Spring is here, hooray! Nice 70s-type weather down in Carolina, we'll see how long that lasts.
This next week I only have one day off. The school choir is performing with the local symphony, Beethoven's 9th (the finale) and Bruckner's "Te Deum" which I like. Unfortunately we have had precious little rehearsal time. Anyways, tonight through Wednesday are rehearsals, performance Thurs/Sat. Busy busy busy--it'll be a miracle if 1) I have any voice left and 2)can remember my name by the end of it all. Let's hear it for the choir geeks--and count it as warming up for our own The Chorus.
And now I have to run get dinner before the madness begins. Later all, take care!

PS: Sat 4-8-06 Just finished the last symphony performance. We could have used a bit more rehearsal time--we flubbed a couple entrances in "Te Deum"--but otherwise it went well. The audience, at least, loved it. When the Maestro gestured for the Chorus to stand and be recognized, on both nights we got cheers and whistles, such a rush!!! Sorry, adrenaline. Thankfully we get to order a CD. Unfortunately I am sick, ugh, but at least my vocal cords held out through tonight. Yay altos! Yay fight-song Bruckner and Beethoven that makes me feel like I've accomplished something!

It's rainy, but warm here. My grass is really green, my tulips are about a week away from blooming (and I have a lot of them as they're my fave ) It officially feels like spring. So, happy spring everyone! And happy birthday to Maherjunkie, Comedykicks, and all you other April babies!

Go choir geeks! You know, when I was a kid/teen I was always involved in chorus and theater...somewhere in the process of "growing up" I left it behind. The past couple of years I've really been thinking about getting back to it, as an adult this time. Catbird, I really enjoy hearing about your chorus adventures The weather here is beautiful too...mid-50's and sunny. And the logging that's been going on over on a nearby piece of forestland is finally finished up. That was a major stressor the past few weeks. I've just been spinning yarn like crazy and contemplating how far behind I am on any potential veggie gardening. It's time to clean the chicken coop and the goat barn, and if I don't get the last fiber sheared off the goats soon it'll matt up and just be unusable. The chores never end on my little homestead, but as long as the sun is out I try to keep my grumbling to a minimum.

My tulips are peeping up, but we are having a drought right now - so they are behind.
I also planted organic, heritage sunflowers in a bowl inside - they came up ... but now are tall and spindly and falling over & they have to stay inside for another few weeks.
Anyone have any tip on making them strong sunflowers instead of creeping along the ground?

Matella>> My Mom, who has the biggest green thumb in the world (and that I, unfortunately, did not inherit), ties her sunflowers to stakes so they will have a little support. Hope that helps! Here in Nashville, hockey rules the night right now. The Preds are on a roll !! Hubby and I have seen five games in the last couple of weeks - one in his hometown of St. Louis, where they retired Al MacInnis' number. And now my beloved Cardinals have kicked off the season. Baseball, hockey, VDO/CI, and "X-Men III" in May - my summer is already looking up!!! Best Wishes to all the April babies and also to all the members of the board that have welcomed rookies like myself. You guys are great caseyswife

Ah, stakes, that could work for me - when I plop them in the ground - they get a stake tied around them - that could go along with "my throw em in and water em I don't have time" method of gardening

Yes, stakes work for sunflowers. Also for some reason growing them in bunches seems to keep them all pretty straight as they grow together - maybe it's a pride thing and not being the only one in the flowerbox tarred with the nickname droopy!
JanetCatbird: Q: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? A: Practise, practise, practise!
Wow. You guys must be good.

Ah sunflowers...they can be such a pain when they get all floppy. I've found if I grow them indoors and they get spindly (they don't tend to do that if planted directly outdoors) you can just plant them extra deep, much like you would tomato seedlings. Just go ahead and plant a lot of the spindly stalk in the ground...in the long run it's great for the sunflower and strengthens it because that portion of stalk that goes underground will develop roots and add to a stronger root system.

I am have excellent luck with bulbs and trees; but my sunflowers were .... (pun intended) a real flop last year.

You're so lucky to have a garden. I have the shore of a lake but it is communal, darn it.

I'd rather have a communal lake shore than my gardens anyday! I think I'm going to have to come visit you this summer

Hope everybody had a nice Easter/Passover--or, as the university refers to the day off, "Spring Holiday". I was home for a long weekend, church services, good family time, chance to play with my buddies who I babysit.
I now have a major paper due Friday, haven't touched the sources. And Thursday night is an induction ceremony for an honor society, which I think my parents are coming up for. The next couple of days are going to be hell--actually, the next couple weeks with exams and all. Either I will be posting a lot more than usual on the board to procrastinate/catch some fresh air or I will disappear, we'll see how it goes. Later all, take care.

PS: Being home with family explains missing "Vacancy" on Sunday. But when I told my parents about Rogers and Lennie in "Dramma Giocoso" they did simultaneous jaw-drops of delight. I think that'll be one CI episode they'll sit through once I tape the rerun.
