Ross: "A lot of playwrights are angry."
And therein lies the problem with this episode and others from Season 6.

You know, I liked it. We've seen better, but I liked it. It wasn't horrible. It just lacked intensity, and that's what I think that the second half of this season has been lacking... not enough VDO in action.
Eames & the new detective - He's cute, and he seems like a nice guy. I'd rather see her with somebody else, than see Goren with somebody else. Idk, half of me was thinking... 'good for her'... and the other half was not so happy. Of course, that's the B/A shipper in me, getting upset with the thought of them not being together. I was like, 'Hey, Mr.! You're cutting in on my G/E time.' Idk, Goren seemed a little jealous at one point when they were talking as they walked down the street, and at another point when he was waiting around for her at his desk. .... I'm going to speculate here... after seeing this episode, I'm guessing that Goren calls Eames in the finale to tell her that his mother died. He's finally ready to talk, and she's out with this other guy. Idk, I could see this all going there.
Btw, the outside actors brought in for this episode did an incredible job!

I agree and think it's a very real possibility. Maybe it will make Bobby see the light and realize that he needs a life outside of work. Eames hasn't dated much. but we know that she has in the past, even when she was pregnant. I loved the line, "What you expect me to stay home and knit while I'm pregnant." PS, Also, I thought the acting by the guest stars were excellent as well. If the show does end this season I'd like to see that the everyone in the squad has found a new assurance and routine established with Ross and that Goren and Eames reflect their dedication to themselves as partners. I'd like to know that they were both still out there doing what they love and watching each others backs.

I liked it and I learned a lot (if the facts were true) about the deaf community. I thought it was interesting to bring in other detectives. I wish they'd do That with W/L. I think their going to bring back or at least Eames will mention the guest detective again. It was an okay episode, great compared to other TV. I really enjoyed watching the interaction with Eames and the detective (forgive my short term memory loss- I forgot his name). We've seen this with Goren a few times and it was very interesting to see Eames in he situation. Well, except he wasn't evil so it wasn't exactly he same.

It's late, so just a few points...
I did like this episode, especially the opening scene showing what the deaf go through - the moments when there is utter silence, we are brought into Malia's deaf world. Nice touch! And Thank God, no silly music.
Loved watching Goren sign, especially in the aria. I'm sure he was sort of faking it, but it looked good for TV.
The ADA, introducing herself to Goren & Ross. Isn't she the one from Masquerade? So why the intro's? And where is poor Theresa Randle? This lady is getting all of her gigs.
Goren looked very tired & weary through most of the episode - Mom having a bad time of it?
Finally, I thought Goren was a little jealous of Eames' friendship with Peter. Not "lover" jealousy, more the kind when your friend leaves you out of the loop. I don't think he likes it when she confides in other's and not in him.

I can't say I liked it, can't say I didn't. At the end I felt it was just OK although I must congratulate the guest actors for infusing the episode with what little energy it had. My disappointment lies in the buildup and interesting premise, and then having the episode fall flat on its face with a very ordinary motive. The deaf boyfriend kills his girlfriend's doctor because the bf was afraid the gf would leave him, like his hearing sister did before, once gf gets the implant allowing her to hear. Sorry, but there's nothing new or interesting about jealousy and fear, nothing really new and different to make this episode memorable. And while I find the information about the deaf community very informative, there wasn't much else there of substance. This episode is average at best, but only because of the guest stars and what I learned about the deaf.
Is there a possible romance for Eames in the future? Maybe. I just don't care enough about it. I'm more interested in knowing if the attitude expressed by the new Mom, that her baby daughter is "perfect" because she was born deaf, is an attitude shared by most deaf people. Would a deaf parent, indeed the entire community, celebrate the birth of a deaf child? I'm asking not to judge right or wrong, but to understand.
Maybe if those angry playwrights would write stories with really interesting truly evil villains, and write arias worthy of Goren engaging those villains, the episodes would be more memorable.

Techguy, there is a poster on the NBC Board who is one of the extras on the episode. She is deaf. I asked her if that was true, do most deaf parents desire a deaf child? She said yes, that the child can now be part of their culture & world. She also said seeing a baby sign is so cute.
I found it difficult to understand...

Thanks for the follow-up to my question DonnaJo. I can't say I understand any better why a deaf parent would want his/her child to be born deaf, but since I'm not in their position I'll withhold judgment. I really would like to know more beyond the obvious, that the child would "share" and "belong" in the culture of the deaf community, and would not be so predisposed to leave the deaf world behind. Maybe if I understood this better, I would also understand the deaf boyfriend better and perhaps have a better opinion of "Silencer."

I liked the episode, but nothing tremendously exciting about it beyond the fine work by the guest stars. The one exception to that being the actor playing the extra detective. I thought the role was written well enough, but the actor lacked a punch.
What I liked about the episode was the examination of the deaf community, but I thought that might have come about at the expense of the story.
Dang near snorted my Pepsi at the playwright line.
And it seemed that Goren and Eames were working very well with Ross on this one.

Ok, it was ok, and now how long till another g/e episode? sigh, will watch again and comment more, have an early appt to find out the results of my echo and perfussion test, all this no Goren is putting stress on my heart, jk. But nervous about results so cant get into my thoughts on show, but at the end I kept saying why did he shoot the Dean of the deaf school? Just to frame Larry? Cause she was married to a hearing man? Why not question him about that.
also I notice to the red head DA from mascarade, but I like her, hope she comes back more, I can see her and Goren together.

I can't say I'm terribly coherent this morning, but there were some things I really liked about "Silencer"[potatoes and otherwise...]. For the first time in a while it felt like we were only getting part of the story ... there were lots of questions raised for me that we didn't get beaned over the head with (yay). Including -- how and when and why did Goren learn to sign? There were a couple instances during the investigation that there seemed to be stuff percolating under the surface -- a deaf girlfriend, an army buddy that lost his hearing... who knows... and I don't really want to know. It's the old "there's more to the story but we're not telling" vibe that initially frustrated me, but which I grew to love! That Vincent and Kathryn consistently let us know that there's stuff roiling under the surface is one of the great joys of watching this show for me...
Also the exact nature of Alex and Peter's (the deaf liaison) relationship was interesting to watch. I got the feeling they might have had dinner or drinks or something after his first appearance -- they certainly got on first name basis very quickly, anyway (who else has ever called her Alexandra??)... and the "don't put me in the middle" line at the skating rink. Interesting. Alex was clearly doing a lot of thinking in this episode. And cooing over babies!!
And how about Ross playing cupid? "He seems like a nice man"... the guy clearly cares about his detectives, but you gotta get thru all the bluster to find it.
Anyway... I guess it was the little things I liked. Oh, and of course we got a nanosecond of Goren and Eames undercover. LOVE that! And that allfired annoying twitching that Goren has developed over the last couple seasons actually worked to his benefit when he was jonesin' for a Vicodin... :0)
Ok, enough to now. If you want more of the deaf backstory... there's a ton of stuff on the NBC board ... deep background from some of the deaf extras... interesting reading on those Silencer threads...

I liked it, they didn't clobber us with the obvious, is WL learning the joys of subtlety? And no music video again, yay!
I still don't get the anti-cochlear implant view, I guess you have to be part of the deaf culture to understand. But then again I don't understand any separatist philosophy. I've wondered if I were to loose a sense, which would I miss the most? and I think the answer would be hearing, I can't imagine life without music ....
On an OT note: ragincajun, good luck with the tests, and keep us posted.

I'd suspect there would be a difference in attitude from someone who had hearing and lost it and someone who was deaf from birth.
I saw some attraction between Alex and the translator, but I believe it disappeared. I don't think Alex was entirely sympathetic to his conflict between his loyalty to the deaf community and to the NYPD. Now, that doesn't mean that Alex wasn't on the same page as the translator when it came to not violating the deaf suspects and witness' rights--I think she, and Goren, were with him. But Alex has had to deal with her own conflicts between the job and other things, and she's always been loyal to the job. And I think she expects the same from other cops.
I also think that Goren might have downplayed some of his knowledge of sign language at the start of this case. As for his knowing it, there doesn't have to be a personal connection (although I grant it's likely). He has some aptitude for language--I wonder if that would apply to learning sign?
And I think this is one of those cases where Goren and Eames may go out and have a Scotch and margarita at the end of the case. Everybody seemed a victim in some way.
Was the Vicodin reference a nod at HOUSE?

Knowing what we know about Goren, sign language seems a good fit. Its very much a kinesthetic and contextual language, and Goren excels at SEEING things and making connections between them, and has some facility with languages, so voila!
I found it facinating to watch him at the skating rink watching Malia and her boyfriend and trying to "interpret" what they were saying and how they were saying it... mostly cause I suspect he does that with everyone, not just with those using sign language. And of course the whole "eavesdropping" angle was great.

I've had some experience with the deaf world, so maybe I can help out with some background.
The used to be two distinct schools of thought on "how to educate the deaf". One was to "mainstream"--teach lip-reading only, no signing, hearing aids if possible--the other was to stay separate and sign only, no hearing aids. Oftentimes "sign only" and "no sign" boarding schools competed for students.
I have heard and seen the same resentment to the hearing world--most deaf people do not consider themselves handicapped, and do not want to be fixed. Cochlear implant surgery has become quite a political issue, and many in the deaf community are hostile to the surgery.
I liked this one, with some of the intensity of the past years (not enough though) and nice little inferences between the characters. btw, I also saw Goren as getting more sign-fluent as the episode continued. VDO looked and sounded tired and hoarse, with some flashes of the old Goren-- but again, not enough.
