From the "The New Women of Law & Order" article on pp. 38-39.
Connie Nielsen (Det. Dani Beck-Law & Order : SVU)
"Previous beats: She's costarred in the movies "The Devil's Advocate," "Rushmore," "Mission to Mars" and Gladiator."
Character traits: Warrants officer Beck jumps to the sex-crimes squad to sub for Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay, on maternity leave). "Dani's a loner, really strange and very tough," Nielsen says. "She lost her husband, a cop. She wants to be an avenging angel."
Partners in crime-fighting: In a radical move for the all-about-the-case franchise, Beck and partner Det. Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) get romantic! As a bonus, she gets STabler out of his cop suits - and into jeans and denim jackets. "She teaches him to lose his stiffness."
Learning curve: Producers didn't want a carbon copy of the Emmy-winning Hargitay's Benson. "The whole point is that I'm different," Nielsen says. "My character is not stepping in as a new SVU specialist - she's a complete bumbling food who's going to make a lot of mistakes."
Real-life romance: Girlfriend of Metallica dummer Lars Ulrich.
Pending cases: Beck attempts to solve crimes involving child prostitution, abused children locked in cages and abandoned senior citizens with dementia."
