Hey Guys have you all seen the Newton Boys if not it is a must see true story and it is the funniest bankrobber movie I have ever seen. They couldn't have made this stuff up. I also have seen recently the Movie Desire/Salt On Your Skin. I think Vince is fabulous in the role as Gavin. Jinger

I've seen The Newton Boys, but didn't care for it too much...maybe it just wasn't my type of movie. I, do, however, LOVE Vincent in Desire; my other favs are The Velocity of Gary, Happy Accidents, The Whole Wide World, Paradise Hotel and Nunzio's Second Cousin. The LO:CI part goes w/o saying.
As an aside, you might want to correct the "typo" in your signature.

It was a remake of a true story, i enjoyed it as all Vincents films, i really watch them to see him as a character actor he never disappoints. Infact he saves some films that are plain boring with his unique style.

I liked it ... mostly as it was based on real events. When I say I liked it, I just mean that, it was not more than an average, entertain you for a couple of hours flick. Sure nothing to get your friends rounded up to the theater for.
I think the characters were shown too "modern" their attitudes & manners of speech to me seemed out of synch with the time period.

For me, the Newton Boys missed the mark. To do what he did, the ringleader would have had to have been intensely charismatic. He certainly didn’t seem that way to me, so much of the film seemed weak, and some of it dragged a bit. It seems to me that the people who made the casting decisions for the Newton Boys committed what I think of as the Lobotomy error. The people doing the casting for The First Turn-On looked at an actor with tremendous sensuality and saw only someone to play the big, dumb guy named Lobotomy (though he still managed to turn the sculpting scene into something nearly pornographic). In the same way, the people casting the Newton Boys apparently saw an actor big enough to make people believe he could take however many bullets (I’ve forgotten, but it was a remarkable number) and survive – and so they totally overlooked the fact that he could do what their lead couldn’t – play someone with the underlying intensity and charisma to carry that story and make it believable. It was one of those films that needed an outstanding character actor in the lead. Unfortunately, it didn’t get one. I did enjoy parts of the movie; and it’s also one of several movies (five, at least) that convinced me that Goren’s attention to subtle scents was something D’Onofrio brought to the character. Yeah, I suppose it’s possible that the writer threw in that bit of primitive forensics (D’Onofrio’s character grabs someone’s hand and sniffs it to see if he has really fired a gun in the past few minutes), but when you get so many different films where D’Onofrio’s character has an unusual awareness of scent, that gets to be too much of a coincidence. I only remember one other where he used it as forensics... Spanish Judges... though I could easily be forgetting some (Good Luck doesn’t really count as forensics, though it *was* how he knew Lem had lied about the makeup ). But my favorite is Happy Accidents, where it was just a sweet, fun little addition.

I do think that D'Onofrio would have been a far better choice for lead in this flick. It would have improved it, it would not have been a top film, but it would have been vastly improved.
I disagree on the importance on the hand sniffing on this one. The smell from a discharged gun is not very subtle, it will fade if a guy washes etc but will be there. In that time period, it would have been much more common to grab a guy's hand and say "we'll just see if you have been shooting" or some such and sniff his hand. It is a distinctive smell, so even an unsubtle cowpoke could make a pretty decent guess ...... so I think it would have been in the film no matter what actor was cast in that role.

This movie was a top flick? I never saw it until it ran on Superstation, and then only because I knew VDO was in it.
I agree that he's a 100x better actor than MM, but also that his name doesn't ring bells with most movie goers -- which is funny considering that a lot of people I know have seen more movies that VDO has been in than MM.
MM was on The Daily Show not long ago (promoting his new movie with Steve Zahn). It was probably the least funny guest spot on Jon's show for a while until the Dennis Miller incident. MM is a good enough actor to play a pretty smart guy (thinking of U571), but he's not smart. I guess sitting next to Jon Stewart for 6 minutes can make anyone look a little dumb, but damn!
I don't know for sure about the sniffing, but I would say, yes, probably not many other ways to know who fired a gun back then. Still, it is something that we see D'Onofrio do in many of his films, and in places you don't normally expect, like the part in Spanish Judges that Observer noted.

TNB got an extensive write-up in Entertainment Weekly with lots of pictures, including the cover, of the 'reel' Newtons.
Even the though film was pretty good, I enjoyed the hilarious segment at end with one of the "real" Newtons on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson a lot more. ;D

I'm away from my clippings, but I recall an interview in which Mr. D'Onofrio was asked what THE NEWTON BOYS was about. "It's about a movie star and his brothers," he replied

He said that? Meow!
(Not that it doesn't sound true though.)
I liked it, but I agree, it wasn't the best film of any genre. Just an enjoyable romp.

Indeed a very funny movie!!! I liked it very, very much! Also in the end, during the end-titles (is that english?)when they show clips from the real bankrobbers in a tv- show telling some stories .... ;D

The best thing about this movie, IMHO, is VDO in the oil-rig scene... when they are walking to the car... Let's just say That Man's *talents* in a certain area have evidently NOT been underestimated!! caseyswife
