www6.comcast.net/news/articles/national/2008/02/14/Candy.Blade/WTF??!!! Why isn't the FDA cracking down on their asses? I mean, shit, it's been how many years since the last "mad cow" incident and Canadian beef is still suspect, but the Chinese can send us toys covered in lead, poisoned dog food, and now candy with razor blades and staples in it?? Gee, could it be that our gov. does NOTHING because China is financing our enormous defict?

Until our govt. gets out of bed with foreign govts. this will continue to happen. Our govt. is more than happy to sacrifice our safety for $$. There can be no other reason. On the home front, the companies that import chinese goods/foods need to be fined and taken to court for allowing these products to go on their shelves without a thought as to their safety. The CEOs need to spend some time in jail. We cannot continue to import products from china because they have been proven time and time again to be hazardous and deadly. It makes you wonder how much we have used or eaten that has not been caught. I blame our own govt. for this problem. They are supposed to keep us safe and they have failed miserably at doing that. Instead of financing all these pork projects, use that money to enlarge the inspection facilities at our ports. We don't need a bridge to nowhere....we need to insure the products coming into this country pose no hazard to our citizens.

The staple & the razor piece baked into the lollipop - it sounds deliberate. Like some sicko in China who works at the factory wants to hurt American kids. He/she probably hates our country because they have to work like dogs for peanuts to provide us fat Americans junk food.

In some cases the chinese govt. uses prison inmates as slave labor in plants. They receive nothing for their work. I am afraid that our govt. has given the chinese govt. the noose to hang us with. Our govt. gave them our jobs, our govt. gave them our financial control, our govt. gave them access to our military secrets, our govt. gave them free access to our ports, our govt. gave them lopsided trade deals, our govt. gave them our safety, our govt. gave them our country. I am ashamed of our government. I believe they are traitors.

The chinese factories that export their tainted products to this country shouldn't worry about one sicko. They have entire factories manufacturing poison for us to consume. The metal in lollipops is small potatoes compared to tons of food and goods that have deadly contaminents put in them. Not trying to trivialize the metal in the candy.......every piece of contaminated product is a problem for us.

I think I may have said this on the board before, so forgive me if it sounds like a broken record....... but in my studies I read an interview of an Exxon top 5 ..... Exxon is now global, this guy "is" american ..... he said that if a choice came down to the good of Exxon or the good of americans, he would make his decision for Exxon.
Now where is mind-set coming from? From people already so fricking rich, how can it matter if they are fired? Are they so bound to the other people in "their social circle" that to leave it would be like death? Have they totally replaced their souls for the level of their net worth?
I have begun, after the pet food incident, to read the packaging and NOT buy any chews for my dogs that come from China. The problem is, there is no guarantee that I have complete truth in my labeling.
I haven't thought on this long - so if any of you have an action plan - clue me in and I'll be part of the movement.

Metella----unfortunately the labels on the pet foods read Made in USA. The ingredients were the problem. The gluten was the culprit. Imported from China it was poison. To falsely boost the protein content reading, they added the chemicals to make it look like the protein content was good. Instead it sickened and killed thousands of dogs and cats. When this first came to light, I emailed Purina Pet Foods from a link at their website. I was so angry because in their FAQs pertaining to the tainted gluten they stated they would still be getting their gluten from China because the American supply of gluten is not enough. Transalation--we don't give a shit about your pets, we will continue to import the poison from China because all we care about is the almighty dollar. They may have changed it by now but that's the way it read months ago.

Little history lesson---
Back in the 70s I was a vet tech. I remember when the Science Diet brand was the hot item. They came out with not only the regular pet food but the prescription diets as well. One of the most popular types of their line was Feline CD. This is a food that is used for cats that have urinary tract problems. And it did work. Someone at the company decided to remove taurine from the ingredients that went into the CD. One less ingredient, less to manufacture and bigger bottom line. They didn't tell the consumers that the taurine was missing. It wasn't until the missing ingredient was having a detrimental effect on the cats that were on the diet that they quietly resumed adding taurine back into the food. Lesson to be learned.......business in this country doesn't care about the consumer or the problems their greed causes. They would kill you if it meant a bigger bottom line. In fact, they have. We just don't know it yet. So because a product is made in the USA don't feel too safe. It has foreign ingredients in it and it is sold to us by unscrupulous companies who don't care about anything but a bigger profit.

One more hop up on the soap box......
Many years ago I can remember telling clients not to give their dogs the rawhide chews that were made in China. Back then we were aware that the foreign chews made pets sick. Nothing ever came of it. This was before the internet so information was not as available as it is now.
Either that or no one really cared.......

If you really want to scare yourself, look up the Chinese government-Clinton/Gore/DNC fundraising scandals. You can find some info on Wikipedia under "1996 United States campaign finance controversy" to start with.
And at least one of the people investigated in the past is now suspected of raising funds from "recent Chinese immigrants" for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

ah - more reason to never vote for a clinton.
I know there are small operations all over the country - but buying from a very small operation often gets you quality products (and a much higher price for a basic item) of course, that can go very bad also - so you have to almost know the owner's philosophy to make sure they are passionate about their product and not their bank balance.
Disheartening. Anyone know a good pet food brand? Good chews?

Presently feeding Iams to the lhasa and Eukenuba to the puppy.
And keeping my fingers crossed........
The problem is that even with it being only the one ingredient that is tainted, the pet food manufacturers here share the same suppliers. The biggies, Purina, Hills etc. all used the same gluten. It will happen again, greed will out over ethics.

nwchimom, that's an interesting article about China's manuvering into US politics on wiki. There are further articles that show that they started doing it in 1979 and throughout GHW Bush's term as well. They're certainly a country with an eye on the future. What I find most interesting about it is, 1) Bob Woodward had a hand in alerting the public to the PRC's illegal lobbying. Gee, wonder how he knew to look .... And 2.) Bill Clinton admitted and apologized for the inappropriate nature of the donations and Trie's visit to the White House, and the money given to the DNC was returned. Never, never, never will we get that from a Bushie. Also, of interest, The New China Lobby's association with former United States Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, Cyrus Vance, Lawrence Eagleburger, Alexander Haig, and Brent Scowcroft ... What a list!!! With the exception of Vance, all republican's, I think, and going right back to Nixon. What a shocker [/snark] The MOST infuriating thing about it is how much the PRC has gotten away with under THIS administration. We KNOW that the PRC still have their hands in the cookie jar, or something would have been done to stop them from artificially keeping down the value of the Yuan, flooding our market with products priced to put US companies out of business, and little to no health and safty standards. I don't blame this on Clinton, and certainly not on his wife. There were checks and balances put into the trade agreement the Clinton administration drafted. The fact of the matter is that Bush has done NOTHING to see that they're held up, but he has taken taken trillions in Yuan to finance a war that his buddies are profiting from and tax cuts his buddies are bennefiting from.
