Many families in my area are actually talking about choosing between food and heat ! and they are not scummy lazy people; but people who want to work & who will work - but if they work 9 hours a day - then they should make enough to eat and pay the light and heat ! They are not asking for new cars & updated homes - just the basics & they can't get it now.
Very sad. I don't wish bad on the Chinese and Indian middle-classes & lower classes .... but each country should be held up to safety and health standards and basic working conditions - then the labor costs would be more equal and things should balance out. Very distressing when our rich are even more rich ..... and the 8 mil diamond ring could have been 8 mil for a decent community program.

As long as our govt. doesn't take a stand on the chinese imports the substandard work conditions in that country will continue. They have no problem exploiting their people. I think our govt. has blended our economy with theirs to the point that pissing off the chinese is not an option. We borrow money from them, egad how dumb is that. They have become the "company store" and we are the coal miners. Thank you US govt. you have sold us out.

Just a few questions..... Is anyone surprised at this? Will the govt. put an end to dangerous imports? Will American companies wise up and use only made in USA products? If anyone can answer yes to just one of these questions, I have some swampland in Florida you might be interested in........

I'm not surprise, just keeping score.

I'm not at all surprised; keeping score is pointless. US companies are willing to risk lawsuits because, in the long term, it costs less to use cheap Chinese labor and settle any ensuing lawsuits from dangerous/toxic products than it would to have the products made safely in this country. And just like with the health insurance industry, politicians get donations and other payoffs from the businesses, so they have little incentive to aggressively investigate or restrict Chinese made products.

Thanks for the heads up on this, Trisha. Like "Smile," I can see this being used in a future episode of either LOCI or the mothership.

My cousin sent me an email (a long time back) and I wish I had the link still. They had made some very dangerous (and sick) headbands. Looked pretty normal on the outside but once you cut into it, the elastic inside the covering was none other than used condoms. Hey, it's great to recycle but something you just shouldn't reuse. Gross!

That's revolting, but not all that surprising. People who knowingly feed babies poison to turn a profit are capable of anything.
