Is anyone else bowled over with football? Actually I'm a bit ticked off that the NFL has usurped the traditional New Year's Day college bowl games, bumping the biggies to Monday while they show meaningless NFL games today. Bummer.
Call me a traditionalist, but the Rose Bowl parade and game belongs on January 1, not the surrogate Monday after a Sunday holiday.
Nevertheless, Happy New Year everyone.

I was wondering what was going on, thought I just missed the parade .... I watched my Steelers win - they will be in the playoffs! Yeah! But really, I think the Rose bowl and all the bowl games should ALWAYS be on the 1st. I'm a bit old fashioned and like a good tradition. There would be nothing wrong with having them play on Monday OR just have a whole week off and resume games on the next Sunday.
as you say, nevertheless - HAPPY NEW YEAR

I understand that the Rose Parade is in danger of being postponed because of the storms hitting California.
And it's been a strange New Year's Day--it just doesn't seem real because of the lack of the parades and football, although the LOCI marathon on Saturday and the mini-marathon of Bravo and NBC has been highly enjoyable.

Yes there were some meaningful games NFL games on Sunday to determine wild card teams, such as the Steelers. However, I could have done without the 49ers/Texans game.
Thankfully I have the day off today so I can catch all or at least part of 6 bowls. And the Tournament of Roses parade is still scheduled for today, Monday January 2 at 8AM PT, IF the weather cooperates.
But...the Orange Bowl won't be played until tomorrow (Tuesday January 3), and the Rose Bowl National Championship game between USC and Texas is on Wednesday January 4! What's up with this madness?
Oh, I forgot. TV scheduling honchos make the rules and dictate what games will be played when.

I don't watch them & still don't like it - don't mess with a good tradition! Wed college game?! geez, I can't stand to watch taped games - takes all the excitment out for me - I would hate to have to tape something while I was in class or work and then have to watch it later. humbug

My understanding is the Orange Bowl tonight and the Rose Bowl tomorrow night will be on LIVE, not tape delayed, at 8PM ET.

Well, the Panthers are in the playoffs. I'm not a huge fan, but local Carolina and all that. Besides, my brother is intense and keeps the games playing in the house. I'm just waiting for the round ball. I am all about the ACC. Besides, Carolina/State play Saturday afternoon, and being the product of a mixed marriage things are always lively in our house.
Sigh. Lugged my cat to the vet today, the ulcer on Emma's eye has spread to cover practically the entire surface. (I am still shoving pills down Cleo's throat twice a day, since she has hyperthyroidism.) Break and the holidays have not been the greatest; family tensions that I don't want to get into. I don't want to go back to school--I haven't enjoyed my vacation--but I'm getting tired and annoyed with the fact that it doesn't feel like home. I leave Sunday, classes start next week. Hopefully I'll do better once I get a routine and stuff, it looks like good classes for the Spring.
Sorry to dump, just felt kinda blah. Hope everyone had a nice fun New Year and various celebrations of Christmahannukwanzakuh and whatnot.
Take care all, Catbird

...TV scheduling honchos make the rules and dictate what games will be played when. ( Apparently this was the case in Vancouver according to news reports this past Monday. There were more than a few 'displeased' people who came here to see Team USA in the World Junior Championships, but there was last minute schedule changes, courtesy of TSN. Go Team Canada! Happy New Year!!

Back at school. Classes start tomorrow, at which time I have to go to the bookstore--stupid campus overpricing--and give up eatin' money. I had enough mess to lug back without fighting the TV, so no "Criminal Intent" or "Daily Show/Colbert Report" for me this week. Le sigh, but I can catch Comedy Central on the website and CI reruns. (Yes I took the TV home, because of the built-in VCR which, unlike the unit at home, can actually record off TV. We needed it for Christmas specials and the like.) I need to not be an addict, and I'm sure my roommate is glad for the relief.
Yay Panthers! And they didn't think we could pull it off...(actually the big game this weekend was Carolina/State, the ACC is alive and kicking!) Oh well, next weekend ought to be fun.

Sigh ... it's been a while since I've had time to post, and still so many posts I want to respond to and can't right now! I just wanted to get a quick hello out there to everyone, and also let you know that I've heard from Rom. He's also been very busy and hasn't been able to post, but he had a nice holiday and is currently enjoying some very warm weather. Catbird, I have been regularly missing TDS and CR for the past few weeks I'll have to jump on Comedy Centrals site and catch up. Any clips I should definitely see?

I understand the busy bee thing. I'm heading back to work after already being at the bloody place all day today, in about half an hour and will probably get home around 1am tonight. (thank god for the Law and order mothership re-runs on Bravo at that time of night!) PS. We almost got a ten week old black lab retreiver about a week ago but said no. The time isn't right. I watched my cube mate head off for an all expenses trip to the Dominican today. She was the best worker bee in the department! My only consolation is that she's been told to expect to attend business meetings the whole time she's there. She's said she will be and, apparently the dress code says she can go in her bikini (with cover up) I know her coverups are a mere footnote because she just doesn' give a (* @@!! Which explains why she beat everyone else, including the jocks and type A personalities, in my profession. Not that she walks around in a bikini at work. She completely profession but that she got tons of confidence. Even the jocks doubt themselves once in a while. .. I would love to attend a biz meeting in my bikini! I just don't quite dare. I mean what if I set back women's rights by a decade. How could I live with myself?!

Trisha, Thanks for the message from Rom. We all hope he's doing well.
As to "The Daily Show": see the interviews with Jimmy Carter, George Packer and James Risen. The last two are reporters/ authors with new books out, and Jon Stewart was gushing all over "The Assasin's Gate" by George Packer. Risen is the reporter who broke the story about the wire taps, it's a very good interview. "This is Wire Tap" and "Coca" have a couple funny moments but did not merit the O-my-gosh-you-have-to-see-this that I wind up forcing down my parents.
"The Colbert Report": most of the WORDS were pretty good, especially "Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay" (The Catholic Church banning homosexuals from the priesthood) and "Hell, No!" (Venezuela providing heating oil for poor families in the northeast, the bullet points were spot on fantastic in that one.) While some were better than others, off the top of my head I can't think of any duds so set yourself some time to watch. Richard Clarke, Tim Robbins, and in spots Anderson Cooper were good interviews. So were Bob Costas (great sense of humor) and Katrina Van den Heuvel, but for some reason those aren't on the website. Slightly older "On Notice" was his Glaring Omission, which I talked about for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame set.

HA! bikini meetings would make me shudder. oh, well.
I think a lab would not have been good for you; they were bred as field/working dogs and that means they have A LOT OF ENERGY and would expect 2 hours romps each day. If they didn't get it, they may begin eating the house just for entertainment.

Ok! That settles it. Dog it is. Just kidding, Metella and Observer! I'm happy waiting and this wasn't the dog for me. You know you know when you're MFEO. The-scheduling -time-for-walks-thing wasn't what decided against for me. I walk a lot and I've consciously decided not to own a car) There were other factors, not least of which my mother wanted to own it jointly with me and we already argue about the tidbits she and my dad feed the cat. HE's is waay too fat! It was more that he wasn't meant to be my dog. I could just feel it. Mine's still out there somewhere.
