Okay, couldn't find last year's thread regarding the similar seminar in New York... mtr.org/festivals/paleyfest2005/index.htmThe next one is in Los Angeles: Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. LAW & ORDER In Person: Neal Baer, Rene Balcer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Walon Green, Peter Jankowski, Christopher Meloni, Eric Overmyer, Annie Parisse, Dick Wolf Moderator: Bernard Weinraub As the guiding force behind Law & Order and its universe of spin-offs (Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury), Dick Wolf has created a brand unrivaled in the history of the medium. Producers and cast members from each show will join Wolf to discuss how the L&O formula—fast-paced, ripped-from-the-headlines plotting, gritty authenticity, and fearless exploration of important social issues—continues to set the standard for the prime-time crime drama.

If anyone is able to go, I think I'm not the only person who would welcome a report.

I hope for a report as well. However, FYI to all. If you go to the Museum of Television and Radio either in NY or LA, you will be able to reserve a seat in their viewing room for 2 hours, and should be able to watch a video of this seminar. They have various L&O seminars from the past, including some with the dearly departed Jerry Orbach. So plan for your next vacation........

According to a poster on another site who attended the event, Vincent D'Onofrio was a "no show" for the MTR seminar. Mariska Hargitay could not attend due to a family emergency. Her absence was explained to the audience, but D'Onofrio's was not. D.

I know it states "Events/participants are subject to change.", but it seems to be rather inconsiderate explaining the absence of one and not the other.

I was disappointed that Vincent D'Onofrio was a no-show for that event. I had a front row seat!
Anne Parisse was the only actor who attended. A bit ironic considering the topic was "L & O: The Brand" and there she was, only a few months on the show.
LOCI did'nt get as much air-time as SVU or L & O (the mothership) during the discussion mainly because Rene Balcer (who represented LOCI) wouldn't elaborate on his answers. He tended to trivialize the discussion, especially at the beginning. The other writers from SVU were more engaging and "serious" with their responses.

Well, there doesn't seem to be any explanation for Christopher Meloni's absence, either, so I'm not sure Id worry about Mr. D'Onofrio. (Unless there was?)
And Mezzosoprano, I ask of curiousity and not confrontation--what do you mean by saying Rene Balcer "trivialized" his answers?

also, is the recap correct - 1. there is no plan to go into a deep depression for Goren
2. It was mentioned that some things are over thought? Some things really are a product of the mood of the day for the writer, actor, director?
thanks.

Hi PatCat! Sorry I wasn't able to respond sooner.
One of the first questions asked by the moderator was why we don't know much about the personal lives of the characters on the shows. The moderator indicated that everyone is to respond starting with Dick Wolf then down the line.
Dick Wolf answered that it was mainly because there's no time to inject personal stuff in a fast-paced one-hour crime drama. Then it was Rene Balcer's turn. He shrugged and said something like "that's it ..." I don't remember the exact words but what he meant was whatever DW said was his response too.
Another question asked was what their favorite episode is. Rene Balcer said something like all of them, then qualified it a bit by saying "as a writer, whatever you recently finish, becomes your favorite (or something to that effect).
The SVU writer was more candid and engaging with his responses; gave specific episodes. (I don't watch SVU so I don't remember the episodes mentioned). Anyhow, he gave very specific reasons why certain episodes were more "meaningful" to them. He even shared what Mariska Hargitay thought of the issues presented in those episodes.
Bottomline, the SVU & L & O (mothership) writers gave more meaty responses.
I realize Rene Balcer's fans will not like these comments but these are just my observations. I wondered if I was the only one who sensed these and when I talked to some people in the audience; they observed the same thing too.

It's always so insightful to hear what Balcer, Wolf, et al have to say about the show.
I know people involved in shows sometimes do online chats and interviews. I wonder if it would be possible ever to get any of TPTB to consent for an interview for this site? We don't have "live chat posting" but what if we could get the questions gathered and then present them to the interviewee to answer?
I'd not only be interested to hear responses from D'Onofrio, Erbe, Balcer & Wolf, but also from some of the writers -- like Gomard-Meyer and Sengupta. Wonder how difficult it would be to get one of them to agree to a site interview -- and, what the mechanics of it would be. Any interest?

The online L&O fanzine conducted interviews with Dick Wolf, Rene Balcer, Jerry Orbach, and other actors and producers of the franchise. Maybe the moderators could contact NBC to see what might be arranged? On a related note, on the NBC LOCI website there is a link for "fanfare". It includes a button to submit your site for review by NBC and inclusion in their list of links. I already submitted Criminal Intent US, but maybe if more people did the same TPTB might pay more attention. Good luck- D.
