On Wednesday night (when VDO, Erbe, Nicholson, et al were backing an Obama debate-watching Manhattan club event) Placido Domingo successfully bid $16K to win a small speaking part on an upcoming L&O. The auction also took place in Manhattan, at an annual charity affair, The Princess Grace Awards, which were co-sponsored this year by Dick Wolf and his wife Noelle. Among those in attendance: Jeff Goldblum and Mariska Hargitay. Source: The New York Postwww.nypost.com/seven/10172008/gossip/pagesix/placidos_high_note_bid_133928.htmAL

This is wonderful. Everyone benefits. Who would have thought that Placido Domingo would actually be interested in a guest spot on the mothership? I know it was for charity, but he must also be excited about being on the series.
So, this means that the writers will be working on an episode that includes (in small measure) a gifted opera star?

Or a gifted conductor. This is the best thing I've ever read. Placido is the MAN. If you would like to see someone who has aged gracefully, you should go watch this video , taken during Pope Benedict's American visit.

PLAH-thee- doh! He does look terrific, doesn't he? I hope that the L&O writers don't go too obvious a route with his mini-role. He's a divo everyday of the week. I'd like to see him in knitted caps and fingerless gloves, trying to bum a smoke from Jeremy Sisto

That is a fantastic idea, DB. I hope the writers think outside the box in that regard as well. And wouldn't the gifted Mr. Domingo get a kick out of a role like that?
Your mention of Jeremy Sisto makes me long for the show to begin. I'm very curious about what is going on with him. They left us last season with a struggling new partnership between Sisto & Andersons' characters. Also, there was what looked to be a one sided love affair going on between Lupo and his widowed sister in law. I hope the writers ditch that idea.

I've been wondering if we will be seeing Placido Domingo as a guest star in a Season 19 episode? I've been anxiously waiting every week. If you're out there, Mr. Balcer......could you give us a heads up? Please?

Yes, PLEASE. SOON. I can't wait!!!
There are integral clips of the Met gala celebrating their 125th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of Domingo's Met debut up on YouTube. The Domingo portions are pretty drool-worthy in my book, and in fact, if anyone wants, I will go to the "other tv shows we like" section and post a forty-page review XD
(Rereading this thread reminds me: dragonsback? Are you out there someplace? I do hope that you will post soon.)

Wow, a first for me in reading this thread. Thanks D-Roe and I'll check out YouTube with drool at the ready.
It would be great to see a non-operatic Placido on Law & Order.
I, too, hope that all is well with Dragonsback and she comes back posthaste !

My dear D-Roe, my dear jeffan - Just cruised by to see what was new(s) as April 19th rises up on the road to meet us. I had entirely forgotten about the cameo of Placido El Grande! I still am hoping that he plays a bum or a priest or a New York cabbie .
Or... . Hey, how about a street busker? The Greatest Operatic Tenor in History (so dubbed by the critics) singing a capella at the entrance to the Lexington Subway, while commuters indifferently toss a few quarters into the tambourine at his feet. Whaddaya think? :-)

That is a great idea, DB. I also hope, as you say, that he is not type cast in the expected way. So good to hear from you.

These would all be great cameo for Domingo, who is a wonderful actor (eg., I can only watch him filmed in Othello about once a year because it's so harrowing). Did you know there's still quite a bit of controversy about the "greatest tenor" label (limitations of range is one issue. There are others, although really I think a lot of it is jealousy about the career he's had. In some ways, the way people talk about him reminds me of how people talk about VDO ... some ways.)
Don't mind me for stretching this out as long as possible. Domingo is my girlhood hero!

You're in for a treat, then, ragin. Skip the kitschy "Three Tenors" pop stuff, and go listen online to some of the Verdi arias Placido has recorded. Amazin'.
And speaking of uncultured: I am reminded by D-Roe's post that only the great unwashed like myself call the man Placido. He is correctly referred to as Domingo. I just love saying Placido in my head: PLAH-thee-doh. Plahtheedohplahtheedohplahtheedoh. Makes me feel like I'm swigging Bellinis at Lincoln Center.
