Neato!
Don't worry about not getting out Pat, I plan my Sunday nights around Criminal Intent. Many a time I have told someone I was with, "Hey I gotta be in by 8pm! L&O: CI is comming on!"
*grins sheepishly...must learn to trust timer programs on VCR*

I have much experience dealing with people with germ amd other phobias, anxiety disorders, OCD and other psychiatric illnesses. The writers and TS do a wonderful job that is right on point; the show is so funny, without being insulting or demeaning. It is good to be able to laugh at oneself. I know a lot about psychiatric disorders through decades of reading, research and study, and I think that Monk does a better job than CI, frankly. The writers on CI are too smug and conclusory about mental illness and psychiatric conditions. I enjoy Goren's analytical capabilities and explorations of motivations, but I think he packages things too neatly. Life is not guided by psychiatric diagnoses or personality profiles; they are just convenient labels and generalizations. It would be nice if Goren had some ideas but the perp said, "Sorry," I don't fit into that pat theory written in some diagnostic manual or other psychiatric literature." Also, I can't understand why perps always break down and cry or attack Goren and thereby reveal their guilt just because he analyzed their motivation. Sure, he is pushing buttons. However, as a lawyer, I can tell you most defendants (and children and boyfriends) learn the words, "Deny, deny, deny" and "I don't recall." Rarely does anyone feel guilty enough to admit the truth, even to him/herself. Sorry if I am being too harsh. I've had a miserable week at work.

Welcome, bdbrowski, glad to have you! It certainly sounds like an interesting perspective you bring. While I think "Monk" may lapse into silly at certain points, they are never mean-spirited, which I like. I'm with Jimmy Buffett: "If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane, if we weren't all crazy we would go insane".
Hope your week goes better.

Ditto on Catbird's comment... welcome and great perspective Bdbrowski! I do enjoy how Monk's writers bring out the fact that people have issues, some have MAJOR ones. And perps don't always fall neatly between the lines. Its anice break from some of CI's intensity, to see Monk diving heroically to save a fishy, ignoring the bad-guy! *grin* And it would be interesting to see Goren be totally and completely off in his profile, the perp saying , "uh, no... actually thats not me at all..." *snicker* Can't be right all the time... Here's some cyber-sweets for a better weekend Bdbrowski!

You are right, Monk can get too silly, but laughter is the best medicine, and I can have a juvenile sense of humor at times. I particularly am drawn to the comedy of Monk because I recognize so many of those traits in myself or people that I know. (I admit that, like Monk, I hate doorknobs and milk, and love hand sanitizer.) Also, my boyfriend loves Monk and it is the only show he watches religiously, besides sports, so that makes me enjoy Monk even more, to see him laugh with glee (although he somehow noticed my attraction to D'Onofrio and Criminal Intent for years without mentioning it to me and always managed to turn on LOCI for me to watch without me even noticing what he was doing; when I finally admitted it a couple of months ago, he cracked up and asked me why I thought the TV was always tuned to NBC on Sunday nights, and then bent over sideways like Goren and said he just didn't get it.)
I don't mind the intensity of LOCI, at all, but I really dislike how smug and inaccurate the writers are about their supposed knowledge of psychiatric conditions and criminal profiles. I think it feeds into public misconceptions about illness, behavior and the criminal justice system, as well, and that is somewhat irresponsible. I know I am being harsh.
Thank you for your good wishes. I can be a big, whiny crybaby sometimes. Thank God it is Friday.

My fiance watched Monk with me on Sat nights, and he laughes his butt off at Monk's antics. I seriously wonder how many takes they have to go through when Shaloube is going into a Monk germ frenzy! I couldn't keep a straight face, thats for sure. I recently turned my fiance into a CI fan, and he loves the criminal profileing of Goren, but I'd faint of laughter if he ever did the patented "Goren head-tilt" or "Body bend"! He doesn't understand a lot of Goren's idiosyncrasies, and I've tried to explain some of them... he still won't get it. Ah well...

Hi Beth: welcome.
I think that they usually get in the ballpark with the mental and criminal angles. I agree with you that they leave the criminal justice system pretty much alone & that can leave a wrong impression of what is to follow for these bad guys.
Hope you stay around for some new episodes & we can hash out the mental, criminal & justice aspects.

We got Mr. Monk and the Election last night. That's the first Natalie episode I've seen. She's pretty good. How about that Monk re-opening the fridge door and straightening the grenade?! ;D

Mr. Monk and the Kid was on this weekend. Of course, my boyfriend made me turn off my DVD to see it. I only heard part of it before I passed out, but I must say, hearing him frantically scream to the 911 operator about changing a diaper really cracked me up. I mean, No. 3???!!!!
OK, it is really immature, but it tickled my funny bone.
And Mr. Monk and the Election-that was brilliant. His inability to cast the vote or stay in the booth, it was perfect.
Mel, thanks, I too look forward to discussing the future episodes of LOCI with you.

The plot was pretty simple. Couldn't help shouting out at the screen 'he's after the photocopier, you fools'. ;D But, it was a thoroughly enjoyable hour. I LMAO a few times. The voting booth scene was great. Capt. Stottlemeyer holding his jacket open on the roof...in an attempt to shield Monk.

I saw "Mr. Monk and the Kid" last night. I have to admit the previews had me skeptical, I was afraid it'd just be an hour of messy toddler and Monk freaking out but it was so much more than that. What remarkable chracterization for Adrian, I have never been so impressed with something I've seen on TV. The storybook summation, and Monk's recognition that he wasn't ready for a child, had me in tears, and then the ending...I was sobbing like I never had before. (I mentioned elsewhere that I am normally pretty stoic trhough TV, movies, etc.) Even the end credit music was different. A wonderful episode that should definitely be a highlight of Tony Shalhoub's resume, he is absolutely wonderful.
It will be re-run Mon, May 16th at 12:00 AM (I don't know if that's Sunday or Monday night) and Fri May 20th at 1:00 PM, according to the USA website.
And on a happy note, new episodes start Friday July 8th!!

Thank goodness for a new season of MONK--this should keep me very happy until the new season of LOCI.
MR. MONK AND THE OTHER DETECTIVE was very good, although it would have been funnier if Peter Falk had played the other detective. Or Mr. D'Onofio.

I got annoyed that the promos kept hyping "Special Guest Star", ARGH! Still Jason Alexander did decent with the role. Silly but cute touch when Natalie/Julie got Monk to find the remote or whatever to try to make him feel better, and I like the scenes with Dr. Kroger. Still, I'll be glad when they settle into normal Monk episodes.
