Thought that I would start a thread about this new addition to LOCI. Personally, I'm very excited about Goldblum joining the series. It's almost (but not quite) as good as having Liev Schriever. I enjoy Jeff's work. I don't know much about him in terms of his "method" of acting or how he feels about...well..anything. But I know we'll learn tons about him very soon. People have expressed that with Chris Noth, the show felt more like the mothership. With Goldblum, I don't think that will be said. I'm sure they will try & make him more like Goren in terms of quirky. Who knows, he may be written as the "old" Goren to appease those who miss that character. Any thoughts?

I have to admit that I never really watched the Logan episodes, to me they we're like a different show. I'm watching CI for Goren (especially) and Eames.
As a Goren fan I would HATE it if they made the new character a copy of him / his "old" behavior.

I agree with LO:CI - I don't think that they should have JG act like the "old" Goren. It would probably disappoint alot of Vincent/Goren fans who are hoping that some of the "old" Goren will reappear somewhere down the line.. maybe in the Fall? The old Goren had alot more life, attitude, and appeal. It's those quirky, brainy, ballsy, in your face characteristics that endeared us to him in the first place. I personally don't want to see a watered down version of Goren to benefit JG's character. Especially if Season 8 "is it". If they were to go to a season 9 w/o Goren.. that's another story..

Interesting thread, one that promises to evoke some sharply contrasting opinions. Yes! Thank you, Donna.
I could never interpret an idiosyncratic Jeff Goldblum as a watered-down version of Goren Mark I. JG has ALWAYS portrayed odd and intelligent (sometimes omniscient) characters. It's his signature, really.
Whatever JG does, I doubt that it will be a pale imitation or reprise of classic Goren, but I do welcome any injection of quirky brilliance laced with humour that will fill the heart of this show. There is, to my mind, a black hole in LOCI. Goren is the dark star, still the centre of the LOCI universe, but now just sucking the life out of it. VDO's Goren is such a powerful presence, so adored, and so, um, absent. Or redrawn.
In any case, the two actors/characters aren't going toe to toe. Until Goren pulls out of his coma - er - nosedive, I hope that JG will get great lines, which he will of course deliver in his piercing-but-languid style, and bring some Joy back to Mudville. Can't wait to see what happens here, especially with Warren out the door (and I do admire him so, but.......)

Jeff Goldblum on L&O? WOW. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

If VDO was leaving (instead of Chris Noth) Jeff Goldblum would probably be on my list of possible replacements and I think this is my primary worry/problem...

If VDO was leaving (instead of Chris Noth) Jeff Goldblum would probably be on my list of possible replacements and I think this is my primary worry/problem... I wouldn't worry about VDO being replaced by Goldblum, DNA. I don't see VDO going anywhere right now. He's very immersed in Goren & wants to see the character finish this arc he's in. Besides, the moneys great! NBC Universal may feel that they now owe Jeff Goldblum. His show Raines was yanked by NBC prematurely. It never was given a chance to build an audience. So this may be a timely opportunity to pay him back.

I wouldn't worry about VDO being replaced by Goldblum Sorry, I didn't really make myself clear. I don't think Goldblum will replace VDO. As actors I don't think they are that much alike, yes they can both do "Quirky/Intense", but that's where the similarity end's. To be honest "Quirky/Intense" and funny is the only thing I have ever seen Goldblum do, the same can not be said for VDO. I like Jeff Goldblum and I am looking forward to seeing what he has to bring to the table, but I don't want a replacement for "Quirky/Intense" Goren and I don't want a stand in until we get the old Goren back (if that's even plausible)... so I guess I'm just curious to see if this is what we will get. When I said Goldblum could replace VDO I guess what I meant was If VDO had never been cast as Goren, Goldblum could have played Goren or a Goren type character, but both of them alternating on the same show may cause some kind of "Quirky/Intense" overdose.

In another thread Donna contributed the IMDb bio for Jeff Goldblum. Thanks DJ! For those who haven't yet accessed it, here's the link to his page on Wikipedia -- where (of course) there's more detail on Jeff Goldblum than there is on Geoffrey Chaucer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_GoldblumNo warranties made about the accuracy of this very detailed profile. It's already been updated to include "Lead Role, Law and Order: Criminal Intent" 2008-- ( and not by me). AL

Hi,
As for Goldblum being compared to Goren, it seems to create an unfair expectation on any new coming detective/character as a Goren clone. Why can't the new detective be accepted for whatever qualities he/she brings to the show? I suppose Goren gets compared to Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps Goldblum's character should be compared to Holmes first, then Goren. There's enough quirkiness to go around.
If they have good stories : interesting and clever, I believe that the new character would succeed. This goes back to a solid story-driven format rather than a character-driven format. It'll be interesting to see how Goldblum's character is written. Will CI writers go the Monk format or remain true to the L&O format?
I agree with DNA that Goldblum seems to channel a lot of quirk in a lot of his roles. Goren/DO seems to be straight with quirky traits while Goldblum is through and through quirk with occasional bouts of sanity. A little Goldblum seems to go a long way. It'll be interesting to see how he's integrated into the show. Maybe if Goldblum pulls out his dark side, plays down his quirk energy, he'll seem a convincing detective.
I wonder if Wheeler will be staying. She's beginning to look like a sane choice afterall. Might balance out Goldblum plus the actress would get a chance to explore Wheeler's role.
