forgive Bobby?
