I remember from way back when. Really hilarious stuff. I plan on watching the SNL special and tape Stone Cold, starring Tom Selleck.

Well, I ultimately decided to not confront my roommate. Maybe wimpy, but I realized several key things.
1) Last week I was tired and somewhat allergy ridden, making me cranky. Never a good time for a discussion. 2) Had this girl been just a classmate who'd been so rude, I'd've just ignored her. (Whoa, double contraction. Welcome to the South.) While the situation is somewhat different given that I live with her, I'm not going to screw with it just now. 3) Do I really want to talk to her that much? No. 4) She is not the type to go "Oh my God, I"m so sorry, I had no idea I was coming across that way!" Rather she'd get even more snappish and surly than usual, then start complaining to people that she got stuck with the oversensitive paranoid maniac.
So, I think of it as re-strategizing. If I feel like saying something ("Good morning, how are you?") I will, but I won't force myself. My parents are telling me to, and this is a direct quote, "Just ignore that b*tch in your room!" (It's so much fun and reassuring to have rowdy parents who get indignant on their baby's behalf.)
But whatever. I had a great time at the 40th birthday party last night, got to see all the church choir in their 60s-70s costumes making complete idiots of themselves while I snapped away. I have Van Morrison playing, some Tension Tamer tea, and I plan on thoroughly enjoying the SNL thingy tonight. And instead of dutifully unpacking, I am going to go read through Country Western song titles. So, I am feeling steadier, thanks to all for the support and encouragement.
Later, Catbird

I went to my local video store this past weekend to rent "Ray." All the copies were checked out, so I took a chance on the Cole Porter biopic "De-Lovely."
"De-Lovely" is one of the best looking and sounding movies I have ever seen. As a fan of old movies, and mostly anything dealing with the 20's, 30's, and 40's, this movie is a gem that deserves wider exposure. Kevin Kline captures the complexity of Porter, and Ashley Judd is marvelous as Porter's wife Linda Lee. I don't think any other American composer wrote as many love songs as Porter, but his lyrics are layered with many levels of meaning. If he were alive today, Porter would have excelled at coming up with CI episode titles.
I'm not one to comment on fashion, but Giorgio Armani dressed Kline to the nines in men's attire of the time period. And Judd and the rest of the cast were equally well-dressed to create the appropriate look and feel of Porter's time.
And then there's the Cole Porter music. "De-Lovely" features contemporary recording artists on screen and on the soundtrack interpreting Porter standards. Who can resist Elvis Costello as he croons "Let's Misbehave"? Sheryl Crow must have been thinking of Lance Armstrong's Tour de France victory during her rendition of "Begin the Beguine." And Alanis Morissette's version of "Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love" has just the right jagged little edge.
I give "De-Lovely" an A rating and a very strong recommendation.

Love musicals, stage and screen. Adore Fred Astaire.
Cole Porter is from and buried in Peru, Indiana. Kevin Kline went to Indiana University.

Kevin Kline has to be one of the most under-rated actors out there. He's got talent.

Love musicals, stage and screen. Adore Fred Astaire... Me too. Also Gene Kelly and Bing Crosby. Although, one of my all time favourites is "Meet Me In St. Louis" and has none of the above. Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien are just fabulous in that. Kevin Kline is so great in "A Fish Called Wanda". He'll soon be seen as Dreyfuss in the remake of "The Pink Panther". I guess he'll be taking over Herbert Lom's part as the Chief Inspector.

Nikki, do you get Turner Classic Movies in Canada?
If so, I hope you got to see "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby earlier today, and later tonight "An American in Paris" with Gene Kelly will be on.
"Meet Me in St. Louis" with Judy Garland is going to be on February 28 at 12:15PM Eastern.

Count me in. I love those old musicals too. My dad got me interested in them. It's how he and my mum used to date, I mean, court each other - by going to see those movies. I'm the only person in my group who doesn't mind driving with my dad and hearing his easy-listening radio stations.
I have to say though, hands down, Dean Martin was the best dancer, far better than Fred. Fred's hands were always so floppy when he danced.
There's a resurgence in that style of music now and, mostly it bites. Diana Krall has nothing on Ella Fitzgerald and although Michael Buble is ok, he a sow's ear to Frank!

Unfortunately, Techguy, Turner Movie Classics is not available in Canada. But, fortunately, I have the movies on DVD. Going My Way was two-fer...in a set with Holiday Inn (with both BC and FA ). The Bells of St. Mary, the follow up to Going My Way, is good too...however, BC is outshined by Ingrid Berman. I usually catch the old ones on the CBC or PBS stations. The Detroit PBS station showed Desk Set last Friday evening (thereby, making me miss Third Watch and Medical Investigation as I watched that for the umpteenth time; okay, so no one made me miss them ). Weren't Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn just marvelous!

Hey Sirenna your not the onlyone, the first movies my mom and dad let me have when I was little (other than Disney...lol) were old musicals. I grew up on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Guys and Dolls, Robin and the Seven Hoods, and pretty much anything by Rogers and Hammerstein. (also how I learned to excersise my voice when I was around 5yrs old...getting me ready for singing in competition later in life)
I've just gotten into Turner Classic Movies, and am hoping to see more Bing Crosby since he's got to have one of the smoothest male voices I've ever heard! I'm planning to play old favorites of Dean Martin, Frank and all the other old crooners at my wedding reception this fall.

Diana Krall does her interpretation of "Just One of Those Things" in De-Lovely." And what do you think of her? She actually graduated from the school of music here (UWO) so she's a town favourite. I've seen her in concert twice. I love Jazz but it's slim pickings for live jazz. I must admit I did like her renditon of 'Belissimo, mon amour.' I'm surprised the movie De-Lovely didn't feature songs sung from the era like Ella, Satchmo, Billie Holiday but I guess they wanted to appeal to a modern-day crowd. You should definately rent Ray. It's fabulous and Jamie Foxx is well, wow. He IS Ray. PS who was the lady who sang Che Sera, Sera, whatever will be will be in a Hitchcock movie? She also had a great voice and did many musicals.

I'm planning to play old favorites of Dean Martin, Frank and all the other old crooners at my wedding reception this fall. Hey! You're getting married this fall! Congratulations! Definately include those crooners. They are SO romantic and they seem to make all the guests dance and act with added class. (You can break out the Abba and line/dances later! )

Doris Day sang "Que, Sera, Sera". In The Man Who Knew Too Much, I believe. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials, MelTex.
