I used to love his crass way of speaking - he was telling what was on his mind without pc'ness I laugh again as... I don't consider opposing opinions as subordinate to mine. Equal doesn't mean carbon copy. I have changed my opinions about many things and in further homage to this board and the members, it is some of you who speak up with a differing opinion that have changed my outlook on some issues. this is why I come back here again and again.

Thanks for your insights, Matella. Didn't mean to intrude... sorry if it was an inconvenience.

Naw, gave me a chance to vent, eh?
anyway - I still really like most of his flicks; but I think anyone who ends up with so much on the plus side has even less excuse to act badly; and so often with celebs it goes the other way around.
Say - to get back to positive rumors .... Mini Driver is a "green" actress! Go girl - save a tree.

You're not alone, Metella. I'm a HUGE fan of Criminal Intent, but not as huge a fan of VDO. I recognize that he's a good actor, but he's never been the only reason I watch the show. What I adore is the character of Goren, but I don't necessarily think VDO's the only one who could've brought Goren to life in an interesting, irresistible way. I think the character is so amazingly well imagined, so quirky and wounded and intelligent, that there are others who could have done him justice in a way that would've drawn me to the show. Yes, VDO gives a voice and body to the character. And I'm the first to say he does a great job of it. But, when the show first started airing, there were some rumors about other actors that were considered for the role. Actors like Liev Schrieber, who's also terrific and Adam Arkin, another chameleon and Mandy Patinkin, also great. It wouldn't be VDO's Goren, but it would be Goren. And Goren is very specific, very three-dimensional, very alive. A detective for the ages, kind of like his inspiration, Sherlock Holmes, who's been satisfyingly portrayed by numerous actors. As for what VDO is like personally, I don't know and don't care. I kind of cringe when fans tend to blur the distinction between Goren and VDO, or take publicity interviews as any sort of real insight into his personality. I'd rather not go there.

See for me it's just the opposite where Goren is concerned. I remember the first episode I saw was one in season two. You know the one where Goren is in the final interview with the criminal and he mocks the guys 'stature' I was mezmerized. It was powerful and provokative and wierd and interesting and, well, wonderous really that it was on TV and not in some experimental theatre thingy. I was channel flipping and had never heard LO:ci and after flipping and staying on that show, I made it a point to buy, yes buy a TV Guide to find out what the program was and then to make a point of being home on Sunday nights. This was when I was a student about three years ago. I have never done that before. Suited my life around the TV, I mean and it was definately because of the Goren character and, yes, Vincent's portrayal of him. I know it was because I sought out his movies after that to see more of what he does. Before this show I didn't know who he was. Ironically though, after I got to know his roles I realized how many things I had seen him in that I never knew was him. He was so morphical (I know that isn't a word but how else would you describe him?!) and yet so recognizable at the same time. I really don't think anyone else could play Goren but then I think Basil was the greatest and the definitive Sherlock. (Jeremy Brett was ok but not as dark and complicated. I think he was kind of forced by direction to appear as if he were but I was never fooled. He seemed play it too humourously.) Just like no-one but no-one could play Columbo like Peter Falk! So for me this is a Goren/Vincent partnership.

I agree, Sirenna. As great as Schrieber, Arkin, and Patinkin are, they wouldn't be the Goren that most of us have come to know and love. And I agree about the immortal Columbo - NO ONE besides Peter Falk should ever play that role.

Bing Crosby was considered for the role of Columbo.

Yes, No one but Peter should ever be allowed to step into Columbo's shoes, I agree.

Just meant that the character is so strong that he could've been brought to life and been fascinating by just more than a single actor. But now that VDO has done the job, I don't think the role could be recast. Goren isn't as much of an icon as Sherlock Holmes.

Nah I dont think the role of Goren could be recast either, the end of Vincent on the show would be the end of Goren & sad as it would be, it just wouldn't seem right to cast someone else. Who could they find to fit into Vincent's size 13's anyway? lol

"Eva Longoria — who plays a Secret Service agent — is as comfortable wielding a gun as Paris Hilton is cradling a miniature poodle.
Longoria’s marksmanship came much to the dismay of Michael Douglas
“It was humiliating, to be honest,” says the 61-year-old Oscar winner of being outgunned by the 5-ft.-2 rookie.
“She shoots better than 90 percent of police officers in our country. She grew up on a ranch in San Antonio. Her dad had her shooting target practice when she was six years old.”
Regardless of your feelings on guns, if you're going to wield one, you may as well be an excellent shot.
But now I'm scared of 90% of police officers in this country.
