Yesterday I saw the Whole Wide World for the first time. I thought it was amazing! I know the real story was a bit more bitter, but this movie seemed like the most beautiful lovestory ever .. (I actually thought he made a joke when he said that they shouldn't have allowed women to vote ... ;-) How the film was made, the acting, for the first time in my life I wasn't annoyed by Renee Zellweger, it was all terrific... What did you think about this movie?

This is one of my favorite films. I'd be forever grateful for LOCI just for it's introducing me to this film. And I highly recommend the DVD commentary by Mr. D'Onofrio and the film's director.

Great movie/story, wonderful acting ability but D'Onofrio had a GOD-AWFUL accent in that thing! Yick! If you can't do it don't even try. Renee Zellwegger I was most impressed with, loved the film.
Did you know that Olivia d'Abo was originally slated to play Novalyne? In D'Onofrio's words she "decided to have a baby" and backed out, clearing the way for Zellweger. Thank God! No offense to d'Abo, but I don't think I could have stood two fake southern drawls. Anyways, that's why d'Abo listed under "Special Thanks" in the movie credits.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Accent? What accent? VDO's performance was so compelling, he could have been speaking Chinese and I would still watch!! Zellwegger said the WWW was a "movie lovers movie." I agree.

It gave us the best screen kiss ever in the whole wide world I wonder if Novelyn could have only waited out, the passing on of his mother, would they have been able to find happiness together?

Gosh, that kiss .... She just kissed him on the cheek and then he turned his head ... I melted from the couch ... In fact it was the only kiss they ever shared .. too sad ..

I don't think Novalyne should have waited. To me it was not very clear in the movie, because I think they made it more romantic then it was in real lfe and the part played by Vincent might have colored my view "somewhat". But what I've read about the real story is that Robert E. Howard was a terrible person and lead Novalyne on. He was really a bigot, rude, totally obsessed with his mother and very crazy. Fortunaltely Novalyne found the love of her life after all, they had a son and were very happy. Unfortunately he died and she is still living by herself at the age of 88.
P.S. I also read about Olivia D'Arbo. I also think she wouldn't have done it as great as Renee Zellweger did. If I would ever have the oppertunity I would ask Vincent why he wanted her in the first place and then go for Renee?

I absolutely love this movie. I bought it sight unseen, and I am so glad I did. As someone else has said, this is the first time I found I could tolerate Rene Zellwegger, and indeed I actually found myself appreciating her talents. There were actually two kisses in the film between Novalyne and Bob - the first was that magnificent one that's already been briefly discussed, and the other is outside Novalyne's boarding house, and hints of desperation on Bob's part. I don't think the outcome would have been any different for Novalyne and Bob, had she waited around for his mother to pass on. Bob actually killed himself before his mother died, not after, and that was something he had always planned on doing. He simply couldn't exist without his mother, no matter how strong Novalyne's influence might have been. It's a fantastic film, though, and so wonderful to see Vincent D'Onofrio in a great leading role like that. I loved the commentary, too. It was like listening to a boys' club reunion. And it was kind of sweet to hear Vincent talk about how he was embarrassed to have to watch 'The Kiss' again.

[quote author=Summerfield Accent? What accent? [/quote]
To quote the vernacular, "Where you stay?". I my own self may not have much of a southern accent, but I have heard the real thing all my life and D'Onofrio's wasn't even close. I kept getting distracted becase it was so overdone and off. I could still really get into the characters and story, but it was annoying. Zellweger is from Texas, I think she just thickened hers naturally cause she sounded fine.
Guess I ought to hear the DVD commentary then, all I saw was a video from Blockbuster a summer ago.
Oh no, Novalyne made the right decision to not tie herself to him. Wasn't she trying to keep in touch with him through letters and all? But she had her own life to lead and she knew she could only do so much before he made the decision.
My Mom is a teacher, so I was howling at the line "Do you see any children for me to defile with my damns?" How great--how true to life!

Hmmmmm, I guess I am just a dreamer……
Its been so long since I have seen the movie. What I remember most is the two of them arguing in his car. Robert crying and banging his hands on the steering wheel, saying something like…..“I just want a woman to love me“ Yes, I know Robert had a lot of issues.. But, I don’t know, I think his mom was a big part of the problem too, had she not been around….would things have been different? Would the two have had a chance at happiness? Remember her in the store holding on to Roberts arm? The way she looked at Novelyn, was just sick. I don’t know….I by no means am saying that Novelyn should have stayed, but I just wonder, what could have been..
I need to pull it out and watch it again. It gives me the same feelings as Gone With The Wind with the scenery . A majestic love story. That kiss, there is something so pure, innocent and raw. Like it was the first time he ever kissed a woman. The portrayal of Robert by VDO, makes me wish more for Robert Howard.

I'm going to watch this DVD over and over again too ... The accent I don't know about since I'm not american, so that won't bother me. But I can imagine that if you know the accent, it will .. The same as in a lot of movies when they refer to my country or try to imitate the accent and they are totally wrong ... My 3 favorite scenes are The (first) Kiss ofcourse , that car-scene mentioned here above, and the scene in the woods, where you watch them in the backs.

Yeah, if you aren't from around here you probably wouldn't know. I know that the British Isles have lots of different regional accents, but I couldn't identify them. (I love the BBC imports like "Mystery", but I couldn't tell you whether they were close. I've gotten tow here I can pick out fake accents, like really bad American attempts, but hardly an expert.) I can only imagine what the Aussies think of a lot of attempts!
I'll need to see the movie again, it's been a while.

Novalyne Price-Ellis died in 1999 at age 91.
TWWW is based on her memoir about Bob Howard "One Who Walked Alone." Has anyone read this book to confirm whether she says they really kissed? Or does the movie take some liberties with the real story to suggest a romance between them?

Coincidently, I have the book on order from Amazon right now. I saw the cover of the book, and it shows VD'O as Bob Howard at his typewriter. I am anxious to get it. I'm sure they probably took some liberties with the film, but even if they did it's fine with me. I just love that movie SO much. And not knowing much about Texas accents, I thought VD'O did a great job with it. In my opinion it's one of the best acting jobs he's ever done, and we all know he's done plenty of great acting jobs.
I'm on a WWW kick right now. Can't tell you how many times I've watched that movie, but just in the last month probably 4 times, plus ordering the book. I guess you can tell I like it!
