He is, isn't he? I mean inspite of all those psychotic issues that the doctor attached to him, and inspite of his discomfort when he was asked about his life, he seemed pretty happy with his life and with himself, didn't he?

After two episodes I'm not sure we can make any judgments about Nichols and Mr. Goldblum, but I see him as being the sort of character Mr. Goldblum has played in the past. But he was hired for a reason, and I'm glad the writers and producers are using his slightly off-kilter sense of humor. Patcat I like that. That's what I was trying to express. You expressed it better. But I do hope that this isn't the start of a new trend for the N/W episodes. We don't want Goldblum to be tailored as a new "Monk." That's a LOCI that's too light for my tastes. You've been reading my mind? LOCI: Lite.

An extract from a NYT article posted by Z-girl on the 17 April. ----- The Case of the Quirky Detective Audiences have probably asked themselves that same question about Mr. Goldblum, whose best-known film performances — a coterie of cracked geniuses in “The Fly,” “Jurassic Park” and “Independence Day” — can make one wonder how much of those characters’ twitchy, cerebral detachment he truly possesses. (The answer: a lot.) It was this essential quality that Dick Wolf, the creator and executive producer of the “Law & Order” franchise, wanted from the actor when he cast him to replace Chris Noth, the “Law & Order” veteran who left the series last year. As Mr. Wolf recalled in a telephone interview, when he met with Mr. Goldblum to offer him the part, he said, “I’m hiring you to be you, because it has to be like the oldest, most comfortable leather jacket in your closet. If you walk onto a set and think, ‘What would my character do?,’ we’re not writing the right character.” The consistent quirkiness Mr. Goldblum exhibits in his performances, Mr. Wolf said, made him an ideal complement to Vincent D’Onofrio, the “Criminal Intent” star who will continue to play the idiosyncratic Detective Robert Goren in alternating weeks of the show. “If Goren is Wikipedia, Nichols is the DSM-IV,” Mr. Wolf said. “If Vincent is omniscient in terms of facts, Jeff is omniscient psychologically.” Mr. Wolf added that, as the most character-driven series of the “Law & Order” franchise, “Criminal Intent” requires character actors. “I think Jeff would certainly identify himself as a character actor rather than a leading man,” he said. But Mr. Goldblum resisted any such attempts to categorize himself. “The less labeling I can do of myself, I find, I have a better, more effective time,” he said. None of this has discouraged Mr. Goldblum from questioning every aspect of his performance on the show, from how he should enter a room to how he should speak a banal line like “I’m afraid we have more bad news for you, Mrs. Dunbar.” (Not for nothing does he refer to his “Law & Order” role as “my current experiment.”) Julianne Nicholson, who plays Mr. Goldblum’s partner, Detective Megan Wheeler, said, “I always see him talking to the writers, talking to the director, talking to our on-set detective, talking to the other actors in the scene.” ----- At the recent NBCU press junket, Vincent described Jeff as a "hard hitter" and was enthused about a cross-over (hopefully there will be a Season 9)! As to Loci:Lite - I'm reticent to make any overall judgement based on two episodes as I would the G/E episodes - but so far so good! I'm also in complete accord with Tjara's response. I give it an "A" for being fabulously entertaining. I have to stop short of "A+" for the weakness of the motive reveal. There should have been a little more "ooomph" in it.

I've given this episode an A+ because I was entertained and Ross/Nichols/Wheeler were a threesome that made me laugh out loud. That did make me laugh, but I am still not sure how to react to Nichols. I don't know if I like him or not. :/ Hopefully I can get a better grip on his character before the season is up... it's really hard to write post eps for him because I am unsure of the character.

An A for my first Nichols episode. Quite entertaining. Nichols certainly has a nice, little smile, eh ZNG and Jeffan?! ;D

I still love the "Your pregnant"-line... in the middle of the street. And how he then holds up his hand to the honking cab driver as she's fumbling for words and he's digesting the info. That scene is awfully cute, and I think it was freezing cold that day.

Zach doesn't have psychotic issues just neurotic issues. Just like the rest of us. (I myself have had issues with authorities. Just not in this decade.) Psychotic refers to a total break with reality. Zach's not that. But I think he lives very much in his own mind. Must be a contented place.

My bad, I should've written "psychological" issues... But anway, I still got the "stable vibe" from him...
