I've never followed the mothership--I don't watch it now, whereas I've watched all of CI and faithfully. I was in high school when the original episodes of L&O were airing--and didn't have a lot of time for it. I've been watching and avidly purchasing seasons 1-4, really liking Logan and Greevey, Logan and Briscoe, Van Buren, and above all Ben Stone. I don't see how anyone could watch those early seasons and not feel like they were watching something well-wrought and satisfying.
So here's my question: jefferaldo mentioned liking seasons 5-11 a whole lot better. I was curious as to what anyone here felt. Are they better or worse than the original four? If so, why? If I'm not wild about Clare Kincaid and I feel like Sam Waterston is a comedown from Moriarty, is there any reason to watch beyond 5? Are there characters coming I'm going to like better?? Is it worth it for the stories?? I'm up for season 5 because I'm still enjoying Logan and want to see his infamous firing--but beyond that, how much do I really need to see to be in the know?

I actually found all the seasons of the Mothership past season 5 to be QUITE sub par to the first five.
Mind you I'm probably not the most objective person to ask - Law and Order was never the same for me after Logan left - I tried watching in season 6 and bits and pieces ( a show here a show there after that ) but I lost interest in it pretty quickly!!
I still like the Order party - But have never been that impressed with the cast additions in the Law department.

Hmmm....I've watched L&O since the beginning, and I can't honestly peg things getting bad until the past few years. And I freely admit, a few years before that it had become rerun TV rather than must-see. My favorite years would have to be the Logan/Briscoe years...what were those, seasons 4-5? Part of season 3? There are really too many seasons to keep track of with the Mothership. At first I loved it, but I do think the additions of female cast members made a HUGE improvement. As a teenage girl, I adored Clare Kincaid I can see certain weaknesses in her character now that I'm an adult, but I still have a huge soft spot for her. I would say one of the highlights if you continue watching (and I think you should! ) is the introduction of Jamie Ross. I think all the ADA Asst.'s have paled in comparison since her. In the Q&A interview Rene Balcer did with this board last year he said this when asked about his favorite assistant, which tickled me pink: A: I’ll limit myself to the two assistants during my tenure as showrunner of “Law & Order” (seasons 7-10). Hands down my favorite was Jamie Ross – as McCoy’s intellectual and professional equal, she was a pleasure to write. And the actress playing her, Carrie Lowell, was an absolute gem – mature, gracious, worldly, generous, sincere and smart as a whip. As an example of the esteem she was held in by the writers, Carrie was the only actor whose suggestion for a story (genital mutilation) we took. She was much loved and respected by the cast and crew.

SarahIvy,
You've convinced me to keep Netflixing! I thought season 4 in particular was fantastic.
I like Claire Kincaid too--she just kind of reminds me of the pretty girls at my high school in the '90s! I think that that may be the issue ...
