"Psychotherapy" on the other hand is generally a longer term treatment which focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. Well, they only have eight episodes! ;D Better be the accelerated method! Remember in "Mad Hops" the coach said something like Bobby disrespects authority figures because his father didn't give him much attention? Bobby was fired for insubordination. This would be a likely focus in therapy/counseling. Isn't it fun to guess?

No, it isn't fun to guess. I'm sorry, but the original, sexy, really smart Goren was taken away...a long time ago, replaced with the insecure, long lost family seeking Goren. Damn!!! I want my original Robert Goren back, and soon!!

'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' Gets New CaptainVeteran character actor Jay O. Sanders has been tapped for a major new role on the final season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA. He will play the new captain of the Major Case Squad and boss to Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe). Sanders will appear in all eight episodes of the show's upcoming tenth season. This is the fourth captain on L&O:CI following Jamey Sheridan's Capt. James Deakins, Eric Bogosian's Capt. Danny Ross and, most recently, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's Zoe Callas in Season 9. Sanders, who has rarely done TV, is not new to the L&O franchise. He has guest starred on both L&O:CI and the mothership L&O series. The actor, who has appeared in such movies as The Day After Tomorrow and Revolutionary Road, next co-stars in Green Lantern. www.deadline.com/hollywood/

He's good, but that's gonna be a tough one for me to accept. From hitman to MCS Captain, who says crime doesn't pay?

I always think of him as a bad guy, but I DO like the actor. Yeah, in LOCI, that's where I remember him most but I also caught one of the episodes he was in for the original L&O where he was the bad guy in that too.
I'm happy they got a decent actor, and one I like so I've got no complaints so far. So far so good.

That Mothership epi that Sanders was in is amazing! That's the one where he played that incredibly exacting father. I remember vividly the scene with his wife on the stand (Spencer's wife from Gemini, incidentally) explaining how her daughter had wanted to please her father so much that she learned to tie her shoes in one day. The woman was SO dense...she didn't get that the poor little girl was afraid of her father and that's why she wouldn't give up that day until she tied the perfect bow in her shoelaces. So far, I am quite happy with the casting.

I concur with you OBC. Jay O. Sanders is a very good actor. I am happy to see him back on LOCI. The L&O franchise has always used recurring actors in different roles on their shows, some in which they play good guys and in some they are the villains or the murderer. I cannot count how many times Law & Order and LOCI, as well as SVU have used the same actors in multiple roles. Some examples are the actor in BEST DEFENSE, who played the same character (a prosecutor) on the Mothership. I don’t recall his name or the others like the two in THE UNBLINKING EYE; they each have been in several LOCI episodes -- of course I could look them up. I do remember one, Susan Misner who has also been in several roles on all three shows. Also, I can’t say that I am unhappy about Sanders replacing MEM because, as I previously stated, she is not one of my favorite actors. Some posters on another site agreed with me that she ruined Without A Trace when she was on that show in a two season-long story arc. It will be interesting to see how he handles the “top cop” role.

He was a good "baddie" sp I think he'll make a good "goodie".
Anyway, the blurb states that the new captain has a "good sense of humor", so that fits into the USA channel's "character's welcome - blue skies" formatting ethos.

Even though I'll never forget him as the hitman who put his victim in his freezer along with the Rocky Road ice cream, I think it has been long enough since that episode to open up to him as the Captain. He is an excellent actor, and has tremendous chemistry with both VDO and Erbe.
Still, I would have liked it if MEM had stayed as the Captain.

I think the only character that I've seen Sanders in as a good guy was in Kiss the Girls (movie with Morgan Freeman). He played an FBI agent and I liked him that so I don't think it'll be an issue in LOCI. I'm mostly curious as to how he's going to play his character.

Yeepee!! I'm o.k. with story line and psychologist. And I sincerely hope they stick with here and there clips of the sessions. But according to my experience with TV shows lately I bet you there will be some tension between them ( I'm presuming it is female? ) After a long thought about what bothers me about the psychologist, I finally can say that I don't want Detv. Goren to look like the "emotionally disabled" Monk, but more like a more normal version of Temple Grandin (Thinking in Pictures) or John Nash (A Beautiful Mind). Specifically I don't want detv Goren become "emotionally disabled" when in fact he is an "emotional genius". Grandin and Nash have made their lives by looking at their personalities and have managed to recognize what belonged to their disease and what was healthy mind. I admire them for that, and Detv. Goren seems to be on this road too. I am ok with the psychologist, crossing my fingers so Detv Goren character will be brilliant about his mental health too. I don't care about the therapist sex... but I hope he or she is sharp enough to manage Goren. (Will Eames be involved in any therapy too?)

Regarding Dimarec's query about Eames in therapy, I don't think that her story line would go in that direction since that is the focus of Goren's return. I'm glad you brought this up. I've been thinking about Eames and wondering what season 10 has in store for her. I really really hope that they do right by her this time! I was annoyed that in all the trailers for season 9 it was "Detective Goren this, Detective Robert Goren that, Goren's last episode...." and not a mention of Kathryn Erbe or Detective Eames! And in "Loyalty" part 2, she even got 3rd billing in the opening behind VDO and JG! I just hope she ends up with something good so we can be happy for her too! (Well, you know how I want it to end, but hoping it is just at least open for interpretation! and that Eames gets the recognition she deserves!

Yes, I too get sometimes bored (if not angry) at Eames "the observer" character (despite the fact that I admire her for being a rough cop). I love it when they do team work, and she is the one who knows the facts or she is the one that finds the evidence through hard work. Also I like it when Goren is respectful and listens to what she says, sometimes he even protects her from what is being said. I know this is my unconscious and it is not comedy, but Eames intellect reminded me of Agent 99 from the original Get Smart, she frequently was the one to break the case and her character was unnoticed in every episode (to the point that she didn't get to have a real name). So this brings me to therapy for Eames, her character has been tied up so close to Goren, that I don't know if she is independent. She has to deal with the changes Goren is experiencing and being left out after she has developped some sort of dependency on Goren. Well that is just an option. I hope they give Eames a little more credit in this new season, after all she is Goren's closest work partner.

You've made some good points Dimarec in your interpretation of the Eames' character, especially "the observer".
I would like to see Eames recognized for her own worth not on the coat tails of her partner.

Putting on my helmet and watching for Patcat with the Bat!Just thinking.... We have seen casting calls for the first 2 eps and the role of the new captain has been announced, but we haven't heard a PEEP about Robyn! (Poor pun intended). Could it be that there was such a negative reaction to that storyline that TPTB started to rethink it? Or are they saving that announcement for a BIG SURPRISE? Or they just haven't found the right one yet? My suggestion: a lady in her mid 60's- (Goren is her last big client before she retires)- with a stereotypical grandmotherly disposition! ;D
