Thanks, CR. iPod Mini. Too bad everyone seems to be sold out of all the colours. I didn't really care for the other MP3 players I checked out. Nicky: IPODS and teenagers are both tricky animals. It has to be just the right Ipod otherwise his social life will suffer. (I kid you not) Six months is too old. You might consider letting him pick it out. Funny you should mention letting him pick it out. I just had a telephone conversation with him not too long ago. I phoned to say Happy Birthday and tell him he won't be getting a present tomorrow at his birthday party because what I want to buy him is not available. He says its no problem, no need to rush (I've also been working 7 days a week and haven't had time for real things, like having a life). I told him what I was going for. And yes, he wants to pick it out himself. ;D I must be. I get the best presents! Sirenna, isn't it when you can get off so cheap! It only takes a $2 Matchbox car to light up my little grand-nephews face. He also thinks its cool to throw it on the floor and have his dad bend over and pick it up (over and over and over...)

My aunt who just got married does a lot of travelling for work (when she's not drugging the lab rats she's at presentations and conferences), so we know that whatever her big cool trip of the year was is the source of our Christmas presents. Rome, Paris, Istanbul, just all sorts of little knick-knacks. (She also has a pretty good eye for books, of course in our family the thing gets read before it's actually wrapped.)
Right now I'm going for best babysitter. I don't know that my presents are especially good (usually children's books, occassional stuffed animals), but I play hard with the kids and we have fun. It helps that my favorite babysitter from when I was little set such a good example; almost a big sister, she played and read and would try out all her ideas for the classroom (she's now a 1st grade teacher). My parents figured they paid a good third of her college tuition, considering she babysat from 13 years old til she left for school.

Happy Birthday to all the Juners! I'm so bad with this kind of thing. I used to send out cards like some crazed person, but just got too busy to keep it up. Now my family wonders where "their" card is. I spoiled them.
Cassie-Big time Kudos to you for adopting an older dog. Almost no one will give them a chance. People don't always realize that having a puppy is like having a baby, you just don't go through labor. Its still much work. If I had to train a puppy at this point in my life, it wouldn't stand a chance and neither would I.

I adopted a 1 year old irish setter from the pound - with some training following a book written by the trainer of the dog that did BIG RED for Disney (I forget his name now) .... that was the BEST K-9 I have ever had. Best best best. Did I mention he was the best dog ever?

I've had, and fortunately do have, great cats.
My late, lamented cat Peter (named for a Fred Astaire character and the detective Lord Peter Wimsey) recognized the theme music to the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes TV program. He knew I'd be sitting quietly for an hour and that my lap would be available. He also knew which books I valued more than others and would pull them out of the book shelf (never used his claws, thought) when he was mad at me.
But he also got his head stuck in a Ben and Jerry's ice cream container when he was trying to lick the last bit of ice cream.

In an effort to save cats everywhere, I volunteer to buy up all the Ben & Jerry's ice cream and when the time comes I will carefully dispose of each container, so that no cat has to suffer.

BegToDiffer, that is a positively SAINTLY offer. I am moved. I pledge to help you eradicate this threat to cats everywhere.
Pulled out your favorite books, Patcat? That is so cute. I'm currently being wooed by the next door neighbor's cat who really, really, really wants to live with me. Sadly, Sheba hates her. Since Sheba's 19, (well, in two weeks) and insulin dependent, at this point I don't want to make her life any worse. Plus, she'll make my life a living hell if I try.
We are having the weirdest weather. It's been barely in the high 70's, it rained(!) and as of today, it's supposed to be hitting the 90's. Well, that is more normal, but still.

I have 3 cats. They are like my children! My oldest cat is 10 and hates my husband. I had her before I knew him and she stayed! Thankfully, she never attacks him or spews at him or anything like that. She's such a snob, she just walks away if he talks to her. And she doesn't like anyone but me. LOL! Did anyone see the cat story on EDO's blog? (VDO's sister) I'm sorry but I would have killed that cat on the first day! hehe! I don't like dogs at all, they scare me! I know that sounds really stupid but they do!

Peter also had gaydar. He got very defensive when straight guys came in my apartment, but was downright chummy with gay guys. One of my gay friends wanted to borrow him. "He could save me a lot of embarrassment," he told me.

I think I mentioned my study buddies who curl up beside the computer when I'm in the workroom. THe older calico, Cleo, has gotten more affectionate as she's gotten older: she doesn't want us to rub her, but she very much insists on lying against an arm or leg (or all over the book we're trying to read).
I don't remember Zorro, the cat my famly had when I was born. (I used to chase him around the house, only to have him hop on top of the TV or car and taunt me with his tail.) This cat had character, even my father admitted it. He used to play hockey with an ice cube til it melted. Then when he was a kitten he liked to climb in and out of the beer cases (apparently one time he didn't realize he had grown and got his head stuck in the box), but the kicker was that he loved cantaloupe. A long black cat would come out of the dish with a huge orange smilie-curve in his mouth, Mom still says it was the funniest thing she ever saw.
I know I've been quiet lately, chalk it up to lack of interesting contributions and a very onnery home computer. Plus I've been very tired this week, hopefully I can wake up. Catch y'all later, take care.
