I hesitated before joining this board because of bad past experiences. For me joining the Uni-Board was interesting, I thought because people were anonymous they would express themselves in a more honest way. I found out the hard way that it wasn't always the case. Some posters were discussing the shows without ever expressing themselves. I felt a sense of complete detachment that annoyed me because CI is a show that tackles topics that force me to rethink my values and my opinions...it gets me on a personal level. For me watching CI is very visceral. I like or I don't like or it's a combination of both. A CI episode is never tepid and that’s what I like about this show. Another thing that bugged me...a little... was that I sensed a lack of global objectivity from some posters (well, one poster). This was resolved very quickly for me with an explanation from the poster in question. I still wonder if we're watching the same show but it doesn't get under my skin anymore. I'm still hoping to read an analysis from that poster where she will state she totally hated one episode...if it ever happens I will eat my shoe. The only thing I ask and ever asked for since I left the silence majority of CI viewers is honesty. I've been often defined as swimming against the tide and quite frankly I don’t care about that; but being that way comes with its pros and cons. One of the pros being you're always involved in an interesting debate of ideas and one of the cons being people might stigmatize you. I’m not a very tempered person. I'm a red-blooded French...doubled with a red-blooded personality. Now if you would excuse me I will go and yell at...whoever comes my way.

I don't know what specifically prompted the thread either but I'm not surprised to see it. There is a lot of IMO's or "you'll all hate me, but's.." out there.
I don't really understand why people are afraid to have an unpopular opinion. Granted, other sites can be hideous about it, but I don't post there, and don't see why anyone would want to. Plus, who cares what other people's (wrong) opinion is? Mine is the only one that truly counts. And besides, usually there IS someone who agrees with me, in that very thread. Or someone who is agreeing with the person feeling "all alone" so either they're not really reading the boards or they need way too much validation. Not that I'm judging you.
Or you may have information I don't.
I don't mind being swayed, or persuaded, or agree to disagree. I don't consider someone disagreeing with me to be an attack on my character or perceptions. I don't think that everyone who disagrees with me is an idiot, either.
It might be "unexamined opinion". I like to know why sometimes too, especially if it's really out of my realm but there have been times when I've been asked "why do you think/say that?" that I've really had to stop and think, why do I? So often I just make snap judgments, perfectly valid ones even, but don't really think it through the reasoning. Just the result.

The fact is that many boards profess to encourage people to express their opinions but later fry them. One board went so far as to throw out members who did not consistently agree with the majority view. So boards have forgotten that you can appreciate a person's overall body of work and not like certains episodes.

Why do I feel the need to say something now? hehehehehe The bit of "discussing without expressing yourself sounds like what people have said to me before. I think I am this way because I feel the opposite of the way you do about CI. To me, CI is entertainment. I don't take it that seriously. Only one show has ever hit me on a personal level (No Exit)- and I'm still pissed off about it but will not digress again. There are many shows that are tepid to me- many that I don't feel strongly enough about to discuss. (Well, I guess that's evident in my posting history!) Anyway, the ones that I do discuss are the ones I feel are exceptionally good and need to be defended (Death Roe)- or are exceptionally bad and I feel the need to poke at them (Shibboleth). LOL!! I can see good and bad in almost anything! The only thing that truly bothers me about being in the minority is seeing the good or the flaws when no one else seems to. hehehe I am certainly glad this thread came up. I posted my reasons for being skittish in another thread. And I also promised CM no more running for cover posts!

NicoleMarie,
I wasn't referring to you...but then again if the shoe fits!
You said that CI is for you only entertainment. Even so, it didn't stop you from expressing your opinions and your views on numerous episodes. Just the fact that you've questioned yourself about some episodes imply that there is cerebral activity going on when you're watching. If your brain was set at neutral when watching CI, you wouldn't have anything to write about.
I had the same discussion with another poster about the same topic. At that time I thought I was, like you, only watching for entertainment purposes. I still believe that the main reason I watch this show is to get a good 42 minutes of crime drama; but I now know that in order to be good, the most important element a CI episode needs, is to get a reaction out of me.
Yet, discussing and sharing points of view forces me to change how I see things and I need to read the comments with the other poster's view in mind. So even though I don't watch the show with the intention of discussing it on a specific level (either psychologically, sociologically...) if one poster stresses out an interesting element from an episode and if I choose to have that discussion, I have to address the topic on the same level.
And about not taking the show that seriously...because you are taking the time to write about it, one can assume that you are taking it seriously enough.

How can watching the show for entertainment not engender having an opinion on it? That seems paradoxical. After all what else is art for if not for letting us express ourselves?

Just the fact that you've questioned yourself about some episodes imply that there is cerebral activity going on when you're watching. If your brain was set at neutral when watching CI, you wouldn't have anything to write about. Forgive me but, I don't quite understand where you're coming from. CI is entertainment for me yes but why would that stop me from discussing it? The entire premise of message boards is entertainment aren't they? This isn't rocket science or a meeting of the Mensa clubs! LOL!!! I don't "question myself" about CI, I don't know where you get that idea. I question whether or not the storyline makes sense to me. As long as you and I are alive, there will be cerebral activity, whether we are looking for entertainment or whatever in CI. LOL! Not everyone watches CI or posts on message boards for the same reasons. but I now know that in order to be good, the most important element a CI episode needs, is to get a reaction out of me. The only CI show to ever get a "reaction" out of me was "No Exit". What is most important to me is if the storylines make sense. I don't discuss to change points of view or to be swayed from my point of view. To me, that indicates a weakness of character. I like to discuss to find WHY people see shows the way they do. It's interesting to see how other people intrepret these shows, and how they present those intrepretations that interest me so. And about not taking the show that seriously...because you are taking the time to write about it, one can assume that you are taking it seriously enough. That's an overstatement. I discuss for the fun of trading ideas and reading other points of view but, I will not get caught up in the "do or die" attitude that some CI/Vincent fans can have. People like this take these discussions very seriously. I'm a fan but, I'm not a die hard. Basically, I'm just trying to point out the differences in our attitudes about watching CI.

How can watching the show for entertainment not engender having an opinion on it? I have that same question! Everyone's reaction to art is different! ;D

NM - you post often on most episodes & that is, at least for me, what I was asking of the new members - you post your reactions & it is fun for me to read. Sometimes I react the same the way, sometimes I don't & on both occasions I usually post as to why.
I hope all new members will share their reactions to the show - good, bad and indifferent. That makes this board interesting - this board is not what I define as entertainment, but I don't mind if others look at it that way. I define it as a community, new-time coffee house, public square, if you will. But that is just how I use it and look at it.

Well, Mimi, why do I suspect you’re talking about me, here? If you’re not, I’ll be glad to hear it. If you are, I hope you have a pressure-cooker and some salt handy, ‘cause I hear that shoe leather is somewhat tough and tasteless. ;p I take it you’ve never read my rant on the View From Up Here thread. I thoroughly dislike that episode, and will never watch it for pleasure. Because it has the four regulars in it, it could hardly help having a few good moments – Carver quoting the Bible comes to mind – but even those can’t save this episode, in my estimation. So you haven’t hoped in vain.

I'm hoping for a more virulent post than that!

As a newbie, I will take a crack at this one. I was trying to remember my state of mind when I started posting to give me perspective. I have gone through many phases, from just a shy lurker, to joining in a stream of popular consensus, to the first time I actually posted a real thought and not just an emotional knee jerk re-action.
I think because people are so very different and have had different experiences on any board one does need to be very tolerant of these differences. Some people simply may lack self confidence to be candid and risk going against the grain hence the "don't flame" plea.
I remember when I first posted here, I thought it was a very serious board, that frowned on clique sayings, mis-spelling, and oh lord bad use of punctuation. Frankly I was intimidate by it all that I lost my stength of conversational flow and focused too much on proper sentence structure. I tie that up in a bundle known as lack of self confidence and an ego easily bruised.
Now after 4 years of board practice and gaining a feel for different "board flavors" in communication, the circle is complete to relax a bit and just let it flow. One also gets to know the people as they reoccur and you can almost feel the board taking on the personality of its community. I believe that is a natural course of events. I no longer flinch at a difference of opinion or withdraw because of a concern of a clique atmosphere. All that fades with experience and a gain in confidence that ones words are weighed differently.
What I do try to do without a big fuss, is to be open, friendly, and tolerant of people new to any board, simply because I remember what that feels like. It can at times be painful when you do not stand firmly in your own skin. The first time I was here I was easily hurt because - let's face it, a board cannot relay the context or emotions the statement was made in. Words without emotional gestures of a face to face to analyize tone and intent, can be all to easily mis-judged.
