Mr. Updike passed away on Tuesday at the age of 76. He was a rare thing, a great writer who was also by all acounts a good man. There are some splendid tributes to and interviews with him at NPR.org and at the NEW YORK TIMES websites.

I really want, really NEED to say something here about the giants of late 19th and 20th century American literature (the giants of world literature, in fact, America's great cultural gift to the world). No time now. Will try to come back later. Thanks for the NYT pointer, Patcat.

Shame on me, but I had no idea who he was... When I finally finish my studies I hope I'll get back to reading one or two books once in a while... Updike sounds like he should be included on my list of "I want to read it..."
