(Mods, I checked this folder and didn't see an existing thread. Feel free to move if I goofed.)
I made a note of this on the B&W thread of "Films" but Turner Classic Movies will be showing "Ed Wood" late Sunday night. Technically it's the morning of Monday 18th, 1:30 AM-3:45 AM (Eastern time). All hail to TCM, unedited and no commercials. Just thought a few people might be interested.

I saw Ed Wood last night for the first time - thoroughly enjoyed it, although I admit I was eagerly awaiting Vincent's cameo. I have to ask, though, what was with the voice? Maybe I was tired, but that did not sound anything like Vincent's voice. Did they dub another voice in, and if so, why??? I suppose, after countless hours of CI, and listening to those dulcet tones, it was a slight shock to hear a completely different voice issuing from his mouth. Talk about being weirded out...

It's not VDO's voice--it's the work of Maurice LaMarche (spelling?), an extremely gifted voice actor who often does Orson Welles. He was the voice of the Brain in the cartoon PINKY AND THE BRAIN, and did many voices for the cartoon THE CRITIC (including that show's version of Orson Welles).
VDO apparently didn't have a great deal of time to film his scenes for ED WOOD (he's spoken occasionally of his frustrations with the time limitations, although he also spoke highly of Tim Burton), and his voice didn't come out as well as Tim Burton had hoped. So Mr. LaMarche was called in.

I guess that's fair enough. It just sounded weird. But isn't there another short film he directed himself, where he played Orson Welles again...? *sigh* We never see any of that stuff here in Australia.

Blucougar57, the movie is "Five Minutes, Mr. Welles." From what I've read on other fan boards, it will be screened at the Venice Film Festival later this year.

www.moviehole.net/reviews/20030828_841.htmlI've highlighted the special mention about Vinces' acting!Ed Wood - Special Edition (DVD) Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette Tim Burton’s a director with a very defined set of skills. He’s got a knack for nifty, eye-catching production design, an appealingly oddball sense of humour and an affinity for freaks, geeks and characters on the fringes of everyday society. He has his liabilities - he apparently couldn’t shoot a cool action scene if you put a gun to his head - but when he finds a project he truly connects with, it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing it justice. I can name 20 other directors who should have helmed that Planet of the Apes remake; I can’t think of anyone else who could have made Ed Wood. Burton and screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have taken one or two liberties in bringing the life of Edward D. Wood, Jr to the screen - for example, it’s doubtful that Plan 9 from Outer Space received such a positive response at its premiere - but the movie has so much affection for Ed and his dreams of Hollywood stardom that it feels downright nasty to nitpick. Besides, having read Nightmare of Ecstasy, Rudolph Grey’s comprehensive biography of Ed, I’m fairly sure Ed Wood actually gets it right when it comes to accurately presenting a great many of the stranger-than-fiction incidents and larger-than-life characters in the man’s story. Johnny Depp, in a performance that’s both endearingly sincere and deeply weird, plays Ed, veteran of World War Two, would-be creative powerhouse and part-time transvestite. He wants to write, direct and star in his own movies, just like his idol Orson Welles. But there’s a bit of a problem - Ed’s work kinda stinks on ice. From the cross-dressing melodrama of Glen or Glenda? to the bizarre horror of Bride of the Monster to the jaw-dropping sci-fi thrills of Plan 9 from Outer Space (“This is the one they’ll remember me for,” Ed declares), Ed’s movies are all painstakingly written, inventively produced, woodenly acted, incoherently directed and close to unwatchable. In all honesty, have you ever tried to watch Plan 9 without the aid of illegal narcotics? It’s almost impossible to understand, let alone sit through! But that’s not the point, Ed Wood is saying. Ed had a dream, not to mention the kind of never-say-die spirit that any would-be filmmaker should possess, and that makes him a compelling, identifiable and likeable fella. Plus who could turn their nose up at a guy with a repertory company that includes posh cross-dresser Bunny Breckenridge (Bill Murray), sham fortune teller Criswell (Jeffrey Jones) and hard-luck horror movie legend Bela Lugosi (Oscar winner Martin Landau)? All these characters - and many others - are given their moment in the spotlight, and each actor makes the most of it. (In a cool cameo, Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Vincent D’Onofrio makes a striking appearance as Orson Welles, showing up in the third act to give Ed a pep talk. It’s unlikely the two men ever met in real life, but it’s a lovely little scene nonetheless.) And while Depp holds the film together with his great work as Ed, Landau walks off with the acting honours here. He simply is Bela - funny, fierce and heartbreaking as the one-time Hollywood legend who falls on hard times but finds a weird kind of salvation as the star of Ed’s movies. This is Tim Burton’s best film to date, and it shows that the director’s real talents may lie in telling offbeat, intimate little stories, not overseeing high-concept blockbusters. Almost a decade after its initial release, it’s good to find it on DVD - its luscious B&W cinematography comes up a treat - and this Special Edition has a handful of interesting features. An informative commentary by Burton, Landau, Alexander, Karaszewski and director of photography Stefan Czapsky is the highlight, and the short doco “Making Bela” (with Landau and make-up whiz Rick Baker revealing how they collaborated to bring Lugosi back to life) is worthwhile as well. But the rest of the docos aren’t all that great, with the making-of feature little more than boring behind-the-scenes some PA seems to have shot with a camcorder. Rating : Reviewer : Guy Davis

Ella I saw Ed Wood.....The picture was very well done....just, not my type of picture. I love Johnny Depp, in just about everything he does...He was good ,but just not my style of movie....and, VDO was perfect in my eyes as Orson Welles....but such a short part. Then they use someone else's voice...?What was the matter with VDO's voice? ? This makes me want to see 5 minutes Mr Welles even more....... I am glad he finally got a chance to write, produce, and star in this little gem of his...It has GOT to be good...... Shadow

PC you know you can buy 'em online: $9 each unless you're a student in which case they're only $5 each! If you buy em before the 26th, they mail 'em to your house - how sweet is that?
For the price of a sealed NT tape you and 27 of your friends can go to the film festival. Or you could take 48 students! LOL!

Thank you, Techguy.
Ummm, I was wondering exactly how many scenes in the movie feature D'Onofrio's Orson Welles? Meaning, is it worth taping this? I remember reading that the voice is dubbed with another actor's.
