I was given a lovely Mother's Day gift - to see the new Star Trek film with my kids. I am a big fan of the original series with William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy. and have seen each episode many times & the movies that stemmed from the series. I know I'm not alone here in being a fan. This movie was excellent. The new cast did a great job in channeling the original actors without actually copycatting them. I think it helps the enjoyment if you don't know the original show all that well. There are a few incidents that happen that a true Trekkie would be unhappy about. My daughter who is up at college and has a very limited knowledge of the series now has a little crush on the new Spock, lol. There were a few shout outs to us old fans that made me chuckle. Certain use of phrases.....a scene with Kirk seducing someone ....and of course the fate of the crew member in the red uniform who transports down & no one knows from the show.......

I shall go and see this, as I used to be a fan of TOS. Thus far, I've only read good things about it.

What a great gift for Mother's Day Donnajo. So pleased you enjoyed the film as I'm going to see it this weekend with a group of friends.

We saw this over the weekend too, and thought it was great! I wouldn't classify myself as Trekkie by any means, but I do LOVE the original show and have deep affection for it (all the spin-off shows over the years can kindly suck it, they're just not my cup of tea). This had just the right blend of creative new ideas AND fun throwback moments and nostalgia. Both Mr. Ivy and I really liked the story they came up with and thought it was quite clever (though I shalln't discuss it one teensy bit here so as to not spoil). And amazingly no one sucked at portraying young versions of beloved characters, not even the dude playing Kirk, who I had the most qualms about. Very good casting. Oh and it was really Spocktastic. I love me some Spock. I totally had a crush on Spock as a little girl....I maybe still do Lastly, the theater was packed and everyone clapped at the end, which made it extra fun ;D

Finally saw this tonight with my friend Zach, who was on his third time. Enjoyed it tremendously. The actors were splendid, especially Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Mr. Quinto has learned the art of being still very well. It was clever and intelligent and respectful without being slavishly devoted. Very cool.

Hubby and I saw it last weekend. Really good. We both were big fans of the original series. Love both Shatner and Nimoy.
Like that they brought back the original Spock but wished they had included Kirk. It could have been woven in and I think I would have liked it better. Now, that doesn't mean that I didn't like the movie. Loved it. Just like the Spock and Kirk team that's all.
Pine and Quinto were great. There will be more movies. It was creative, fun and had a lot of the spirit of the old show. Funny lines that any trekie would know.
We would see it again. My husband and some buddies might do that again tomorrow after the picnic. I think the girls and I might see a chick flick. They aren't into that stuff. Tried to talk them into it, because it is a love story... didn't work.

I finally got to see this and it is everything and more as posted by the previous commentators. Will definitely be buying the DVD.
Yep, it would have been nice to see Captain James T Kirk but only because I have a soft spot for him. His absence did not diminish this new film.
The atmosphere in the threatre was great with all in good fun audience participation.

I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know at what time (year) the older Spock is thought to appear, but it would be hard bringing back James Kirk who "vanished" during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise B (Star Trek Generations).

There are stories about that William Shatner insisted he be given a death scene since Leonard Nimoy got one in WRATH OF KHAN.

Hmm - Shatner had a death scene in GENERATIONS. I mean, canon story is that James Kirk vanished as of 2294ish, only to reappear during the time of Picard & Co., (2370ish), but he dies and Picard burries him. I don't think there would've been an easy way to bring back an older Kirk without messing with the timeline. And Trekkies usually are very, very picky about the timeline...

Tjara--that was the death scene (GENERATIONS) I refered to. I should have been clearer. I'm sure a lot of people know Shatner can be an egotistic jerk. Even Shatner admits he can be an egotistic jerk. And I suspect that has something to do with him not being in the film.
In Shatner's defense, I do need to write that some friends of mine saw him at a STAR TREK convention once, and said he was funny, and nice to the fans, especially kids.
So, when do we get L&O conventions?

Did anyone notice the tribbles? I thought that was a great touch. My daughter has been watching Star Trek OS episodes on CBS.com since we've seen the film. They are in beautiful condition, better than what YouTube has to offer.

There were tribbles in a little tank next to Scotty when we first meet him at that space station on that icy planet. If you listen you can hear them cooing! ;D
A good excuse to go see it again, Patcat. I've seen it twice myself (my daughter loves it!) ;D

Ah-ha! So that's why some of the audience was giggling at that scene. I thought it was just the very funny performance by the actor playing Scotty.
