I bought a VHS of this movie off eBay yesterday out of curiosity. It was in VHS NTSC (?) format and sealed. I am curious to know if it was a legitimate VHS release or what. I have never seen it for sale anywhere before. I figure if anyone knows anything about it, you guys would!

Depends .... there were many knockoffs from Asia on this; I unfortunately got one - it works, but I would have rather given my money to the ligitimate producing company.
I really liked the Investigator; a charming, sweet, odd little filmette.

Thanks! When I get it, I'll tell whether or not I won some weird import knockoff. There is no Asian writing on the box, so maybe I got a good copy. LOL! ;D

NTSC is the VHS format used in North America. Other parts of the world use PAL. It should work for you. And I agree with Metella...it's very "charming, sweet, odd..."

I just got to see this thanks to another VDO fan. I agree that it's a sweet, odd (in a good way) film.
D'Onofrio is so good at playing menacing overpowering characters that it's a revelation to see him play a quiet, introverted character. There's something so vulnerable about his character in THE INVESTIGATOR that you want to wrap him up in a blanket and give him hot chocolate.

Where can you get The INVESTIGATOR? I'd like to see it, from hearing what you guys have said...

The only source I was able to find was an Asian VCD (as Metella aptly put, a "knockoff"), via EBay. They come around regularly - every month or so. If you search on "D'Onofrio" you will find it. I would be glad to pay for a "real" tape or DVD could I find one.
Maybe NicoleMarie had more success?

I had semi-sucesss. (Is that a word? ) Well, I finally got a chance to play the tape but it would not play. Thinking the tape was broke, I looked at where the tape was made. The place was listed as "Queensland". I looked up Queensland on the internet and found that Queensland is in Australia. Hence, the tape not NTSC, it is PAL. Just my luck. Hmm...Now what? Is it possible to switch the VHS to NTSC?

Hmm...Now what? Is it possible to switch the VHS to NTSC? Yes, you can get it professionally converted for $15-20 generally. The place I have used before is Discount Dub. www.discountdub.com However, you might be able to find a local place in the phone book if you live in a large city. Good luck, D.

Does anyone know whether the Australian version is from a legitimate release or a knockoff? This is one of the very few works of his that I haven’t seen yet, and if there’s a legitimate source I’d love to buy one and have it converted.

I have no idea. I have no idea what a knock off would "look like" but, my VHS looks just like something you would buy out of a store. It has a case with photos and everything. I guess a knockoff would be a low quality VHS. Blurred, jumpy, etc. Once I get the converted version back, I will let everyone know what I did in fact buy. Here's crossing my fingers! ETA: I copied the photos taken of the VHS by the seller. I would post them here but 1) I don't think I'm allowed to and, 2) I don't know how! LOL! I'd like for you guys to see the photos of it, then maybe you could tell me if it's a knockoff.

No - some of the kockoff are done in Asian firms that are very high-tech; they just get a master copy and then duplicate and sell it themselves. The thing is .... they don't pay any royalty to the legitimate owners - so they steal it, basically, and then resell it and THEY get the profit - not the writers, producers, actors, costume, set, all-other-support people. It is a real drain on mid-level and indie films I would think. Anyway, one of my pet peeves & I fell victim to it before I knew it was so commonplace and had such wide-reaching affects.

I hope I didn't buy a knockoff! I bought mine from a person, not a company. Maybe they bought it in Australia and brought it back to the USA? (I reallly hate speculating!) *SIGH* I bought this second hand (tho it was sealed and new) from an ebay seller so I have no clue where they originally got it from. Grrr...How am I ever gonna know if it's a knockoff or not? This was made in Australia, not Asia...It was made by MRA Entertainment Group in Australia. I'm going on a Yahoo binge to see what I can find out about them! I wonder if any Aussies know about the company?
