Here’s the poster for a second remake of the 70’s crime classic “The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three”. The original starred the excellent British actor Robert Shaw as “Mr. Blue” (Tarentino credited the movie for influencing his character’s names in “Reservoir Dogs”) and Walter Matthau as Transit Police Lieutenant, Garber. The movie was remade for TV in 1998 with Vincent D’Onofrio as “Mr. Blue”. In this latest version John Travlota reprises the role of “Mr. Blue” and Denzel Washington plays the Transit Police Lieutenant Garber. It will be a tall order for the new film to measure up to the original. Regardless, it has the cast and the story for a must see. One might think the design firm would have considered a throwback design similar to the what was done for the “The Bank Job” as a homage to the original.. No luck..we get the standard two headed contemporary design... moviegoods.typepad.com/visitors_center/2009/02/the-taking-of-pelham-123-movie-poster.html

I actually own a copy of the version with VDO, compliments of a cyber pal. It's actually very good, and also stars a young, cocky Donnie Walberg. Vincent's performance as the cool yet deadly Mr. Blue is deliberately understated.

I saw the remake of this with Denzel Washington and John Travolta, who plays VDO's character. It was good, not great. So obvious it was revamped as a vehicle for Travola & Washington to show their acting chops & do some serious scenery chewing. The plotline was changed for that reason. Different ending than both prior versions. I'll always prefer the original with Robert Shaw & Walter Matthau, in spite of my love for VDO. The made for TV version with Vincent & Olmos is better than this new one, objectively speaking. Travolta is too crazy to be convincing. He rants & raves & is very brutal. Travolta plays a great psycho, but it was all too, too much.

The VDO version is very nice I've only seen it recently, and I don't know the original version, but I think VDO plays a great "bad guy" - and, as DonnaJo pointed out, so wonderfully understated. He's cold, but never a caricature of cold.

Thank you for the review Donnajo. Even though I'm not surprised by your comments, I'm still looking forward to watching this version of the film myself.
The original is a classic. Both Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau were outstanding in their roles.

I have never seen the original, but I cant stand Robert Shaw as he comes off as an arrogant person, like his Jaws character. Vincent has more charm than he does, and play`s "Blue" with a polite, yet cool and dangerous persona. Not to mention that he is extremely gorgeous in it too LOL. Im looking forward to seeing the new version, as i like DW and JT as actors

I couldn't make myself see this newest version. The trailer looked so flashy and overly dramatic. Total Hollywood. Besides, I'm not super-crazy about the actors in it. Denzel's good in some things but he always plays the same character. Travolta, I don't really like him. I dunno, I'll stick with watching VDO's version, it looks more interesting, its not 'hollywood' and Vincent's yummy so that's a bonus.
