Sounds good - but I want to participate as I have very little knowledge of B&W - so I don't have a list. I'll take what you all give me.

Some Like it Hot Arsenic and Old Lace Sirenna, we did SLIH last year. And I would classify "Arsenic and Old Lace" as a comedy and we're trying for a different genre this time. Do you have two alternate choices to complete your five picks? BTW, here's my list in alphabetical order:All About Eve Casablanca In Cold Blood On the Waterfront To Kill a Mockingbird

Sirenna, you're right on with your revised list.
Based on the input so far, the leading candidates to make the final cut of five are All About Eve, Casablanca, On the Waterfront, and To Kill a Mockingbird . Let's hear from anyone else who wants to make suggestions before the five finalists are put to a vote.

Okay, my list:
A Face in the Crowd (Elia Kazan) Manhattan (Woody Allen) Down By Law (Jim Jarmusch directs, Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni -- before he was Robert Benigni)
and my last two: well, while both are readily available to rent, they're also subtitled, and maybe that's a turn-off. But, what the hell, I'll throw 'em out there anyway:
The Grand Illusion by Renoir (Jean, son of Auguste. A great companion piece to Welles' Citizen Kane)
Fellini's 8 1/2 (I've never seen it, but would love an excuse!! Supposedly the first great film about film, and the inspiration for Woody Allen's Stardust Memories. All that plus Marcello Mastroianni -- yum.)
Okay, that's all! Thanks for organizing this, Techguy!

Manhattan (Woody Allen)
Thanks for organizing this, Techguy!
Good choices LOCIfan, but I think "Manhattan" is more comedy than drama. Do you have an alternate choice to round out your five picks? Also, I'm hoping to include at least one choice from each participant's list so everyone is included. I'm hoping someone else will pick something from your list to give us a fifth finalist.
And thanks to you too for your suggestions.
ETA: Metella, are you sure you don't want in on the action? Are you at least going to vote when we have the five finalists? Your input is also most welcome.

Oh, yes, you're right Techguy. Okay, how about if I replace Manhattan with:
In a Lonely Place: Again, this is a film I've never seen, but would love to have an excuse to see. It's in the film noir genre, stars Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. It might hold relevance to this board because the plot centers around a mystery writer (along the lines of Dashiell Hammet), who's become a Hollywood screenwriter. A murder ensues which ensnares the mystery writer and -- of course -- a beautiful neighbor. It's often touted as one of Bogart's best performances, and a prime example of the film noir genre. The mere fact that Bogart's character's name is Dixon Steele has always made me want to see it!
I know it's readily available on DVD, so maybe that could be my fifth pick.

Movies I've seen and would love a discussion on: - Casablanca: Not my absolute favorite movie, but I do enjoy it. Great lines, you gotta know it for cultural references. Same can also be said for Maltese Falcon. So that's a two-way tie.
- M: Germany just coming into talkies, Peter Lorre plays a child-murderer who is put on trial in a kangaroo court by the criminals and underground of Berlin. Bits of it drag, but the performers are amazing. Lorre will tear your heart out. Although it's well-known and respected, I don't recall ever looking for it in the video places so I can't comment about availability. (And I'm the one who whined about that issue! Sorry!)
- 3:10 to Yuma: It's a Western, sure, but some terrific acting from Van Heflin and Glenn Ford. Very intense psychological confrontations.
- Laugh, Clown, Laugh: Silent, sad, well-acted drama about love and various connections. Actually I'm game for anything with Lon Chaney.
- On the Waterfront: Some solid performances, outbreak of WWII and people coping with various complications in life. I've never read the book it's based on. And it airs on TCM this weekend!
Personally I can pass on To Kill A Mockingbird, it is a good movie but just not a favorite. Read the book! Sorry. Streetcar would be alright, but not my first choice. Of course I'll go with whatever the vote is. Georgy Girl and Act of Violence are both amazing but I don't think they're standard Blockbuster stock. A shame we're not doing color drama films this time around, because Ordinary People is just phenomenal. As to movies I haven't seen, but would be interested in: All About Eve, On the Waterfront, Dr. Strangelove, Jezebel. --Catbird

I like the movie but I've seen Casablanca so many times. I was sort of hoping to use this to see a movie not quite as familiar with. I like the element of surprise.
On the Waterfront is coming up regularly plus I can rent it at my local library...

OK, here's where we're at and the plan of action.
So far we still have as the top four contenders All About Eve, Casablanca, On the Waterfront, and To Kill a Mockingbird. To give LOCIfan a say in the final choice, I'm going to add her top choice A Face in the Crowd unless someone else speaks up and submits another title. I'll leave options open until the close of the Memorial Day weekend. Another CI marathon is coming up on USA on the holiday, so I'm allowing some time for everyone to get the Season 2 reruns out of their system. If there are no new submissions by 5/29, or if nothing else changes in terms of the most popular picks, I'll post a poll with the five finalists for interested participants to vote on.
If anyone has anything else to add, now is the time!

If anyone has anything else to add, now is the time! Ah, you're sweet Techguy! You sure don't have to do that. But, if you are going to give me a wild card spot, could I switch it for IN A LONELY PLACE? If not, I'm cool with A FACE IN THE CROWD. Basically, my preference is for a film I haven't seen before and I've seen ALL ABOUT EVE, CASABLANCA, ON THE WATERFRONT & TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD many times. I've only seen A FACE IN THE CROWD once, and that was several years ago, so I'd be interested to rediscover it. But I'd be even more interesting in watching something for the first time. But that's only my preference. I'm a big-time movie buff, so whatever the final outcome, I'll watch and be interested to engage in the dialogue we have about it. If I'm being difficult feel free to tell me to just hush my mouth!
