You know, we've got a lot of threads for individual movies, but I thought it might be nice to have a little place for whatever you've watched recently. It may or may not be new, or maybe it just doesn't deserve it's own thread. Or maybe it was wretched and you want to warn others.
Here you go! What have you rented lately?
Children of Men - Quite good if you're into dystopic apocalyptic stuff. Great cast and interesting ideas throughout. I found the ending a little too open-ended for my full enjoyment, but I would still definitely recommend it. Michael Caine is fantastic as a future aging hippie.
This Filthy World - The one man show of John Waters, and it's fantastic. I adore John Waters, and what really comes through when he tells his wild tales is that he seems like an incredibly kind, warm, and open minded person who just happens to have a fabulously bent sense of humor. I could listen to his stories for hours on end, so it's nice to get a movie-length chunk of him just storytelling and shooting the breeze.

The past week I've gone insane and been on a Christopher Plummer binge; I’ve seen 8 of his movies two of which I've already seen before.
Murder by Decree – 1979 Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes solves the Jack the Ripper killings. Review: Anybody seen “From Hell” with Johnny Depp? Same plot. Geneviève Bujold was totally unneeded and kind of annoying. Chris plays Holmes.
Inside Man – 2006 Synopsis: Clive Owen performs the perfect bank heist. Review: Fantastic Film. I highly recommend this one. When I first saw the trailer for this film, It peaked my interest and later when I found out Christopher Plummer was in it I just had to see it. I don’t quite understand the music video shots in this one or felt Foster wasn’t really needed for the film. Love the little scene at the end w/Foster and Plummer!
Nicholas Nickleby – 2002 Synopsis: Nicholas loses his father and becomes head of the family with no money or job the family travel to Chris Plummer (Nicky's Uncle) who's very rich and a bank owner for help. He sends Nicky to become a teacher at a boarding school for boys. The boarding school is dilapidated house where the head master beats the children who are out of line. Nicky escapes with a long time resident and has to make it back to his Uncle's before his sister's virtue is compromised. Review:Chris plays a delightfully delicious bad guy (like he does in 85% of his movies) in this one, his character has an interesting twist which is revealed at the end of the film. Reminds me of “Oliver”. Not the usually the fair I’d be interested in, but hey Chris was in it. I found the main character to be grossly annoying and Anne Hathaway’s accent is only British half the time.
A Beautiful Mind – 2001 Synopsis: The mind of John Nash. Review:another great film. Great moment: Crowe punches Plummer because he thinks he’s a commie.
National Treasure – 2004 Synopsis: Cage steals the Declaration of Independence after his Grandpa tells him of a secret treasure map written on the back of it with invisible ink. Review: One horrid film I was forced to sit through years ago. I can’t understand why they made a sequel; I didn’t think the first made that much. I got this one from my TiVo and only watched Chris’ part. I don’t recommend this film. I can’t stand cage or bruckheimer.
Syriana - 2005 Synopsis: Oil, Lawyers and CIA. Clooney is James Bond in Bairut and Matt Damon gives powerful advice to Alexander Siddig. Review: woah. This is one of those films you’d have to watch more than once to understand it. Not really my cup of tea, very political but a great film. Loved the ending.
Must Love Dogs - 2005 Synopsis: Diane Lane is just divorced and forced into the dating field by her family, her sister signs her up for match making .com and she soon meets John Cusack a man who's not interested in just banging a chick. Chris plays Diane Lane's Father. Review: I’m not much for romantic comedy’s and there were many annoying cliques in this film. Don't quite understand the title of this film, neither character has a dog and for a man who's not just interested in banging a chick they almost do the deed on their second date. It was great to see Christopher Plummer run around with four women at a time and his own daughter answer's his personal ad. Oh yeah and his dead wife makes clothes for their children.
Dreamscape - 1984 Synopsis: Randy Quaid plays a telekinetic man who enters a program which allows people to enter into your dreams run by Max von Sydow and funded by Christopher Plummer. Plummer is interested in using it as a weapon by killing you in your dreams. Review: This one gets progressively worse as the film goes on, with hokey music and cheesy fight scenes.

MURDER BY DECREE is an interesting Holmes film. It has a terrific Watson in James Mason, and Mr. Plummer plays the part of Holmes as it's written for the film very well. But the character really isn't Sherlock Holmes, and the film's plot is very murky, as is it's cinematography.
A couple of friends of mine really love NATIONAL TREASURE, and I guess it made lots of money (hence the sequel), but I have to say it's one of the most lame brained films I've seen in a while.

Many many years ago, I rented a DVD called (I think) Bad Jim. It had to be the worst movie I have ever seen. And I've seen a lot of movies over the years. It starred James Brolin. He was a cowboy in it. Most of the film seemed to be of him riding this horse. First he would ride the horse going from left to right across the screen. Then he would ride the horse going from right to left across the screen. It was the kind of film that is so bad that it makes you laugh.....in the dramatic parts.

Do you know if it's Plummer playing that Violin? I hear he's quite musical and is a genius at the piano. But I have no idea if he plays the violin. Have you ever seen " Plan 9 From Outer Space"? I highly recommend watching it with a rifftrax.

Speaking of old B Sci Fi Flicks, there was this one that used to play years ago on the local station when I was a kid. These astronauts land on Mars or Venus, & it's run by all women. The Queen wears a mask. At the end, they rip off her mask & she's disfigured - that's why she hates men or something like that. Ring a bell?

Amazon Women on the Moon? LOL. No, but thanks anyway. This film is much older, like from the 1950's. It was a drama, or tried to be.

Just rented Sherlock: Case of Evil with VDO. It was good -not great. Loved seeing Gabrielle Anwar in it (she's great in Burn Notice).
I saw Nine Lives. Really recommend it. Glenn Close is phenomenal. I'm probably going to rent Damages - the TV show. Happy Endings was good, but my preference was Nine Lives.

CASE OF EVIL--oh, what a mess! Holmes fans tend to hate this film, but I have a strange fondness for it, mainly because of Mr. D'Onofrio. I really don't know what he's doing, but he's mesmerizing to watch.
I wish someone would cast Richard E. Grant as Holmes. He keeps circling the role, but never getting to it.

www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article581784.eceI'm a big fan of George Clooney. I bought the DVD "goodbye and goodnight" (It was only five bucks at walmart -akin to renting it.) I liked Syriana but felt really squeamish watching the chair scene where George got injured so badly. The link describes the 'worst' year' he ever spent.

Recent rentals (quite a few recently):
Year of the Dog - Molly Shannon- good but dark. Have to be in the right mood for it. As a woman who lost a dog in the past year, it was a little too close to home. Funny in an odd "ha-ha" I'm a little uncomfortable way. Once (irish musical) - really good, very "refreshing" & innovative And God Said Ha! This is an old one, but I recommend it for anyone has gone through cancer or who has had the time to heal from supporting someone going through cancer. A sibling has a long-term illness and lives with our parents, and some of it hit close to home but was still funny. Prestige- I really enjoyed it, but the mystery isn't that hard to figure out. I saw it in the theater, too. Jane Eyre - with Keira Knightly- it was ok. It wasn't my favorite version.
My family is coming so I've rented some comedies. They tend to like BBC type humor, which is probably too sophisticated for me. I loved a Fish Called Wanda, that's about as close to English humor as I get.
